I remember being shocked at one of my kids first parent/teacher conferences, where she described a child I had no familiarity with. All these glowing reports, how he is so helpful with other kids and how polite, etc. I just sat there with my mouth hanging open for ten minutes as she described this complete stranger to me. @@holdernessfamilylaughs I live in Canada. I invited over a new friend mom and her preschooler son who had recently moved from the southern US. I have 3 teenage boys and we have a large assortment of toy guns and nerf bullets laying about in various stages of decay. Many moms here are uncomfortable with their younger children being exposed to that kind of violence (especially moms with firstborns who haven’t learned yet it’s in their nature already!) So just as my American friend arrived, I warned her that we had a lot of guns out, and was that ok? “Are they loaded?” she asked. “Oh probably some of them,” I answered. “Um…” she said, looking uncomfortable. “I’ll just quickly clean them up,” I assured her, adding “you didn’t see that!” as I spotted a nerf pistol nearby on the floor and snatched it away. It was then that our different cultural contexts became clear.🤣 It turns out, she didn’t mind the toy guns after all!

My kids are grandparents now. My worries were never about how *they* might behave ~ because they were well behaved at home. (Different era!) My concerns were always about who, in the other kid's house, might be a predator. Our own neighborhood pedophile lived next door to us and was the director of the children choir at his church. Highly respected guy, of course. On a lighter note ~ one of my daughters was staying over with a friend when friend's Mom asked my kid, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" My seven year old replied, "I'm gonna be a 'call girl'." She and I had a conversation earlier in the day where I found myself explaining the job of a 'call girl'. Because she was seven and (again) it was a different era, I said, "A man takes you out to dinner and maybe dancing and then he'd want some hugs and that sort of thing." My kid decided, "That's the job for ME!"

Lol, I was the world’s pickiest eater as a kid (well, my whole life, but I eat sauce on spaghetti now!) My mother would tell me, “do NOT wrinkle up your nose when Mrs X gives you something you don’t like for dinner!!!!!!!! You eat it and say thank you.” Me: “but, but, but, what if it’s fish?!?!” Mom: “I don’t care what it is, you eat it and you act like you like it!!!!!!!!” Sigh. Thankfully, I didn’t get served too many things that I wouldn’t touch, and would just say “no, thank you” if offered a serving of something I didn’t like. If I got stuck having to eat something I normally wouldn’t touch because it had been put on my plate…most of the time, I was surprised that I actually liked it! When I got home, I’d be all excited and say, “Mom! I didn’t know zucchini was so good!! Susie’s mom cooked it for dinner, and I ate it cause you told me I had to, and now I really like it!” After doing THAT a couple of times, I could see the steam coming out of my mom’s ears cause no way would I have ever eaten any of that stuff at home, and heard… “Oh! So, I have served that 20 times, and now you say you like it cause you had it as Susie’s house,” with a look that said “I will strangle you and a jury of my peers won’t convict me.” 🤦♀️ You couldn’t win, lol.
