Everyone should try out ballroom at least once because you don't know if you like it unless you have tried. If someone asked me 15 months ago if I would do ballroom I would say absolutely not. Now I am on the board of my collegiate ballroom dance team, practiced 5+ times a week and placed at competitions. (Currently taking a break because solo practice is not very much fun for me and my partner lives on the other coast.) Leaving for college was scary. I am very lucky to The people there are really nice and welcoming. I hope everyone can find a community like I have with my dance team. It is important to set goals and know why you want to dance. For me it is because I like it and it is fun. As long as you know that whatever you are doing is okay. I know many people feel pressure to be competitive, but for me I am happy to just have fun and watch myself improve. Do whatever makes you happy. I am lucky that I basically do not have to pay much We get funding from the school for our coach. We have a studio on campus that we can use for free. We have a ballroom closet where we can loan out outfits for competition. We have a Dance Mentors program where higher level dancers give free lessons to lower level dancers. The only cost in the whole program are shoes which we can get reimbursed for half from a scholarship fund. I am very lucky.

This is such a nicely worded comment!😇 It is so true that you have to try everything to know whether or not you like it. I'm so glad I tried ballroom because it has lead me to new personal discoveries and amazing experiences that I will remember for the rest of my life. I can totally understand the pressure of it being competitive taking out the passion and love, as it has done that to me. I am actually also taking a short break right now, (mainly due to health conditions) and reconfiguring the path in which I want to keep dancing. You are so blessed with such an amazing dance team--I am so happy for you!!

After quarantine I was really hoping that I could start dancing, thank you for the tips. I was wondering if you had a workout routine that kept your body in shape to be able to hold your stance while dancing. I'm new to this so I don't know how much I should be working out to prepare for this. For finding a partner to dance with, how would you go about that.
@liveyourbest
4 жыл бұрын
I do kind of have a workout routine. Usually I try and do 30 mins of cardio, 30 mins of core and upper body focused weight exercises, and 45-60 mins of legs & glutes. I alternate my days with cardio + upper body and cardio + legs/glutes. I try to workout 2 days in a row with a day of rest in between, on which I can focus more on technique things and stretching. As for finding a partner, you have to be initiative and reach out to many studios locally to see if they have someone good for your height, age, and dance level. Then schedule a try out. You can also post in FaceBook ballroom dance partner search group & do some Instagram posts, with your info, photos, and location. I’ve been super lucky with the way I’ve found my partners-everyone’s story is different! But I know a lot of people struggle with that. Good luck and keep me posted🥰 feel free to dm on Instagram @angiesartcreations if you ever need anything! 🙂

I‘m a latin dancer since I am 7 years old and I started Ballroom dancing in January and I recognized that I am really not myself while training, like I am so shy and I really shamed for not being able to remember the steps and all that. Also I‘m in a class with really developed and experienced people in my age, which makes me feel very bad in dancing. Last training I almost fell which was sooo embarrassing and I don’t know.. I actually really wanna learn but I feel like I can’t open myself. Do you have any tips ?🥺 Also I love this video
@liveyourbest
4 жыл бұрын
I can definitely speak to your experience on this. I also had the big issue of opening up probably for the first 1.5-2 years of dancing. The biggest tip I can give you, is to work on being comfortable dancing by yourself first. It can be in your room, or maybe find a time when there are no students in the studio, etc. When you are confident in your own body and with yourself, you will find it easier to not focus on the others around you and what they might think. It’s also important to realize that everyone in a dance class is focusing on themselves and no one is there to judge you or your dancing. That is not what they join dance class for. This should give you more of an ease of mind when dancing in group settings. As for your fall-everyone falls and trips all the time! Even the most professional dancers can have slip ups sometimes! Own it and laugh about it, and use it to improve and learn from for the next time. If the floor is slippery, use a shoe brush and some water on your shoes to help stick to the floor better. My dance partner and I have tripped and fallen so many times during practice and class, and so have other couples. And it’s nothing to be ashamed of!! If you feel intimidated by the more experienced dancers, know that most of them do not try to come off scary and judge mental. Most of us are immensely concentrated on technique and competitions and future planned events. So don’t be afraid, and definitely say hi and make a friend with a dancer in your class. If you share the passion and love for dance, level difference of dance doesn’t matter! I hope these tips helped a little🧡 I know it can be tough sometimes, but over time you will definitely become more confident and it will be easier to open up. Good luck!! And feel free to dm me on Instagram if you want some more advice or help @angiesartcreations 🤗

Don’t feel too old!! People start at different ages. Of course most ballroom dancers start at like 3 or 5, but not all go through with it into pro-level. It’s those who choose to put in the effort, time, and dedication who achieve success 🙌🏼 don’t be afraid and please do make it out to a studio as soon as you can!! Learning at home by yourself might cause you to start off with some misunderstood technique, which is so hard to re teach to your body later. All the best and good luck!💓

Interestingly, a ballroom instructor said my 17-year-old daughter was considered a "baby" as far as the age for competing. The instructor started at the age of 26 and has won many competitions. So, I'm not sure if you're correct in saying that you started late at the age of 15 or if her instructor is correct.
@liveyourbest
2 жыл бұрын
This is definitely interesting to hear! This very much depends on the region and how popular ballroom culture is there. In Europe for example, children start ballroom as young as 3 and already start competing at 6-7 years old or even younger. If your Instructor started at 26 and was able to achieve great success, it makes sense that they would consider 17 a baby age for competing.🙂 Although it is VERY dependant on the person’s motivation, character, passion, hard work, and external support from family/caretakers in order to be of a mature competition age and to continue growing in competition to achiever national & international results.

