Second that. It would be nice if they did a third movie with BJ turning into a friend to Lydia like he was in the cartoon series. And not a romantic interest, that would be vulgar.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I loved it but there was a lot I liked and that's how I feel about the overall experience. Some of it was very predictable but I also wasn't expecting anything even vaguely deep. If nothing else, a third is warranted just to get that title.

I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. The resolution was quick (the crux of the story, Astrid's love interest, was resolved lickedy split, as was BJ's ex (who had a powerful setup)). And the ending (I got the Carrie reference but still) was weird.

My biggest worry about this movie was that Beetlejuice would be the main star, when part of the magic of the first movie is he has just enough screentime before he would have just been super annoying, so it was great to see the movie doesn’t do that and his screentime percentage is just slightly higher. Second biggest was that Jenna Ortega would just be playing a copy of Lydia and/or Wednesday, and they didn’t do that either. And I’ve heard some people complaining that Wolf is pointless to the story and should have been removed, to which my response is “But then Willem Defoe wouldn’t be in the movie, and are you really saying you’d rather not have him doing a really fun self-parody performance if it’s an option?” Finally, the MacArthur Park scene is now my favorite single scene that Burton has done, taking one of the worst songs ever written and making good art out of it, much like he did across all of Ed Wood.

It was… ok. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either. Personally, I would get rid of the abusive boyfriend. The second he threw Lydia’s medication in the trash, I hated him. That’s abuse, and he’s horrible. Dolores seriously needed her role expanded. You don’t get someone like Monica Belluci in a role, only to have that role end up completely wasted. Delia Deetz is and has always been an absolute queen, and I adore her. I love seeing her and Lydia actually getting along, that was great. The Jeremy subplot was pretty good. Willem Dafoe was great, and I don’t care how needless that character may have been, it’s Willem Dafoe.

I like how they did it with "Addams Family Values" (the sequel to the 90's film). Their life was just as gothically blissful but the birth of a new Addams baby throws off their routine. It's cool when the characters in a story start out in a good spot but they have to deal with a big change, because even a positive change can be disruptive.

Valid points as ever. This is what I sent to my friend after we’d both watched it: Changes that I think would have made it better -Giving us more of a look at Beetlejuice’s bio-exorcism business as established with the shrunken heads, beyond just hearing snippets of phone calls; still only has to be as part of the opening set-up rather than delved into deeper yet nevertheless would have been interesting to have depicted. -Fewer needle drops. -I feel it should have been explicitly restated why Beetlejuice wants to marry Lydia, with it as a means to an end rather than her actually being the love of his life, to whit as I also suggested earlier they could have established that in the interim he’s discovered another means why which he could reach that end instead (albeit still requiring Lydia, whether specifically or because of the symbolism of it being her in his eyes) per the bad taste of how the wedding went down last time. -On the theme of weddings, while he did obviously show shock at Deloris’ return and a want to avoid her, I think it would have been more interesting impactful if the threat of her, even if he made a show of maintaining his typical demeanour, actually had him showing explicit worry and loss of composure behind the outer shell. -Deloris needed a bigger role in the climax, same as how the climax in general needed to be more. Have her draining the souls of everyone in the church (obviously unsuccessfully in full) in her expectation to bring her thus-empowered wrath down on Beetlejuice who in turn is endeavouring to fight her off with his wackiness; you can still have Astrid save the day with the sand worm, albeit after that Beetlejuice himself could thereby be in a weakened state by the attack, trying to quickly trick the Deetz’s in the aftermath only for Lydia to banish him (as opposed to him just standing there and letting her do it). -For the other villain of the film, Jeremy, I’d just change (besides per what you pointed out perhaps making it more of a thing that Astrid’s question about what book he was reading was a matter of her specifically deflecting from herself) that once Richard had got Astrid and Lydia away from the train there thus was more of a continuing chase from those pursuing them, amping up the tension more, with them then encountering Jeremy before he’s got to the stamping booth, again it being a tighter state of jeopardy in trying to stop him reaching said booth, seeing them ‘fail’, only to then have the switch of the reveal of it being Beetlejuice under the hat per his arrangement with Delia. -Otherwise for the afterlife, I get that for plot/pacing it made more sense here for the recently deceased to show up straight in the waiting room rather than back in their homes to identify their way there with the handbook, I still would have wanted the alteration addressed; when it was what Lydia said the Maitlands found a loophole for moving on, that instead could have been an opportunity to establish an alteration in the afterlife process in general (albeit would still need to be such at the same time that Jeremy remained stuck in his house). -Just would have liked a bit more dark humour like in the original. But other than that I enjoyed it lol As for if/when they do a third film, since potentially it’d be the final one if you’re looking at it as a trilogy, it’d want to be grand in its payoff to the series, therefore I’d want to see Beetlejuice actually achieve his goal of returning to the living world as the main thrust of the film, not just a jeopardy in the climax. To get there, on the one hand you could simply go down the route of he tricks a different family like he attempted with the Maitlands/Deetz’s and so gets out separate to the main family who hence then step up into the action upon realising, however more creatively I’d pitch that Beetlejuice finds the author of the handbook, the entity which in fact determines the rules of the afterlife, this being in turn dwelling in the wastelands of the sand worms to a) explore them more and b) explain (without over-de-mystifying things) why that plain is connected to the afterlife, whom he hence forces to change things so he can get out on his own. Once free, obviously he’s just an agent of chaos rather than having any villainous master plan, so it hence becomes a display of the weird pandemonium he causes on a whim albeit now on a global scale with the wider public as the victims. It ends with him being destroyed as an entity entirely, not just banished to the afterlife again

