Rich, Imam in my mid 70's. Started real estate photography after 40 years in real estate. Went from a photography to making a profession out of it 4 years ago. Windows have always been my problem. I am working on this window pull idea until I get it right. Seems to take a lot o practice for me, guess it is my age. Having trouble but threw you videos I will get it right. You are a master and I and many others appreciate all you videos. Thank You

Hi Rich great video and all your other videos I really appreciate! I've got a little dilemma. I work with a gentleman who shoots residential homes, and commercial properties. I used to shoot with a Canon and three YN560III's. Shot in manual mode selecting the settings of the power of the flash, while holding the other two directing to where I needed fill light. it was working really well. Minimal blow out some windows and when I could I would shoot ambient. I had damaged my Canon camera and lense. Tried a friends Sony A6000, and the rest is history. Now that I am back shooting real estate, I can not set my camera up to allow me to shoot have the Sony flash as the master, and my 2 other YN as slaves. The Flash is the Sony HVL F43M. Found a great deal on a used Sony E4/ 10-18 lense. My HDR outside shooting is looking really good, Inside I shoot regular single shots, but want to shoot like I used to metering off the windows, and than selecting what power to shoot the YN flashes in my hands. I ask people about this, and they go on a long dissertation of all the triggers I need to invest in, and all of the other things I need to do. Your reply is greatly appreciated, especially since my new partner is really frustrated with me not shooting. i greatly appreciate your courses and videos you put on for us! Cheers, John Kaddouri

I shoot flash that way too and I've never seen any one else in FB groups or anywhere that does it that way. I have a Think Tank belt where I can keep 2 flashes on and right in front of me in their respective pouches. The master is on camera and pointed straight up or in back and it's mostly there to trigger the other 2 which I hold in my hands pointed at wall to ceiling joints - triggered with the optical sensor. So I shoot a bracket first, check my focus, then I start shooting flash. I expose for the windows and light the rooms with flash. I'm thinking about using a pole the way Rich has his on light stands to get a little closer to ceilings and corners and so forth.

Hey Rich! Is the Sony a7ii or a7iii better for real estate photography? I’ve asked 4 other pro photographers and majority of them say the a7iii. Context: I shoot music videos which are mainly shot in very low light conditions. I’m currently shooting everything on my Nikon D7200. I’m also wanting to really step up my light game with real estate. I’ve watched this particular video several times. This time I’m trying to figure out what triggers to buy and additional lights to purchase. I use a few of your ideas and they’ve helped me a great bit, so I appreciate your tutorials. I would like to see you do more real estate shoot tutorials. How do you set up lighting when in a dark room and avoid having a light spot in the wall? How do you beautiful expose a deep room and keep all colors in tact? Many more questions but this is already a book. Thanks bro!

For sure get the a7III as it’s a far superior camera especially for AF and ISO But for real estate stills basically any camera will work great.

Hi Rich ! ah great stuff ! - wow and you linked me right to the perfect spot thanks ! NEW subscriber ! here. I've been wathcing too many of your videos, some really amazing info you have ! At this very moment I'm watching one from May 10, 2016 - masking in an ambient image. I'm still trying to get my head around that darken stuff..... in each of your videos you explain it a slightly different way so I'm slowly getting it. I just shot 3 images about 1/2 an hour ago in my house and am going to practice. Rich, we are having a major snowstorm up here right now as I type this ( I'm in Canada ) NOT fun for March, but... that's how it goes. I actually had to snowblow my driveway about 9 am this morning just to get my car out of the driveway. Anyway, thank you ! That darken blend mode is a tricky one, it really is. It's kind of like knowing a magician's trick, you see how it's done, but you still can't 100% get your head around it sort of thing haha. Thanks for writing back Rich !

How do you know where to start off with your flash power? Figuring that the aperture is set at a constant perhaps f8, and the shutter at the camera's sync speed perhaps 1/60 or 1/250, flash power seems like the only variable to set - but, what power to start with? Especially with multiple flashes, which ones get set on what? Seems very confusing.

@RichBaum

Everything I shoot is RAW.. there is much more info to work with and easier to fix / adjust than JPEGS. For delivery I always send to folders, on with JPEGS sized for MLS ( 1,260 x 1,250 Pxls) and one Large (3000x3000) You may need to check with your local MLS to see what they recommend.

Very good tutorial Rich, like many others of yours. I am currently going through your premium course "Mastering Architecture and Real Estate Photography" and I find it extremely useful. If I am not wrong, you do not use polarizer filters to control reflections in your shootings. Is there a specific reason for this? Thank you.
@RichBaum
5 жыл бұрын
I am not saying you should not, I am just saying that from our tests during my workshops we found the results to be extremely inconsistent so it's not like a CP filter will help 100% of the time, for us it was like 30% but again I am not saying not to try / use one

7 жыл бұрын
That's funny because I never adjust the flash zoom.. It's just something I have never dealt with..
@michaelandrew83
7 жыл бұрын
Adjusting the fresnel zoom on the flash is very effective, you can zoom all the way in the narrow the "beam" of light exiting the flash head which can serve a number of functions. In regards to interiors you can place the flash lower, zoom in for higher ceilings to bounce with the same effective coverage as a wider setting and a low ceiling. It is somewhat similar to using a zoom style reflector all though the light spill is still there so it is not to be used in place of an actual modifier.
@gregevans1478
7 жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense. Thanks Michael.
@builthatch
7 жыл бұрын
ha - i have been asking the same question and generally, people tell me they keep it at the wide setting. they don't touch it. i am playing with it but generally, keep them at widest with the diffuser tucked, so it's like 20 mm or something.
@radosch
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it makes sense to me to use the widest zoom for the lit shot (i.e. ceiling bounce) - but perhaps zoom it in a little bit for the "window pull" shot as you only need light for the window area and the flash is a few meters in front of the window...

Hey Rich. Really enjoying your tutorials. I have an opportunity to go out and shoot some real estate for my real estate agent in order to build my portfolio (I'm not even sure this is the right place to ask this question....). I want to build my portfolio and hopefully start to make this into a business, and begin to charge after a few shoots. She told me the price that agents were paying for shoots was around $150, but that doesn't sound right to me. I live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, and I feel like that price is waaaaayyy too low. Do you have any thoughts on how I should progress through this, and what the price point should be in the beginning? Thanks again for all the great information. I really appreciate it.

At what exposures do you shoot the brackets? When you do the flash shots, how many stops below ambient do you shoot?
@RichBaum

Rustin, It's very hard to give a general answer as every room is different, so you need to experiment. i will say that generally the ambient exposure is in the ball park of 1/10sec but can be much slower of as fast at 1/100sec or more and flash I like to teach people to at least use 1/20sec to start controlling the ambient but that can easily be 1/80 or 1/165sec or more. Hope this helps
@rustinroy9911

Rich Baum thanks. I used to shoot HDR for Airbnb. They wanted -2, 1, 4 combined with the lights off. Starting to get into flash. Another guy said to expose the ambient slightly right of center and do the flash normally two stops faster as a starting point. But he said the flash could be 1, 2, or 3 stops faster depending on the situation. Sounds similar to your advice.

Was checking it out...bit pricy at $299. But it's what am looking for. Is your iPad shoulder strap custom?

The only thing I learned from this video is to use a wireless mic instead of the inferior camera mic.

Hey Rich. I am a new subscriber. Great video. Question, I just want to understand. So I can set my camera for HDR and take a 3 exposure set to insure that I get a good ambient shot and then if things fail afterwords I can just merge them as HDR? Is there a better way to get the ambient shot? Thanks Bill
