Oddly enough I've found that a good source of information/tutorials on lighting, composition, temperature and mood actually came from books on art, a good one for me was a watercolour sketching tutorial book from the public library.

I am really glad I found your channel. I used to draw all the time in middle school, and I got pretty good. Then, when I started high school back in 2011, my work load got much heavier, and I didn't have much time to draw. I only drew occasionally in my first two years, then for some reason just stopped drawing altogether in my junior year. I have now graduated, and have almost completely forgotten how to draw. I have been meaning to start drawing again for some time, but never had the confidence to just do it. I always thought that my drawings looked bad, and that I would never get any better. Even the slightest mistake would make me want to give up. Over the last five-ish years, my mom (who is an art major) has bought me various drawing materials for birthdays and Christmas in hopes of getting me drawing again, but I still beat myself up over every little thing I did wrong, and held myself up to such impossibly high standards to the point that it wasn't even fun anymore. I almost gave up on drawing completely. Then I found some art channels here on KZitem, and started to feel like maybe I could learn again. What really pushed me over the edge was this video about how to use India ink. Unfortunately, my Poppy just passed away recently. He was also an artist, and had a lifetimes collection worth of art books and supplies. When my mom was cleaning out his house, she collected a couple boxes of miscellaneous art supplies that she thought she or I might want to try out. Among this stuff was about a dozen dip pen handles, a small box of about 50 assorted nibs, and a half used 8 oz. bottle of India ink. I had no idea what to do with it at first, but then I happened across this video a week or so ago. Since then, I have started following some of your other drawing tutorials, working up to the point where I feel ready to use the India ink. After watching your videos, rather than feeling intimidated and disgruntled at the idea of drawing, I feel inspired and determined to build up my skills again. Thank you for your awesome videos, and for reawakening my passion for drawing.

I've been waiting for this tutorial! My tools of choice are sepia acrylic ink and manga pens (G Pen for main lines, School Nib for smaller details, and Saji Pen for straight lines and background) But I do use a lot of black ink when I ink my mangas. I plan on getting purple and blue for sweet and underwater drawings too! One thing I learned the hard way, tho: "Permanence AA" does not mean waterproof!! I wasted $6 on a good drawing ink online only to find out the lines bleed when I applied watercolor :( I really thought it meant it was permanent... Also, make sure the nib is on snugly! To quote one of my favorite drawing books "A loose pen holder is bad news!"

PixiePrincess501 Good tips!!! Thank you! One thing I may have forgotten to specify is that there are some differences between inks so check the labels. And I guess permanent doesn't mean waterproof...weird.

You can get drawing pens that have an inner ink well that you refill as needed, as well as brushes that you can either fill with water (for ease of waterpainting) or ink. These two tools are kind of limited though, so you will want to still try out some other methods. I find that the "fountain" style pens are great, if you have different sized nibs. I can get away with a large, medium, and small nib- for anything else I use fineliners or the aqua brush filled with ink. The fountain pens are also great for continuous lines, unless you are really good with a dip pen, in which case it doesn't really matter.

oi, just wondering if you would know, Mary, can a lefty is dip pens to draw and doodle whatnot or is it just for right handed peeps? cause I'm mostly a left handed artist person but I do write with my right hand. if can, any tips for a lefty?
@marydoodles
9 жыл бұрын
+Dragon21Studios I can't say, as I've never been left handed...Nor do I associate with left handed people. They're ok, I guess. :) I feel like these pens are very universal. Any thoughts from leftys out there?

Lots of the time, if you write with ink pens you may smudge, because your hand goes over the ink, so you'd have to be very careful with drawing. I'm sure if you look you can find some invention to help with this. Hope this helped :)
@charcoaldiver
9 жыл бұрын
+Dragon21Studios I guess just like right-handed people can smudge if they draw sth on the left side and then happen to put their arm on sth they drew before - lefties can draw on the right side and then happen to put their arm on sth they drew earlier. Either youre just careful as a right-handed or left-handed person or you draw structured. As a leftie you should start from the top-right then and work to the bottom-left. Now.... Im a left-handed artist - at least thats how I call myself :D and it works just as good as it should for right-handed peps. Its not like it makes the drawing process different is it?
@benw9949
9 жыл бұрын
+Dragon21Studios -- Two answers: 1. There *are* left-handed nibs and holders available. Look for lefty or left-handed when you search online, or ask someone if you don't find them at your local store. I'm right-handed, but I've seen them available for calligraphy and drawing. 2. You can modify how you hold the pen and whether you put your hand down on the page. But when using a dip pen (or a fountain pen), try not to put the heel of your hand on the paper anyway. Hope this helps.

Cool techniques! My favorite india ink is probably Speedball Super Black india ink because it's both waterproof and copic marker proof. Basically, it's awesome for shading and line art that can't get smudged by anything you color the drawings with once it's dry. I also keep around a cheap water brush (water brushes are basically refillable brush pens) filled with this ink but watered down since its tough to find gray pens that are marker-proof. I mostly color with markers, colored ink and watercolors with a bit of colored pencil for details. That's awesome that the Black Cat ink comes in those huge amounts since I use black and gray a ton in my art since I draw lots of gloomy steampunk/epic fantasy anime style art. I'm going to have to check that brand out!

I’d add that you should prep your nib. You can run it through a flame and then wipe with saliva and a paper towel. Some people use potatoes (stick the nib in for a few minutes). The point (no pun) is to remove the factory oils that prevent the nibs from rusting. The ink struggles to hold on to the nib otherwise.

We used rice paper in my Mandarin Chinese class at least once a month for several years, when practicing traditional calligraphy/character writing! I love rice paper!!! it's very thin, but designed to help avoid bleeding, just make sure you write on the glossy side of the paper, and put a tablecloth or simply some felt under the paper you're drawing on. In the video, she reccomends holding your wrist at an angle, so that the brush isn't perfectly up and down with the paper, but that is exactly what traditional teaching of Chinese calligraphy tells you to do, however, I would leave it to your own artistic liberties. The paper crinkles a bit if you use too much ink, so be ready for that to happen. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them as best as I can.

I had some experience with rice paper, rice paper is EXTREMELY THIN, it is a lot like tracing paper, except it doesn't have that oily texture on it. If you are doing a wet medium, put something underneath the paper, because it will transfer.
