The Schmitt triggers are for the oscillators. The TL074's are output op amps. The other op amps are likely used for saw to square wave conversion (both as audio oscillator and the clock to the sequencer), buffers, and inverters. The shift registers are used for sequencer clock subdivisions. The ARM processor is basically the same as those used in Arduino and Teensy controllers, the CPU brains for this device and the EEPROM is program memory. The 5 pin white connector seems to make this possible to use with Eurorack. The stuff over by the power entry is mostly MIDI since all the power conversion is done in the wall wart. It is a computer control analog synth with MIDI. All the pieces make sense to me.

Square > saw? (without seeing the whole video yet), Roland did that in Juno-106. Integrator. Downside is the need for amplitude control related to the frequency. Juno did that control voltage by the voice board CPU, so it minimized the electronics. Well. I don't know about TD-3, yet :)

Thank you! It's like this thing is designed to be hacked/modded/bent. Plenty of room, easy access, and even big giant mounting holes to put standoffs on either side so you can run and hack on the whole thing while it's out of the case. Love it! It even looks like it's a simple two layer board so we can drill holes anywhere we can find an opening. I hope the RD-6 is built in the same manner!

- the 5 holes near the MCU looks like a FTDI connector for programming the MCU - the resonance pot looks like the same stereo-potentiometer used in regular TB-303's (oc a newer one and not that old 16mm ones) - the powerswitch got only 3 pins, so it would not be a problem to change it to a whatever-you-like-switch. Just mount the new one somewhere into the case and wire it up (piece of cake ;) - the barrelconnector could be got more strenght if you put some extra solder onto its 3 pins to resist the force while inserting the jack and so will hold a much longer time the first thing i'll modify on my unit when its arrived are the LEDs. They tend to be 0603 SMD LEDs and i think they have to be multicolor all over the board :D thx for the great video, man! :)

That coating on the board is conformal coating. It just helps protect the components from environmental damage. Pretty standard, but it would have been an added expense on such a cheap unit so it's nice to see.

I'm pretty sure the resonance pot is just a different type of potentiometer compared to the others. I'm not really familiar with the internals of synths in general, but usually inverse logarythmic potentiometers are used for resonance controls.

i found the buttons and knobs are stupid cheap in terms of quality. the first one i had the step button broke with in the same month i got it and the knobs by the cutoff became loose and seemed slightly detuned. i was overly careful with it. behringer sent me a new one in exchange for the old one free of charge (which was awesome), sadly a note button on the new one became somewhat unresponsive roughly a few weeks afterward. i miss the old one because i had this pattern that if played at a low speed with certain settings, would produce this awesome, deep, fluctuating drone. i tried reproducing the sound with the new one and am always so close.

That residue you see is similar to solder flux, but it is likely from a "no clean" solder that is normally used in fast, large batch production. The residue is not conductive like a conventional solder flux residue, so it does not need to be cleaned unless clean boards are a priority.

Hi! I just saw your video and am a bit at a loss for info on what to do with mine... Needles to say the unit did not start up and now doesnt show any signs of life... Any idea which components to look at and how to test the thing. I've narrowed down the power supply with the schematics on the board but am a bit stuck now on how to figure out which component is fried. Any help at all would be huge! Thx a lot!!!

Have not seen this on the TD but sometimes it's as simple as this: one of the elements of the power circuit may have melted its own solder joint. And sometimes simply re-soldering its legs will get you up and running. Look in the upper left corner to start, look for black or loose solder joints.

@JH-lo9ut

That is pure evil, if they really glue the knobs in place. I managed to remove my knobs. They were not glued on, but pretty tight. Just note that the knobs have a collar that is countersunk into the plastic surface of the chassis. This makes it so that you tend to push against the collar of the knob itself rather than the chassis when you try to pull them out. Be careful though, I don't want you to break anything. I had to remove the tuning knob, because I got sick of accidental de-tuning while tweaking the knobs.

I have no idea what the value is for that knob. If it's scratchy when it's brand new that's bad. I would email Behringer about it. If you want to replace it, when you de-solder it, it will have a label on the underside with a value or part number and you can replace it that way. Just be sure to measure and match the width and length of the shaft using millimeters.

It’s probably more that they “know a guy” in Shenzhen or maybe their factory neighbors the GD32 foundry so they get em cheap.
