The British opening ceremony wasn't pathetic at all. China and Britain had different things to prove and different ideas. China had never held the Olympics before, they needed to wow the world. Britain was bringing new ideas and modernizing the Olympics, for example did you know that the British Olympic stadium, although not beautiful, is completely movable, the entire thing can be moved to a different sight, how amazing is that! Both ceremonies were incredible. #justsaying, I'm chinese btw...

David Beckham is the most overrated athlete there is. He was never close to being a Top 10 midfielder. His WAG and looks made him world famous. You Brits overhype your footballers. Rooney is no Ronaldo. The 7 athletes segment I have no issue with. Your Olympic Opening Ceremony was a poor version of Disney on Ice. If Cruella de Vil and Captain Hook inspired your countrymen, then more power to you. I prefer leaving the inspiration part for the Olympic games.

The opening ceremony in 2008, it was breathtaking, I heard that it was AWESOME, from those who were there and how proud the Chinese were to showcase their culture, people living in Beijing, but not involved with the olympics, were eagerly trying to help the visitors. They saw the pride they had for their country. The commentators on TV were saying to forget about topping this, because it's not a race. It's to showcase your country & culture in your own style, AND that’s what the Brits did.

This is an epic! No matter how many times I watch this clip, my interest remains. The Tang Dynasty should be an era rich in excellent human qualities, both materially and spiritually. The cultural impact on neighboring countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia is unparalleled, whether then or now. No matter where we go, we still call ourselves 唐人 (Tangren), which means "people of the Tang Dynasty". All overseas Chinatowns are known as 唐人街 (Street of Tangren). The legacy of the ancient Tang Dynasty, which lasted for more than a thousand years, is still continuing today.

NBC never covers the Opening Ceremonies the way they should be. Like every corporate media giant running the American media market, NBC edits out the stuff they don't want us to see and fills that time with commercials. That's why I envy those who live near the Canadian border who can receive CBC signals; they can watch a far more decently covered opening ceremony every two years.

Ugh, can we quit arguing over which ceremony was the "best"? It's pointless, repetitive, and often sinks to a war of personal insults. Olympic opening ceremonies are NOT meant to be "compared." They're meant to showcase the best that the host nation has to offer in terms of cultural wealth and should be appreciated as long as they fully satisfied that condition.

They were not my ceremonies. Tinie Tempah did not rap, maybe you don't know what rap is? It was a musical themed event, considering it is Britains greatest export, I don't see why not. I just don't understand why you feel the need to be so harsh, again I put it down to American culture. Perhaps you could explain why? Yes, it's true, Beijing was remarkable. But not every country has the funding for such a show, if they don't do something that hasn't been done before, then it will just look like a poor imitation of previous ceremonies. Its just sad to see such a harshly worded review. Anyway, in the end, it all comes down to how smoothly the actual games go

Calm down, mate. The director Zhangyi mao didn't expect people from other countries to understand particular things. You saw the well dressed women, and you know this is what chinese ancient culture looks like.that's what he expected. There is a documentary film about he and the opening ceremony. He knew that people from other countries would have difficult to understand particular culture stuff, so he simplified many things and put the emphasis on the visual part.

I am sorry, but the closing was horrible!.They could have put on a better show, instead a closing with rock and pop singers for the whole closing. That is totally unexpected. UK has better stuff to show other than a musical show. This is an Olymics closing!

it's the same thing. "thou shall not use graven images". whether it's statues or pictures, it's still a sin based on christianity. i really doubt you seen god. in the old days, i'm pretty sure many people said they saw zeus striking lightning too. just to clarify, im not religious and i dont believe in god. but, i do believe in culture, and the preservation of it, even if it is mythological.

why should you pray to gods that don't exists? really? the same can be said for christianity. i mean, how do you know they don't exist? see, this is what i mean by it being sad. you have your true religion being replaced by a foreign one. christians make statues/pictures for worship too. and guess what, most of christianity you see today are styled based on roman mythology, which in turn is based on greek mythology. isn't that ironic? they just changed some of the names.

