Every art is inspired by others or by nature, if you're making a fantasy creature for example, even though it's your own creative idea it's still inspired by things like animals in one way or another, you're just taking all the inspiration and knowledge about our universe and thinking about different ways to modify it to come up with your own creation. So whoever is reading this don't hesitate to copy others(as long as you're not breaking any copyright laws), get inspired because that's how you learn art. You analyze what's already out there, try to copy it, and modify it (this is where you get creative).

A software I recommend if you are a beginner who does not know yet if they want to do pixel art is Piskel. It is so simple you won't need any tutorials on it and you can just work on things like outlines and color without needing to worry about how to get to the correct tab tools like the paint bucket. It has less tools than other software, but intentionally so that it is easy for anyone to use.

Another software I suggest is *GIMP* . Even if it's a sort of free version of Photoshop still it can be used for pixel art but you have to download some plugins for make sprites.

3:06 Ngl on a Scale of just Pixels you don't need a Tablet. A Mouse may even be more percise. Furthermore, some of the key features of a tablet like Pressure Levels most of the Time are pretty much useless in Pixel Art. Though when you do HD digital art, a Tablet is necissary imo.

In regards to using (or preferring) a Tablet or a Mouse... I may use both, for the same reasons you described. If I want to sketch something, a tablet may help (depending on the size of the piece, especially), because at that early stage I'm not interested in being precise, I'm interested in being fast. But when I do need to be precise, which is most of the time, I will use a mouse. EDIT: Actually, I may even use pencil and paper to sketch things out.

I would personally say to learn using free software, that way you don't end up wasting money on something you may never use. With that, I'd say GraphicsGale is what I am using at the moment, and must suggest GIMP for those looking for something more aligned with Photoshop. If you are wanting to get into old-school programs: a port of Grafx2, an old Amiga-era program, has been around for a while, and is quite popular. As for tools, I use a mouse for the reasons already stated.

As a pixel hobbyist for a year, my take to begin pixel art? Search Saint11 and Cyangmou, go to lospec and get used to a palette without hassle of learning colour theory, get Aseprite THE master race app. Use a mouse, don’t waste money it’s more accurate. Canvas size? study posting dimensions for IG, twitter and platforms you want to post on. Adv Technique? Search (1) Rotoscoping, (2) Converting 3d to pixelart (deadcells) or (3) Aftereffects pixelart animation. I don’t go for 2 & 3, I do encourage rotoscope. Takes 6 months to get good drawing everyday, start with basic shapes and shading. Look up Sirducknight, Diemango, Cyangmou, Endesga, Mizorehi, Turtleye, soaph, jtangc, paul robertson. All the best!

You can do whatever you want in art . . . but there's a reason we have school/college/University courses and tutorials and the like that teach all these best-practice methods of creating [good] art. So I would certainly recommend to anyone wanting to learn pixel art, and actually be both good at it and have a look and style to your work that is broadly appealing, to properly learn most of the rules before you break them. I know some people like to say art is all "subjective", but if it were that simple there would be no such thing as art school or art critics or art competitions or art tutorials on KZitem, or [somehow] art styles that many people seem to love vs art styles that strangely almost no one seems to like or only a tiny minority can appreciate--because how could we even determine that the person judging or teaching has anything worthwhile to say at all if it's all subjective and even utterly fugly art is just a matter of "opinion" no matter what. So, yeah, go do the tutorials you see on channels like MortMort's and learn art from the people who do actually follow the rules and best practices 99% of the time (as proven by how great their art looks and how many of you want to emulate them). Or else good luck with your crap art that does everything wrong and that very few people will like but you can subjectively applaud all by your little self. Remember how Sonic looked in the Sonic The Hedgehog movie before they fixed him. . . . Yeah, exactly. There clearly is such a thing a bad art & design, and indeed best practices and good rules you really should try to follow for the most part, even if it's ultimately all subjective. But I'll tell you this for free: It's pretty dang easy to create "crap" art. Just don't learn any art techniques; don't practice and hone your skills; don't take any time and consideration over your art; don't care about making it aesthetically appealing to anyone other than yourself; break all the rules you don't even know about anyway; and believe everyone that tells you it's all subjective regardless, and sorted! It takes a little more than that to make "good" art, though, unfortunately.

To add to what Mort has said: The sprite and tile sizes themselves don't really matter on today's computers, but if you want to capture that old-school sprite/tile look--and why are you doing sprite stuff if you don't--then you should try to keep your sprite sizes is the multiples format that old systems used, going from usually 8x8 all the way up to 128x128 for sprites . And the same is generally true of background tile sizes as well, although you don't have to be so strict with that imo, and can go bigger for levels where you want everything to look a bit more unique and less tiled. I think with the actual canvas, which can have many sprites and/or tiles in one image, it's best practice not to go above something like 2048x2048 as I recall. If you want a screen resolution for your game that also captures the classic console look then I would go for something like 256x224 (the SNES' resolution) or 320×224 (the Genesis' resolution) as those are instantly recognizable to most people and both perfect multiples of the tile sizes you should be using too. Going lower starts going more into portable console territory, like a Game Boy or Game Gear, or gets that "modern" pixel look that has less detail than even old pixel games tended to have and often looks a bit strange with characters not even having eyes or any details on their clothes and the like, which I'm not a fan of personally.

Re: Outlines. There's actually a bit more than just personal preference here. There's mechanical reasons why you might want an outline. For instance, many JRPGs use outlines to show status effects like poison, near death, etc by palette shifting the outline color. If that's not a concern though, then it falls back to preference.