As someone who loves the original Beetlejuice but has been kind of disappointed with most of Burton’s recent output, I thought this was really fun. I’m not sure it massively holds together on a script or structural level, but I had a great time. It’s mad, it’s creative, it importantly doesn’t outstay welcome (only 100 minutes, could easily have been like, two hours). Willem Dafoe and Michael Keaton are so much fun in it so I had a great time.

Same. Definitely worth seeing if you're a fan of the og. My two biggest gripes: -The resolution of Astrid's love interest (the crux of the story IMHO) was resolved in a split-second. Your points are great. Pretty much matches my take on the movie as well. There are so many things they did that felt like half-thought ideas that they didn't bother to flesh out. And Lydia was supposed to be smart. What might've made better sense with Rory is actually if he was trying to marry Delia. I could totally see her winding up in that situation. It would mean that the dad would've had to have been dead longer, and take away a lot of the gags they used there, but it could've worked if they really wanted. It just did not work with Lydia, IMO. And the ex wife was really cool to look at but she was literally no threat whatsoever. She was completely irrelevant. The boy that the daughter liked was interesting. I think they could've gone further with that and it might've been interesting. And I loved Willem Dafoe, even though he was completely unnecessary. I can think of five or six different ways they could've made this movie more coherent and keep the spirit of the original. It's so weird because I actually enjoyed watching it, even though in hindsight it was objectively bad, when I think about it afterward.

I expected worse. I actually loved it. I guess Bellucci is there because she's Burton's gf and he HAS to put them in most of his movies. He just can't help himself. I also very much liked Mario Bava homage in Delores flashback. Very "La maschera del demonio". I loved practical effects. What I didn't love is the song in the end. It was too long and sappy and overstayed its welcome. I'm going to watch it a few more times with friends😄

even if its a still from a previous film they still have to pay residuals to you. it technically falls under the same contractual element as when they reuse footage for a "previously on."- source is i'm an actor and sometimes those still shots or previously on's are the best paychecks. But i did read somewhere that they used a stand in with make up or something to that affect where they wouldn't have to pay him.

I liked this movie but yah there is a lot wrong with it. Like did they have to give Beetlejuice a back story? He was so much interesting and mysterious not knowing anything about him. Is he a trickster demon or guy who sold his soul? Nope just guy who lived and died during the black plague. (Which was a joke in first one not to be taken seriously!) Also why did Mr deates funeral have to have young kids singing during it? Really why?