Your ceremonies were complete narcissistic English self-absorption. No one has heard of "Only Fools and Horses" let alone knows about their Batman & Robin episode. James Bond. David Beckham. Russel Brand. A borderline racist Eric Idle performance. The Queen of Hearts/Captain Hook/Cruella De Vil? The Spice Girls. Jessie J?! Taio Cruz? Really? I doubt Russia and Brazil will have ceremonies as banal as the bland British ceremonies.

I hated everything about the London opening and closing ceremonies. Sorry. They were only as good as our Super Bowl halftime shows. The London ceremonies were lazy. I doubt Italy would have had pop artists parading around in convertible Ferraris. Having children dressed in tall tees w IMAGINE written on it was lazy. The US easily could have done the same type of ceremony w better artists, but it wasn't supposed to be the Grammys. It was supposed to be something more original.

How am I closed minded if I enjoyed the Beijing ceremonies and Brazilian portion of the London Closing Ceremony? Yours just sucked. Tinie Tempah rapping in a convertible? Lame. Stop acting like you had a sophisticated cultural expression at the Olympic ceremonies because you didn't. You played pop songs mainly from the 80s. If anything your ceremonies showed that GB is obsessed with celebrities. I didn't hear the bagpipes once and thats an iconic instrument used in Scotland which is in GB.

Yes, I have. I'm not Chinese, but I enjoyed Beijing's Opening and & Closing ceremony. Brazil's small segment in the London Closing Ceremony was better than the entire London Closing Ceremony. If the Olympics were in the US and we had Batman, Disney characters, and performances of 80s pop songs I wouldn't defend it. Brits love in a bubble. I loved the Parade of the Nations from the Greek Olympics which had Tiesto DJing during it.

Our slogan for the Olympics is "Inspire a Generation"...that's why there were children heavily involved, and that's why 7 young athletes lit the flame. The children jumping on beds/giant baby was to represent the NHS: the greatest public healthcare system in the world. I don't think you can even begin to compare David Beckham and Kim Kardashian! David is a football legend known throughout the world. The CGI was meant to be 'poorly' done! It was supposed to show how obvious and funny Mr Bean is.
@Saternoc
12 жыл бұрын
Here in the states I understood the relevance of everything shown. I liked Mr. Bean growing up, but the Chariots of Fire video was stupid. The CGI was poorly done. Children jumping on beds? A giant baby? I was just expecting more of an arts & cultural performance, not musicals and pandering to pop icons like David Beckham. We get enough of that in our daily lives. Personally, I would've hated to see Kim Kardashian or The Anchorman be a part of an American Opening Ceremony.

I think it would have been hard to completely understand if you're not British and don't know the British roots. But that's what made it so brilliant. Everyone in Britain was expecting it to be a total letdown, and it really wasn't. It showed just how great our country is. I'll admit the texting and social network part was extremely cringe. But the rest of it was absolutely immense considering we used ordinary members of the public, unlike China who used communism and training like robots.

Olympic games ended around 426 AD when all Greek temples to the old gods were ordered destroyed. The games we know today were a revival attempt by a Frenchmen. Chinese culture has remained constant since the old days. Greek culture changed drastically because of religion with the introduction of Christianity, however in China, many people still have their lives revolve Buddism and Confucianism, something they ancestors where still worshiping when the Greeks had their Pantheon

I think it's hard to match the Beijing olympics cos that olympics was the first Olympics that it has and it's all the Chinese dreams to make that a spectacular one.The London Olympics not bad, especially the first half an hour. But when they show the musical part and the hospital bed rolling in i know this would not be my liking. I can also sense the carefree manner of the British ppl but the Chinese are more excited in putting on a good show. Btw, this is London 3rd time in hosting the game.

Britain's opening ceremony was pathetic. It was boring and uninspiring. I mean c'mon James Bond? Peter Pan? They dedicated their entire opening ceremony to fictional characters. David Beckham on a jet-ski? WOW! BFD... The whole social network/cell phone era act was horrendous. It was worthy of a teen choice awards act, not the Olympic games. this is so random but I have to correct myself. The Olympic stadium can't be entirely deconstructed and moved.
