After 8 years of sorting and a couple of bricklink orders and clearance cycles later, I'm ready to start making a moc.

The "sort a few minutes each day" trick can be pared down even further. I can sometimes set aside space in my living room for sorting, and every time I walk through I'll pick up a piece or two and put it where it needs to go. Every little bit helps.

I'd personally recommend to start sorting from smaller pieces. As a bionicle builder, having technic parts readily available really hastens the building process. I haven't sorted my larger parts yet, but they are generally easier to find either way.

I think sorting by colour is the best way to sort if you have a lack of storage space. One thing I do reccomend for specific pieces of a colour is to get a very small set of storage draws to put each type of piece in.

2:37 That gave me a chuckle. Excellent editing there. Also, a whole drawer for stickers! I've never been one to use them in my MOCs so those just stay with the boxes for the sets I don't keep together and find their way into storage. 4:02 RIP Aquaman. We knew thee... hardly at all until December 2019.

I organize mine based on type but my piece to bin sorting ratio is around 2:1 to 6:1 so I have to mix some pieces or I'll have to double the bin size for some types

For those who live in Australia: Bunnings useally has a free box section at the checkout section of the store. If you can't afford to buy storage let alone more piece, i recommend this option. :)

We use a really mixed method, you're right that there's no right way except the way that works for your collection and what works for you. My daughter and I have sorted by color for 4 specific categories. All bricks, all plates 2x and larger, all slopes including inverted and finally all larger random pieces that do not fit the above categories. This way all colors have 4 bins that stack neatly on top of each other. All other specialty pieces be they clips, bars, snots, hinges, technic, modified bricks, modified plates etc get places in 9 3 drawer steralite containers the 14x12x10 ones and we've purchased stori 6x6, 3x2, 2x2 trays for the inside. These pieces are sorted by function rather than specific type and all colors mixed together. This method seems to work well for our current collection now though i see another 3 drawers in our near future and we'll have to split out some function pieces by color but that's a problem for future us.

I sort by part. Now all I need is more storage containers. I use the Ziplock small square. And I will do both as needed. But I will sort trans from solid and marble for sure. Also cool vid

I have mine sorted by type, I'd like to sort into smaller categories but I don't have the drawer space right now lol. I haven't sorted my system parts much, some of the ones I use on mocs a ton are sorted but most are in a big bucket.

Great video Ben. I'm glad to see you're continuing this series. I really enjoy your style of showing the different shots of your sorting arrangement while you do a voice over, but the problem I think this video has is its maybe a little too generic. It posits "You should sort your lego" But doesn't really gave any credit to which method works best for you. Kinda looks like you're doing "all of the above." And I think maybe focusing the advice on which methods tend to work best is a good idea, especially since the people this is most for are people who haven't entered into sorting their parts, or are looking for guidance on better ways to do so. Simply put, my only real critique, is "Focus the advice more." I know you're not about telling people what to do, and prefer to let builders find their own way. But the flipside of that is those builders probably want some solid advice from an established builder they respect. I'm also a firm believer in passing on the ideas or techniques best employed by yourself. I think you could have done more to show which methods of sorting you prefer, what works for your style of building, and maybe why. Overall I think it's just a bit too vague. Though I did like the part where you told them to buy as many of that storage unit as they could. That's definitely a problem. This might also be a good point to bring up when selecting containers, go with brands that are readily available in your region. I think these are great videos, that are sorely needed in the community, but focus in on your advice, and lead more by example than just showing all of the options. Some methods of sorting are vastly better than others. So I do disagree that there's no wrong way to sort. Keep up the great work Ben!

So for the past 15 years I've been using shoe box bins. I'm not entirely sure why they're called that as they never have been able to fit a pair of shoes in them, they can hold one each, but now you're just wasting space. Anyway, they're super cheap, just less than $1 USD, even cheaper after Christmas for about a month. Sterilite 6Qt/5.7L bins. Go with Target over Walmart because the Walmart ones are a slightly different model and even more flimsy for the same price, you don't want that. Target has the sturdier models. LEGO bricks get surprisingly heavy. That's been a good start, but I've lived by the color only method and well, we're running into problems now. My mind tends to work off of color first, then specific part within that color. But the bins are jammed packed, and I've actually separated almost all of the ten bins of black into specific categories, and for the most part, all my other colors have at least been split up into basic bricks of those colors and everything else. I've still got a few bins free for build accumulation and parts runover when digging for parts. I like that a lot. The Grűschteling of the parts being rummaged through is nostalgic from when all the parts were in one giant bin. I have yet to invest in a bunch of smaller bins because I feel they'll take up too much space. I don't have the roooooom. The nice thing about these larger bins is that there's less negative space between the bricks. I'm looking at this video and holy crap, that's a lot of brick spread along a large space. But yeah, I probably do need to start separating further. I'll have to see what's going on after Christmas. Problem is though, I doubt people are giving out unsorted nuts and bolts and screws that need to be sorted. You can't store wires and lights in small drawers. I doubt those multi bin containers are on the cheap very often. When it comes to useful parts you want to find easily, try using those bags people send parts in from BrickLink orders. Particularly if you have some smaller parts you want to find easily if you don't have a little bin/drawer for them already. I've also heard of people using larger sip bags for parts in the color method. Makes sense, I just still haven't employed it, and with my collection, it's probably a little late, I really do need to be thinking more small bins than just big ones. But it is a tactic I've heard to be useful. The whole thing with sets. Man, I've done that for years. Well, not necessarily taking them apart in a bin, but I am always cross referencing BrickLink to see if I even own a part or where I can get it from my Star Wars collection. Then when the MOC's done, I put those pieces back if they came from there. Super helpful. The bigger problem is remembering where the parts are supposed to go after all that time if it took awhile to make the MOC or you liked it too much to take apart for a year. There have even been a few times I had to rebuild the whole set because the part was so deep in the design or I forgot where it went. Here's some advice for collectors: If any of you have sets built for display, take them apart every now and then, it not only keeps your parts from kind of gluing each other together (Seriously, try taking apart a set that's been put together for more than ten years, some of those parts really latch to one another.), but it also familiarizes you with the parts they contain should you ever need them for a MOC and don't want to buy two parts from someone on BrickLink. This is a really good video Ben, it got me to really write something big and chunky. I haven't really done that since I keep getting hacked on MOCpages.

Hey Ben Cossy. I have a question. What would your reaction be if you saw people using mega construx pieces, either mega construx different bricks or mega construx colours?
@BenCossyOfficial
5 жыл бұрын
My reaction? Hmmm I mean it depends on how it's used. If it's in a unique, clever way that achieves something very cool, then that would be nice to see. But honestly I don't really like or approve of Mega construx as a brand. While the quality of their products has improved, I prefer seeing 100% LEGO in MOC's :)
