I've watched at least 10 pianists play this so far, and this is the first one I've heard not make a single mistake (I'm pretty sure I didn't hear one) - not that the other performances weren't good, but this is apparently a pretty tricky piece. I LOVED this performance! And I LOVE this piece. Beethoven was such a phenomenal genius , the way he could take a simple musical theme, and weave a sophisticated, ornate and beautifully melodic tapestry around it, and in such an incredibly expressive way.

"Apparently pretty tricky" is a wild understatement. ;) Also, "not a single mistake"? He clearly plays the infamous octave passage with both hands, thus omitting a few notes the respective other hand was supposed to play/hold at that time.

@@magicmulder I wouldn't call that a mistake, it sounds smoother that way; more legato, and Giltburg no doubt made a decision to play it that way- on purpose; not by "mistake'. I don't miss those few accompanying left hand notes, because the main melody line sounds better this way to me.

As someone who has learned the first movement and 2nd movement and is currently learning the 3rd movement, there are plenty of mistakes here. It is physically impossible not to make a mistake, especially on such a wildly difficult. This isn't a sonata of ordinary difficulty. It's one of the harder ones in the piano repertoire, and certainly one of the most difficult from Beethoven(in my opinion 3rd, only to 29 and 32). There are plenty of mistakes he makes, and that's fine because no judge cares about that. In terms of mistakes, he doesn't have any glaring issues. The main thing they focus on beyond that is the interpretation. In a lower-level competition, maybe mistakes matter more, here they matter less(obviously assuming the high technical standards of the contestant). example of mistake: 3:11-3:14 botches note in left hand
You can see the very beginning, he is among those who cheat and use both hands (thus omitting some notes) instead of the intended right-hand 1-5.

Except for the humming motor in the background, this was an excellent recording, and a beautiful performance! The only thing is the opening movement sounds like it's being played for an Olympic athletic event- I mean, It's great that Giltburg has such fast fingers, but, well, maybe this is just his interpretation, but personally I think it sounds better just a little slower. He does a wonderful job with the 2nd & third movements, though- plenty of mood & sensitivity, and so clean & flawless.

Marcos Leite,pianista/professor.

21:18 Unfortunately he's one of those who use both hands for the octaves which is a cop-out (see Horowitz for how to play them fast with one hand).

Why is he playing two different tempos in the first movement? Beethoven does NOT indicate this. He is playing the opening tempo WAY too fast. Just awful.
