The WASP has an interesting sound, most of the time it has its own sound, but at times it gets near to a Minimoog sound, while still being distinctive. The mid 70s to mid 80s was such an interesting era for synths, I guess a bit like the 50s and 60s for electric guitars. Thankfully Behringer are bringing back some of these eccentric gems, such as the WASP. The originals are very rare here in Australia, in spite of many years scouring ebay and gumtree, I've never seen one for sale here (and I bet it would be VERY expensive if I were to find an original. So I believe Behringer are actually doing a great service by keeping these synths alive in our minds, in our hands and our MUSIC. The originals are still an option, so its all very democratic I believe! For those who argue these are "rip offs" I don't agree. Intellectual rights law cover the patented/copyrighted designs. In regards to 70s and 80s synths, patent and copyright law has already expired. IMAGINE THIS: If the first person to invent the modern acoustic guitar held an indefinate patent on their invention... it would stifle other guitar makers and deprive the public of affordable guitars. The whole idea of patents (I think they expire in about 30 years) is to BALANCE individual or company innovation and the public good. If you are too snobby to use Behringer because of the brand name, ask yourself this: Does your audience even care? Its all about SOUND and CREATIVITY!
@limbicbits

I fully agree on most what you've said. I'd only wish that Behringer would stay away from cloning equipment that is still available (like the Swing, for example). In my opinion it's not necessary, even less considering that Behringer does such a great job with their synths.

I bought this but had to return it, as it would'nt play above middle C. I got a full refund but this must've been a rare factory fault. I agree Behringer went too far with the Swing. No need to clone something still in production. What would've been much better is for Behringer to improve the design (no on/off switch even!). Also, the Keystep Pro is so expensive, why did'nt they "borrow" some ideas from that?!

Hi mate, quality video, I have a few questions, I have produced for some time but I am new to analogue synth's... I am considering buying the Wasp and a drum machine along with the behringer TD-3, but how do I connect them to a DAW? Do I need a hardware mixer to plug them all into? Or say if I just wanted to record the Wasp synth, can I just plug it directly into my soundcard or laptop through USB and record it live. Sorry for the long questions, any help is much appreciated.

Hi mate, the wasp only receive midi through Usb, so for recording you'll need a mixer or an interface .

@@Plaxibo cheers for that mate, I’ve got an audio interface, i’m just unsure how to get audio working, I have ordered a jack to XLR, do I just plug this in the back of the synth, into the audio interface? I know that sounds like a daft thing to ask I just want to be certain of what I’m doing. I’m new to hardware

@@Deleted11100 yes, that should do the trick, though you should use a 1/4" jack into your interface. Most interfaces have a line in input or a "combo input" so you can connect an xlr or an 1/4 jack.

How do you break it to make it sound like the old Whitehouse records?

Haha! You don't need to break it for that - you just need the real thing. This is a nice demo, but it really just proves that it sounds nothing like the real Wasp (I can proudly say that I own an OG).

Just for my understanding that moment at 3:02 asks for an equalisation cut right? I mean it is slightly too high for comfort, please advice me.

In demo videos, I usually avoid using any EQs. You can do whatever you want if it sounds good to you. Or didn't I get the question?

@@limbicbits I am trying to figure out if I get equalisation right,/ if I am using my ears right, would you say that for recording it would be usual to make a cut in the high end at 3:02?

@@robertsteinberger5667 ah! Rather than targetting primarily the high end, I'd aim for some resonance peaks in the mids and upper mids. But cutting out some of the high-end can be beneficial, too. Especially, if you'd like to place it a bit more in the background. Just a workflow recommendation. Your approach is absolutely ok as it has been done that way for decades and is still done that way. But given all the advantages in a DAW I'd always record the signal raw first and add EQ, compression, etc later. Especially when learning (well, you never stop learning but I guess you get what I'm trying to say) this will help you to try different things.

Keystep 32 Midi out --> WASP Midi in. Audio goes straight into a Zoom H4n Field Recorder

Having a K2, I still don't know if the wasp will add something... I'm not sure if the Wasp can do sounds than K2 couldn't.

I found the WASP a bit smoother and the loop able envelope is cool. But then there is something in its sound that I don’t dig. If searching for an alternative I’d rather have a look at Pro1 or Cat. Both are different enough to coexist with a K2

@@limbicbits It's hard for me to say because when I watch demo of synths... people do the same techno / high resonance sounds and all sounds the same.

@@BarbieChaite In this case, you might just want to give it a try. Model D is almost never a bad choice (for all styles of music), although I personally have some kind of a hate love for that Moog sound. First, I always love them - and still do - but as soon as I tried to include a Moog synth into my tracks, I almost always ended up replacing it with an SH-style synth as I find it to fit better. Same with Odyssey or Cat. Both great synths but they have a cutting dominance in the mid tones that I don't like too much.

The envelope can be set into loop mode. Or do you refer to the sequences? In this case, the internal sequencer of the keystep controls the WASP
