Great video with lots of things to think about. Just going to add one more thought. I sew garment, and have so many items of clothing that I have taken the time to chose the fabric, style, and pattern, --- make a muslin, alterations to the pattern, then sew. Half my closet are these emotional items that are my creation. I belong to a garment sewing group, and we all have the same challenge of cleansing our closet of garment items that should go. The sad thing is, if we thrift them, most of the time, even though well sewn, because there is no label, or size, they are tossed. Recently I have found a resident facility that I have taken both my husband's and my discards to, and they were happy to take them for the people living there. Once again, very thoughtful ideas.

Hi Melody, thank you so much for sharing! wow, how great that you sew your own clothes. i wish i could, but i already fail at mending the inside pockets of my coat - my husband has to do that. i totally understand that these pieces are especially hard for you to sort out. and you're right. many stores don't take these pieces because they don't fit the norm, but some are so much higher quality than standard goods. donating them to institutions is a wonderful thought - for the people there as well as for you! thanks for sharing that!

So glad I found this video! I am just starting to purge my closet and pare down what I have. The problem I have is that I act in community theatre, where a lot of times, we provide our own costumes, so I tell myself "You might need this for a play, just keep it"
@lauralarson.organizing
7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. This is a very interesting challenge that is definitely not for everyone. So I would suggest a solution that doesn't apply to everyone. What if you separate the clothes that you only keep for the theater from your clothes. So you go through all your clothes and only keep in your closet what really makes you happy. For the things that don't make you happy, think again about what you want to keep for the theater. Sort out what you don't want to keep. Put the things you want to keep in boxes or stow them somewhere else. Boxes in the cellar or something similar are a good idea, as you probably won't need to access these clothes regularly. Make sure you photograph the clothes in some way to help you remember them so you don't just put them in boxes and then forget what you actually have! Does this help you?

It does, actually. I even have a 'prop shop' in my house, it's a small bedroom upstairs where I keep theatre props, etc. I will definitely use this idea! Thank you so much!@@lauralarson.organizing

That was very helpful! Thanks😊 I’ve sorted through my closet once and was pleased with the results. I’m now wearing clothes I was “saving for good” instead of my old faithfuls. My problem was keeping items that were still in good condition - they’d served me well, but I was tired of them. I either donated them or took them to a consignment store and I felt very “unburdened”!

@lauralarson.organizing

Oh, I understand this fear very well! Thank you for sharing it! You have recognized it very well. We often keep things because we are afraid of the future: what if I need this? It's important to me that you know that the decision of what weight or figure you want lies within you and not in your closet. How do you feel now when you see these clothes? Do they make you happy? Or do they make you sad? Do you feel comfortable in your body? Or are you trying to chase after social ideals that perhaps don't suit you at all? Are you happy with your body? What are you actually trying to achieve when you think about losing 10 pounds? I think these are very important questions that you can ask yourself to get closer to the answer. Does that help you?

Sorry this is a late response, regarding your menopause weight, may I make a suggestion? I’ve struggled for a long time. When I read labels, I was shocked. So much Genetically Modified Ingredients in every day American diets. That along with processed food and high sugar content is why America is a country of morbid obesity. We weren’t designed to eat that way. I began by offing the GMOs, cut way back on bread, only purchasing from a high standard bakery. In other words, eat clean. You’ll be shocked at how much your body will thank you! I’m no nutritionist or a rep for anything. I just know what worked and I want to share it so you can achieve your goal. 🙏🪷❤️

Thank you for the video. What is your suggestion for clothes that are in great condition, but are too old to sell on sites such as thredup? post retirement I found that charities designed to help women entering the workforce like Dress for Success in the US will not accept high-quality clothing. It has to be wash and wear. I can’t bring myself to throw a perfectly nice garment in the trash and have already gifted quite a few items to former coworkers and friends.
@lauralarson.organizing

Of course, I’m happy to help! So I am not most familiar with all the selling platforms in the US market, but I bet there are more than one size where you can sell your clothes online. And if they all don’t accept the clothes you have you could still consider doing a garage sale or putting up a stand at a flea market - this actually can be really fun for a day! Otherwise there is still the option to donate the clothes. Because you are absolutely right - the is no reason to Theorie clothes away! Did that help you?

@tplaypiano , I can so relate! The majority of my wardrobe are quality fine wool suits because of the nature of the job I had. These days the office style has changed and one cannot find these type of suits anymore. I too have given away thousands of dollars of clothing, hand bags, and furniture. So I continue to purge those items that I have no real attachment to and perhaps one day find that opportunity where someone needs a good quality suit. With the economy the way it is, it’s true that many do not want to have to worry about dry cleaning something. I’m also very careful now about donating pieces of the classic pieces. Those pieces never go out of style and just because I didn’t have the opportunity to wear it , doesn’t mean I won’t ever again. I think the pandemic really proves this point. In fact these days I’m so tired of wearing the “leggings uniform” unless I’m exercising , so I make the effort to dress up a little where I can. Quality over Quantity is key in purging a wardrobe.

@@eileenchang2173 Thanks for sharing! You are so right. Once you figure out what your style really is, you realize you don't need that many pieces. Great questions: When are you going to wear it again, and are you excited about wearing it? Also, would you buy the item again? All get very much to the heart of the matter! I've found (once in a while) that I'm hanging on to some piece of clothing that I like but don't wear because I don't know what to wear with it. I've been able to rescue some nice clothing by learning how to style it.

Thank you for your comment! The discussion about this video is really lively and shows me that sorting out clothes is an issue for many people. If you absolutely love a piece of clothing and it makes you happy but you still sometimes don't know how you should or can combine it, style advice can help you. However, I've usually found that if I never wear an item of clothing at all because I don't know how and when, then it hasn't made me happy.

Here’s my problem with this. I buy a lot of vintage 60s-70s designer’s clothes. I have to space them out in order not to repeat too often. I may not wear something for a year or more. I have purchased things for certain weather which with global warming, who knows what the temp will be? Hmmm…. Am I making excuses right now for not getting rid of clothes?? maybe?
@lauralarson.organizing
7 ай бұрын
Hi Kathy! Thank you so much for sharing! The fact that you are asking yourself whether you are perhaps just looking for excuses shows how reflective you are! You can always recognize excuses when your head answers, but not your heart. The head gives many answers, panicky and loud. If it contains answers such as climate change or "Maybe I'll need this in the future", this can be a sign that your head is answering. The answer from your heart is usually quiet and unobtrusive. It simply says: "Yes, I love it!" or, "No, I don't want that (anymore)." The most important and only question you should ask yourself when you ask yourself whether you should keep this item of clothing is whether it makes you happy. The questions in the video should help you to recognize what you really love about your clothes and what you don't. Does this help you?

Thank you for sharing this. That's the beautiful thing about sorting through all your clothes after feeling happy: you'll realize which clothes you really love and recognize a pattern in them - that's your style. For all the other clothes you sort out, sit with the feeling of guilt, that you're sorting out perfectly good clothes. Look at the piece and describe, why you want to sort it out and what you don't like about it. It's not a nice feeling, but it's the only way to learn. This will help you avoid bad purchases next time. Does that help you?
