You should listen to the whole symphony. It’s one of if not the greatest musical achievement of all time. Absolute masterpiece

As I’m sure it’s been pointed out…Beethoven had spent the previous 10 or so years pretty much in reclusion…and was totally deaf when this was written and performed. The musicians were instructed to not follow his conducting, following someone who I believe was stationed in the audience

That his genius could not be bridled by the most severe loss to a musical composer imaginable.. Truly incredible shit right there!!!!

One of the best named movements in the world. A long time favorite.

Good to see you reacting to this one! This a piece where a lot of story is told through the structure. The intro section is a back-and-forth between the main themes from the previous three movements and this imperious, judgy cello line that keeps cutting them off. Then the famous "Ode to Joy" theme comes in, and the cello starts cautiously harmonizing with it before giving it the floor. The rest of the movement is essentially a "mini symphony" with four distinct sections, representing the four movements in standard symphonic form, all using "Ode to Joy" as the theme. In light of this structure, I get the sense that the fourth movement is a "take two" of the entire symphony, intended to thematically overwrite and improve on what came before. Personally, I interpret the symphony as a rejection of fear (movement 1), fury (movement 2), and resignation (movement 3) in favor of joy as he reflects back on his life and struggles.

Beethoven is the goat and deserves more recognition of just how great his music actually is.

Im absolutely obsessed with the pieces he wrote for a piano.. Iv probably listened to all of them at some point. Ironic how little of his full orchestra music iv experienced. This was beautiful. Especially around 17mins!

The piano sonatas are amazing Funny that most have only heard no14 when he did many more at least as good. The string quartets aren't that far behind. Both of those are arguably ahead of his symphonies.

@@joebloggs396 Even before the hearing impairment it's an incredible body of work! Other than simply loving the way it sounds, It's something about when a composer writes a solo sonata, that makes me imagine them playing it! It's a romantic connection. I feel their emotions (or mine) more than a full orchestral piece.. hairs standing up.. All that good shit 😎

PS - Beethoven was so deaf by the time he completed this, and conducted the Premiere performance, he lost his place in the score toward the end, so that the orchestra finished a couple of bars before Beethoven did- at which the concertmaster came forward and turned Beethoven around, to an audience, on their feet, losing their shit -realizing that this glorious music was written by a man who could not even hear it live- only in his mind.

I was about to write the same thing! The fact that he could write a piece called Ode To Joy when he had lost his ability to hear is enough to make me ugly cry every time.
