The fact that everyone expects you to know how to do every type of haircut ever to exist, and perfectly

Oh my gosh no kidding! Or the ones that come in with a picture of a uniquely styled hairdo and say "Can you cut my hair so it does this? But I don't want to have to do any styling to it" Hmmmm nope sorry that's gonna look cray if you don't do something with it!

I ask right off the bat if they know how. If they don't I'd leave. However they all say yes but don't really know how. Just be honest instead of letting me pay you for a hack job on my hair.

One thing the bothers me the MOST, ( I've done hair for 34 yrs) Is mom's crowding your space watching every move my hand makes while I'm cutting their 12 yr olds hair. It's not like they're a baby anymore and it's obvious they're trying to get a lesson lmao!! I usually try to politely ask them to give me enough room to do my job.

You have to develop a Teflon coating, try not to be too sensitive with rude people. It’s hard and it definitely makes you tougher but it’s worth it

I recently graduated from an art program at my college and its been tough finding work. I'm working in retail right now, so I want a change. Im considering going into beauty school and learning cosmetology. Being very artsy, I wouldn't mind learning everything from hairstyling to makeup. But right now Im still undecided. This was a spur of the moment decision and Im still figuring things out atm. This may sound very awkward, but have you ever known any hairstylists, cosmetologists, etc. who not only cut hair but also pursued other areas of interests. One thing I love doing is drawing and pursuing freelance illustration on the side. Does this sound like a practical decision? Sorry if I sound confusing.

jacksparrowguy I honestly went into cosmetology because I wanted to go to art school but knew I probably wouldn't be able to find a job in that field, doing hair and makeup is very much so an art form so I'm sure you'd enjoy it! I can't say I know a lot of hairstylists that do other things but I don't see why you couldn't :)

You have no sick days, vacation days or pto. (I have been doing hair for 15 years) Your clients will expect you to be there, all the time and if you do get sick or worse end up in the hospital then they expect you to work sick or will leave to go somewhere else. Overall, you do not want clients like this, bit it can be very frustrating. HAIRSLIVERS! Little pieces of hair that get into your skin! They hurt!!!

The fact that no one really offers health insurance, and if they do its expensive and crappy. And that you are expected to work every weekend and evening shifts! Try juggling family life around that!

Do you feel you need to have a great passion for this to do it? There is a top hair salon in the uk in London looking for an apprentice. And i think it would be amazing. I didn't picture doing hair but my art teacher said I'm good making things I'm creative good with my hands rather than drawing... (lol was a little sad that day) and when I was very little this was my dream. I'm not sure!! I mean I've always done my hair because it's so expensive and it always ends up good so maybeeeee haha

Moonlightlau Well I started out just because I liked doing hair, and I wanted to go to art school but knew realistically there aren't many jobs for artists. I wouldn't say I was passionate about it at first, but once I started to see myself getting better and making people feel good about themselves my passion for it definitely grew! It depends on the person though I suppose, sometimes you just have to try it to find out!

Hey! Yep I went from graduating beauty school to taking my license tests the day after graduating, then started at a super busy salon the day after my tests. It's all a blur now haha but it definitely gave me the experience and practice I needed to get good right out of the gate!

how would rate the health aspect of it? like the chemicals in dyes or carpal tunnel
@ashenlife

A sweet and pure mochi I don't really think I've been doing it long enough to rate it exactly, I wasn't sensitive to any of the hair chemicals but being around the nail stuff like acetone would make me feel sick. So when I went to a salon after school that didn't do nails I was totally fine, as long as I didn't accidentally inhale clippercide! Haha but that's definitely worth looking into if you're sensitive to chemicals, I've never heard of anyone being affected by them long-term though! And yeah I know a ton of older stylists that have carpal tunnel because of doing this, but I mean it is a common condition for anyone that uses their hands a lot! I'd say the hardest thing is constantly being on your feet and the back pain that comes with bending and twisting and turning all day while cutting hair, so a good floor mat and a barber chair that can go up pretty high is so necessary!

This is why I keep masks in my station. If they won't wear one, then I do.
