The Pathfinder is great, I used to own the guitar version, and now use the bass version(yea, it works beautifully for guitar too!) I’m more interested in the cleans, and the Pathfinder series is superb for that. Honestly, the gain channels on all of these small practice amps are pretty much the can ‘o bees type, but if you dial in a great tone on the clean channel, then use the pedal of your choice, things get MUCH better.

1. Marshall - Overall best sounding and versatile. Cleans were surprisingly good. Distortion is obviously going to be there b/c it's a Marshall 2. Orange - It was tough between this and VOX for me but Orange seemed better and more versatile to my ears. Brighter sounding. 3. Vox - I feel like you are either going to love it or hate it. It felt too muffled (if that's the right word) like someone put a blanket over the sound. - Though it had the best clean sounds to me. 4. Fender - I know their higher end amps are good but this practice amp is really really bad

The first three are really close. 1. Marshall 2. VOX 3. Orange 4. Fender Honestly 2 and 3 are really close but vox surprisingly sounds really good. Almost competes number 1 with the Marshall imo. The orange does sound awesome also and has plenty of adjustability tone wise. Overall Marshall wins by majority of votes ive seen purely due to it's versatility and warmth, broadcasting bass and treble with clarity. It sounds great in both dirty and clean tones yet, personally I would deeply consider the VOX its dirty tones although quite trebley sound awesome and really persuade me.

I stopped buying Fender products a long time ago. They are incredibly overpriced for house simple and minimalistic they are. I'm not saying Fender is terrible. I'm just saying it's not the cat's meow anymore. And it hasn't been since the 60s. When you have guitars that are worth $400-$800 that completely obliterate the sound and playability of a $2,000-3,000 guitar you know that that company is charging too much for the label. Ie: Epiphone Les Paul vs USA Fender Strat. Argue if you would like but the fact is the minimal difference in sound lies mostly in the pickups. And a set of hot rails or humbucker by DiMarzio, EMG or any of the other large manufacturers would turn any cheap guitar into a top-notch axe.

Marshall. As a complete noob who's just bought an SG at age 56 (cos he still thinks he's Angus), thank you for helping me make my decision on which amp to buy so so easy!!! It's non of these but it is definitely gonna be the Marshall MG15 GFX

I found the orange one to be the best sounding overall. The vox quite amazed me but lacks maybe of clarity and the marshall one is too dark sounding to my taste, except for dirty tones and clean tones at the end which sounded nice ! The fender was too boxy sounding. Thanks for this enjoyable and thorough review !

Marshall was the but I was honestly shocked at how good the clean tones sounded from the Vox. This video helped a lot, I was looking for something light and not as fragile as a tube amp to take to a friends house for jamming. The Fender felt like a joke

@Erich Dennis I have both a Vox Pathfinder 10 (for my ES335 copy) & a Marshall MG15R, which I use as a harmonica amp. The Marshall is a tough little amp with great overdrive & healthy reverb. It's survived many trips on the back of my Harley & always performed well. I highly recommend them as cheap harp amps. But... I just prefer the Vox for the guitar. It's clean sound is clearer & the overdrive is different - perhaps not better, just different & it's the sound I prefer. People with Strats & SGs might prefer the Marshall, since they'd sound different through it than my 335 but I know what I like. I like the Vox.

Orange was too bright and metallic sounding with clean tones.. The Marshall and Vox sounded neutral in a good way, and were the recordings I feel needed the least post processing. Tough but I thinjk the Marshall takes it. The VOX gets too indistinguishable at high gain. The Fender was nice clean, but terrible high gain. I don't think you want a highly colored amp at this price range. That goes for the orange too, its clean tone was cheap sounding to me. The Marshall sounded solid for both.

This . In the test segment with Line Out , the Fender Frontman was significantly Less Worse than thru the speaker . The speaker is definitely the limiting factor . Undoubtedly it would be much improved with with a speak upgrade . The stock speaker can do cleans with both tone knobs centered . But move up or down , and tone quickly gets thin and weak . I suspect a major portion of Frontman 10 W amps are sold as part of starter combo packs . Hard to imagine someone delibertly paying suggested retail price for one . If you aquired it for " free " , or someone gave it to you after they upgraded amps , or you paid $20 for it used , it could be worth it to swap speakers . If you're buying new at list price ; take the price of the amp , plus price of decent replacement speaker , and just get a less worse amp in the first place . On that theme - As a catagory . basic SS 15W practice amps are much better sounding than their 10W counterparts .
Much to my surprise, overdriven the Marshall is the clear winner for me (and the Fender really sounds obnoxious to my ears).

The Marshall seems like the best all-rounder and it does a decent job at emulating the sound of a more expensive Marshall in a cheap package. It's a bit characterless but I would have loved it when I was starting out. With that said, I like the Vox best - it has its own shouty character and seems like a lot of fun. The Fender and the Orange both sound dreadful to me!

For me in this comparison, the all amp expect orange, in the max gain, they all look like they're forcing to give dirty sounds. However orange takes that charge and show that it can give dirty sounds without any distortion, but cleaning sound. And on Orange, the EQ system is more functional, for example in Marshall there is only 1. There is a dirty sound and dirty sound. Dirty sounds doesn't need trash, garbage sound. And what in here, I hear trash sounds in Vox and Fender. So I would choose; 1- Orange 2- Marshall 3- Vox 4- Nahhh fuck that amp i totally cant damage my ears sorry

Thanks so much for this, no nonsense direct comparison. Personally it's a toss up between the vox and the orange. though that Marshall is really surprising by how good it sounds. The Fender surprises on how transparently crass of a cash grab it is by slapping a brand on some aliexpress level amp.
