In this video, I walk through how to learn basic strumming when starting out on guitar. The acoustic guitar is such an important rhythmic instrument, so getting your timing and beats just right is crucial early on. I always recommend that people practice with a metronome, as it helps every musician become better. I use the ProMetronome App on my iPhone, it's free and works great. Below is my recommended practice routine for beginners learning how to strum:
Get solid on 1/4 notes and 1/8 notes at 120 bpm, using all four chords of a key and you have an incredible foundation. Start by transitioning back and forth from just two chords, doing 1/4 notes at 70 bpm. Then slowly bump up your bpm on the metronome until you hit 120 bpm. Now go back to 70 bpm and work on your 1/8 notes, working up your bpm the same way. You'll see your strumming get so much better when you start practicing this consistently!
