When I was young boy back in the late 50’s. My dad had me mix half corn and half shorts in 5 gallon bucket plus table scraps plus water soak over night. Fed that every day. We sold hogs and killed hogs. Good days! Wish I a gridiron like yours..

What's your thoughts on raising hogs in the woods and rotating them through different paddocks? We've got more woods and mountain than flat land. Just trying to utilize whatever we have!
@HomesteadingtheHardWay

Nothing wrong with putting them in the woods just remember they will kill the trees even if you rotate them . Use that to your advantage to clear land

I’m almost embarrassed to say this, but it works, if there are too many holes in the tin roof you can fill them with a dab of caulk, or caulk with a piece of tin foil underneath if the opening is too large. I had to do that once at my Mom’s to keep the rain from deconstructing her adobe. It extends the life of the tin you are using and keeps the animals dry. Thank you for the details of constructing the pig shelters! Will you keep any of your red ale piglets to breed later?

I'm loving your channel! In your opinion does a hog do better in an outdoor shelter like this or keep them in a barn all the time. I thought they would like to be outside some. But my Uncle said indoor all the time. We are in the northern panhandle of WV if that matters
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
4 жыл бұрын
Short answer is they will grow faster inside but I think they seem a lot more content with being on dirt . Its kinda long and complicated the ,in the house vs on the ground debate and how cold or hot it is has a lot to do with it as well as regulations , cost , waste management . It's a really good idea for a video thank you !

@HomesteadingtheHardWay

They claim it will if the pigs chew it but I've never had a problem but some people don't like to see it in all natural natural hog operations . I think if it's not still wet from treatment its fine .

Hi Chris! I really like the looks of your last farrowing pen and shelter. What is the size of the shelter and pen if I may ask?
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
2 жыл бұрын
The shelter is 8 by 8 the pens 16 by 24 , they work good you just need watch the sow digging a hole and level it out but I lose fewer pigs on the dirt floor it's soft and and if she lays or steps on one it doesn't always kill it like on concrete

Hello Chris, I'm fixing to get started with feeder pigs. Does the smell of pig manure become real strong close and far away from the pens? If so is there a way to mitigate the smell or is it just something that comes with raising pigs? Thank you for your time and God bless!
@HomesteadingtheHardWay

You can't eliminate it but you can control it , put the pens in a well drained area , ditch to control water and lime regularly . Being able to move feeders at least to a clean pen at least once helps a lot .

The walk way between pens is 4 ft wide and the chut is 32 inches wide ramps a foot high . Mines that wide because some of our breeding stocks in the 800 lb range if all you're loading is tops 24 inches would be better so they couldn't turn around on you . Ramp hight depends on trailer hight, mines low because I never know what customer will show up with .