While I do agree this film is a mess, it is a fun mess. The baby Beetlejuice was terrifying. It looks like Chucky. One last thing, it is kind of funny that this made more money on its 6th weekend than Joker 2 on its 2nd. Because WB was going to put it on Max. They released it in theaters if Tim Burton lowered the budget by about 50 million.

This movie suffers from what so many movies suffer from nowadays, trying to do too much. There was enough plot here for a miniseries, seriously. There's not enough time to play with all of these ideas and so most of them are worthless. Why does one introduce a new and more dangerous villain? To give the hero and the previous villain a reason to work together. And it's also a really great way of raising the stakes. Farscape did it at least twice. But was that the plot of the movie? No. A person who can talk to ghosts has to deal with people in her own life dying might be an interesting concept for a story but given how the last movie ended... I'm sure it's something the main character could adapt to. I mean the people who were really her parents were already dead. Her husband dying shouldn't have been that bad. A plot about her moving on and living life in the real world instead of in the world of the Dead... Okay I could see that. That's not this movie either. A rebellious child does everything you don't want them to do.... And summons Beetlejuice. Now you got to save the kid and defeat Beetlejuice again. That seems very straightforward and fun. That's not really this movie either. Instead we get incomplete fractions of all of these plots. It's a mess. But in the moment, while you are watching it, you don't think about these things. It's only afterwards when so many things are set up and so little is paid off that you're disappointed. And that's because all the actors really embraced their characters and committed to the bit. All the look and feel was spot on. You know there's going to be a third one.... Let's hope the script is tighter.

I can’t believe (except I can) that the shrunken head joke from the last 30 seconds of the original was embraced SO HARD in this movie at all. The sexism and racist tropes peppered in the original are pretty standard late 80s fare - but they didn’t steer away from them in 2024 they DOUBLED DOWN. The entire “main” cast is still lily white but we have the shrunken head bullshit as an actual through line - we have Asian Drycleaner murder. Recurring “Soul Train” joke with the only black cast. Like it’s pretty innocuous but so was the 1980s version - why are we going there at all? But beyond that my main pet peeve was WHAT 15 year old boundary pushing goth girl experiments with her hair and then COMMITS TO THAT HAIRCUT for life? Least believable plot point of all.

Haven't seen the film yet, but will. Had this film come out 15 years ago, I suspect it would have ripped my heart out. By all indications, it's an overstuffed mess full of recycled jokes. Though I'm aware the general reception is mostly favorable, kinda. Fortunately (?) I've been disappointed and/or crushed by lega-sequels and reboots and whatever. I don't need anything to live up to the originals I grew up with. Because they never will. They don't even want to. They deliberately want to hurt me. Maybe. Or just cash in on shallow references for the money. If Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, The Hobbit films, etc didn't kill me, a teeny tiny insignificant long-delayed but non-Hawaiianed Beetlejuice movie can't touch me. It sounds mediocre at best, but I'll check it out. I have the original on Blu-Ray, and before that I had it on DVD, and before that I had it on VHS. Hollywood can't take it away from me. And I'll give them $4 tops to even try. And that's for my own morbid curiosity.

Yeah, this was a lot of stuff thrown at the wall. I'm going to hold this up as an example of what a great director can do with so little actual material. I'm in the same boat - enjoyed the good parts enough that I'm happy with having seen it, but I'd rather watch the first one again. * Making Ortega's character a skeptic felt so obvious. Then having her able to see ghosts was even more predictable. * I suspect that the pseudo-claymation version of Jeffery Jones is enough that they would have to pay him. They definitely didn't need to show him as much as they did. I'd rather cut some of that and have send off for Baldwin and Davis. It could have been animated so they still looked young. * With this many plotlines, they all had to be simple and easily tied up. * Dafoe always throws himself into his work and was fun to watch, but should have either been bigger or cut. * It's better than a lot of Burton's recent work. Though I do recommend Poor Things to people who love Tim Burton. Amazing movie with that out-of-whack vibe.