I’m sixteen too and I’d also like to start! I’m very afraid of how my life will play out because I know it’s going to be hard for me to afford to participate, but this is something that I’m very serious about at least trying. I feel the same way because I’ve felt late to start in everything I’ve done! When I was young, I wasn’t able to even try sports until I was 10, and I was often teased for being so late in the game. I decided to learn piano and take some dance classes too, and while I excelled in piano, I never really felt that connection to dance until my second year. Later on, I even learned how to ride horses and began competing in rodeo events after only about 6-8 months of riding. It took me a while to find ballroom dance, but in that time, I’ve tried three different sports and ultimately decided to try something else. That led me to marching band, where some of my friends have been playing for five or more years while it was my first! Even then, it was all our first year marching, and I was so proud to have done well in the physical aspect, I pushed myself to learn to play flute in two weeks! When that was over, I tried Winterguard and our entire team was new- but by our last competition before quarantine, we had won first place in our division (so about 4-5 months of practice). If I’ve learned anything in my life, it’s that if you just do your best because you want to try, the rewards are bountiful, and the experience stays with you a long time. It took me much longer than I would’ve liked to be drawn back to dance, but now I want it more than anything. If you want to try, I say go for it! I’m going to try too, and do my best! Good luck!

I can’t seem to find a partner my age who really wants to compete and has the same goals. I’m 19 and only 5,0 I don’t know international but I know both smooth and Latin. My first comp is in two weeks. I’m dancing with someone much younger than me. I’m not sure where to take my dancing which is how I ended up here. It seems like America is common for just begging you for money and never getting you to where you want to be.
@liveyourbest
3 жыл бұрын
I definitely feel on the “begging for money” part and not getting anyone anywhere. This is a major struggle of studios and sports that focus solely on the commercial goal. If you really want to grow and achieve success, I suggest you researched the qualifications and achievements of the coaches anywhere in your state, with the full intention of serious and competitive growth, and take private classes from them. I believe age doesn’t matter when it comes to something you want to seriously pursue and dream about. If you work hard, love it, and stay in initiative in regards to other people in the field/coaches/studios-you will find the correct people for you to achieve these dreams and push you in the correct direction!! Good luck to you in everything, thank you for watching :) 💛

I'm planning to start ballroom dancing this year (20 yo) but I'm not very tall... Would that be an issue?
@liveyourbest
2 жыл бұрын
No not at all! Petite dancers are actually a benefit because when you’re taller, there is a big limit to the maximum speed for turns and how fast you can move. This just means you’d need a partner who’s 2-4 inches taller than you :) I’m only 164cm and I danced with someone who was 172cm when I started!

I didn't even think about that! My instructor wants me to compete in December this year. Do you have a warm-up video and do you have a video that explains what to wear? I've been struggling with this for lessons. (So far I've manged to wear skirts and leggings) but is there anything really specific I should be made aware of?
@liveyourbest
3 жыл бұрын
That’s amazing!! Glad this video could be of help:) unfortunately I don’t have either videos made on my channel, and won’t be making ballroom related content as I am on a ballroom leave for the time being. I may get back into it in the future, but that is unknown ! I can advise you to purchase specifically ballroom or latin style skirts, as that gives you the proper needed movement and allows you to feel the dance and your body better. Also invest in some tights and leotards to wear with your skirts!! It’s a much different feel than having leggings under a skirt or being worried about your skirt flying up when bare legged😉 I also don’t recommend loose shirts, as it’s harder to see your form, and it creates unnecessary traction during movement. For the winter I suggest some tight fitting turtlenecks and/or wear scarves during warm up as it gets cold! And muscles are more likely to get injured if not warm enough in a cold environment. As for a warm up video, I do have some montages of my warm ups or stretches in some of my practice or week In a life vlogs:) good luck in your ballroom journey!

@@liveyourbest Thank you so much for the response! I actually am looking at some of the clothes you suggested wearing right now! @@OxxiM00N for practice, I suggest you check nudebarre convertible tights, they’re probably one of the most durable tights of their type ! If you can wear nude no-show socks on top of them, they are less likely to rip at the soles and around toes. And for competitions, if you wear tights they have to be only nude fishnet tights. Those also rip after a few wears, but the best brand I’ve tried is Capezio for those. Lasted me 5 comps which is quite a lot for fishnets!!

Latin definitely favors curvier girls - and quite frankly I wish I have a naturally curvy body. It wouldn’t get in any way of your dancing!
