Behind the Story of the Gedhe Kauman Mosque in Yogyakarta
The Gedhe Kauman Mosque in Yogyakarta is one of the oldest mosques in the city of Yogyakarta. This mosque is located on the west side of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace. The Gedhe Kauman Mosque was built by the first king of the Yogyakarta Palace, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I.
The Gedhe Kauman Mosque is known as the grand mosque of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, which is located right in the North Square of Yogyakarta. This mosque existed at the beginning of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, which was established in 1773 AD.
The Gedhe Kauman Mosque has a magnificent interior with Javanese nuances built with pillars of 500 years old intact teak wood. The Gedhe Kauman Mosque is usually used by the Sultan of Yogyakarta and his people to worship, especially when there are events commemorating major Islamic holidays.
