Beginners -This freaking works! Thanks for the great tip, Eric! I am a real newbie to metalworking and had NEVER used a grinder with a cutting wheel until about an hour ago. I was too lazy to practice and just clamped a guide onto the 1/8" workpiece and fired her up. I ended up with a perfectly straight and clean cut on my first attempt ever.

+Jack of All Trades Thanks! I'm glad it helped you out. As has been pointed out many times below, whenever possible, always use your guard. Which is exactly what I'm not doing in the vid lol!

The guide idea works. Using a grinder one handed and with no guard will land you in the ER. Don't ask how I know that.

Make sure your medical and life insurance are up to date before using a cut off wheel without a guard. Especially since you are begging for the wheel to shatter running up against something on the side like that.

Good tip , but might want to put the guard on the grinder if the wheel breaks
@EricJemAndes

Yeah, I suggest that people do that too. Personally, since I don't use the gaurd on the angle grinder much, I always wear a pair of sealed goggles, and a face shield. Plus, I never work in close to others. I don't use the gaurd on my angle grinder most of the time, because I'm usually cutting pieces in tight spots, or off of a chassis. You are right, that gaurds on angle grinders really should ALWAYS be used when possible. Thanks NRXTM.

Yes plse use a guard especially if you are in close proximity to your grinder and gloves too. Wheels do not usually break unless the grinder is being used incorrectly or to much pressure is placed on the grinder/wheel. Hope for the best but plan for the worst and you won't go far wrong in life... :) I'm a Electrical/Mechanical Engineer and have worked in and around metal cutting machines for approx 35 years without injury to myself or more importantly to others..i see this is a old PM now, but this is left for others to read just i just did lol.

i would use and angle iron for the guide. Those tend to flex less then flat stock.
@EricJemAndes

+bob rosco Angle is a good idea too. I personally use the flat bar because I always have some in stock for my projects. I rarely fab with angle. For me bowing is an issue cause I always clamp or weight it. However, that being said, depending on the circumstances of each person, a thick piece of angle may be a better guide/straight edge material than the flat stock. Thanks for the idea, and the comment!

bob rosco yeah, that is a good idea, plus I have lots of heavy angle iron about the place, I don't have any steel flat bar, I have plenty of aluminium, but it has the obvious draw back of being to soft.

+pwntagerz I'll have to put up a vid of how I use my sheild. The bottom of my sheild touches my chest and covers my neck up to the cap I wear under the sheild. So, the worst case would be hitting my stomach and lower chest. Which has happened. I do understand that it's not the safest thing. It's just hard to get an angle grinder up inside the chassis to cut at all the different angles I need for my fabrication mods when I have the guard on it.

pwntagerz blade failings are NOT rare, and are responsible for many many accidents. I am not saying that I haven't done it before (used without guard), in the past, but I have seen some horrible injuries with these things, they need treating with the utmost respect. I have 7 angle grinders, mainly because I can, but it is quicker to pick up another grinder in the shop than it is to change discs etc. Some have flap wheels, some wire wheels, some have thick metal removal discs etc, you can never have enough grinders. Anyway, no matter how good you are at working with a grinder, the thin (especially 1mm) discs are renowned for the great and quick cutting ability, but they are brittle. They only need a little bit to chip off and then for the grinder to grab.......it happens.....seen it plenty of times, which is why I now always wear full ppe when using grinders. One of them suckers with rip your face to shreds, work in a big shop every day and then tell me failures are rare!

I completely agree with you. As I mentioned before (in the above comment, and in other comments (as responses to other viewers), it's not about if these cutoff wheels explode, it's about getting into tight spaces on chassis and such. Which you can't do with a blade guard many times. That being said, I do always suggest guards when possible. Unfortunately, I had a bright idea to make this vid on a whim, and as it was spare of the moment, I didn't think about installing the guard again.

+NeoNe0 I appreciate the concern and the comment. In fact, the stats show that more accidents happen to experienced tool users over inexperienced. I'm trying to get better at it, but I had having to take the guard off, and put it back on every other cut just so that I can cut something off a chassis, use the wire wheel (which doesn't fit with the guard on), or use the fap wheels/flat sanding disks. In fact, they only thing that my guard does fit with, are the cutoff wheels and the grinding disks. So, I've grown accustomed to not using it... Maybe one day I'll get a shop and have plasma. Till then, I'll continue to try and get better at using the guard, even as inconvenient as it is. Thanks for the concern though!

@EricJemAndes
7 жыл бұрын
The info below may be obvious to you, but incase it's not. I'll explain a few bumper/fabrication, piece design and making techniques that I use. You should be able to. I've done a few 3/16" plate off-road projects. Bumpers, leaf shackles, and other things. Even a Cheap Ryobi 4.5" angle grinder will be able to do what you need. Just don't rush the cutting. Cut at the speed of the angle grinder. Also, it might be a good idea to get you some cutting wax. If you want your pieces to fit the best, make the bumper from 1/4" plywood, or double wall cardboard first. Then trace your shapes onto steel, and then cut them out. If you had the shapes fitting tightly when put together in the Plywood/Cardboard form, then they should also fit well when turned into steel pieces. Also, keep a close eye on how you cut the pieces out. Remember that marking piece means (typically speaking) that you need to cut directly on the line (eating the line), or you need to cut for the inside of the line. If you cut on the outside of the lines, your pieces will tend to be to big (if they fit correctly when you made the templates. I hope this helps some.

@EricJemAndes
7 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't find that guards are a bad idea. I just find that we all get over confident. Even myself, and we get used to doing things the simple and easy way. Not always the safe way. Studies have shown, over and over again, that people who are the most familiar with power tools, are typically the ones that have the worst injuries.

"people who are the most familiar with power tools, are typically the ones that have the worst injuries." Probably has more to do with the frequency of tool use, in all honesty.

@EricJemAndes

+George Siatos Since I spend almost half my time cutting things off of vehicle chassis, and the guards don't fit in most spots, under the chassis, you will rarely see a guard on my grinder. I use a full face sheild and google under that. The bottom of my sheild touches my chest and covers my neck up to the cap I wear under the sheild. So, the worst case would be hitting my stomach and lower chest. Which has happened. I do understand that it's not the safest thing. It's just hard to get an angle grinder up inside the chassis to cut at all the different angles I need for my fabrication mods when I have the guard on it, while laying on the ground.

Adam Weekley Damn right, you can't get any decent cuts done with the guard. If anything it impedes your view of what you are cutting! Also, yes it can be dangerous, but no more than anything driving your car, as long as you have a good feel for the tool you will be fine, I have been using these things for years without guards. Yes I have had what some would call close calls eg the grinder jumping up and hitting me in the face shield, but that is why I use a 3M rated face shield! So I don't lose my face! I also use kevlar gloves because I like my fingers. Just because I don't use the guard doesn't mean I cannot work safely.

I've been cutting metal with these tools for 60 years. Still got both eyes. Some tools I might operate without a guard - This isn't one of them. Stupidly risky.
