He's simply going against the wisdom of generations of his forefathers who survived and thrived on almost a meat and dairy desert in the harsh Arabian desert. Nobody must have heard of salads and smoothies in his region until about 2 generations ago! Hope he maintain his health as much as they did, on this diet. It is the "degree of compassion" that varies in a vegan diet. Many animals, birds and bees are killed, their habitats destroyed to cultivate fruits & veggies.

@@LightCreedHe knows more about his culture than you do,and people who lived in the deserts years ago did not eat meat a lot, instead as he said relied on plant based protein .Most doctors will tell you,and scientific research shows a plant based diet is much more healthy and prevents diseases, meat is eaten out of greed and not at all necessary to maintain good health,so stop with your brainwashing nonsense.Meat is an unsustainable way of life which is destroying this planet, and this young man,is doing the right thing. So you worry about your health, and let him live his life according to his choice. You talk about birds and animals getting killed because of the production of crops, that in no where compared to the systemic brutality and abuse animals killed for meat endure,so you can eat a dead corpse..

Half-Palestinian here and vegan for more than 10 years. Warms my heart to see vegan Arabs. If I could only change one thing in my life, it would be to convince my past self to go vegan earlier. It would have saved so many lives! Animals should have the same rights as people. Seeing animals as something less than human is just another form of discrimination, just like racism. Also, veganism helps a lot in the fight against climate change and it's soooo good for your health.

5:22 I'm glad he addressed the animal aspect of veganism. While being vegan for health or sustainability is commendable, the true meaning of veganism should not be overlooked. Veganism is not just a diet; it is an ethical imperative against the commodification and exploitation of animals. Health and environmental benefits are secondary to this core value. People who abandon a plant-based diet often do so because they feel they might be missing something nutritionally, overlooking the fact that animals desire to live as much as they do. Many are not well-informed about thriving on a vegan diet. The American and British Dietetic Associations have stated that a well-planned vegan diet is healthy and appropriate for all individuals at all stages of life.

I totally agree. We are meant to eat foods that contain life force energy not tortured and abused slaughtered animals. If we create death and destruction then consume death and destruction then we become that inside and out. Only a small percentage of mammals eat other animals, the rest are herbivores. Wild herbivores eat food that contains life force energy. Sadly all the animals trapped in the animal agriculture industry rarely eat live food like fresh grass or grain. They are robbed of everything. It's sinister.

I think as Arabs this is an incredibly important aspect to shed light on. I read so many studies looking at animal welfare all around the world, but not nearly as much robust studies from here. I think it's something we really ought to look at, because I imagine most people would agree with the importance of not causing these animals harm. I think it's more important than the health aspect too: not everyone wants to be super healthy, we're happy living with comrpomises. But I think everyone has that moral core that we can connect to, so long as we do it without judgement and with understanding for the fact that nobody is a bad person. We're all trying to do our best to the best of our abilities and knowledge. It took me months to really get comfortable with fully cutting out all animal products in my life, and even then it was a very slow process. I really hope this idea spreads more in our Arab world.

I am not vegan, I'm flexitarian, but I respect vegans. I agree with your comment. My family is from Morocco. Traditionally we only used to eat meat once a few months, at special occasions, or if the weather caused crops to diminish dramatically. We have an enormous amount of cultural vegetarian dishes like beans, lentils, chick peas, eggplants, split peas... Unfortunately Moroccons, like most people in the developing world, try to follow the Western diet. We eat way too much meat nowadays. We should go back to our traditional way of eating ❤

My favorite quote from this is "Being mainly plant based is actually something that comes from within our heritage and our culture, and its not something that's coming from abroad." I feel like this is the case with most traditional foods from our recent history - it is heavily plant based, locally and seasonally sourced and incredibly tasty, and we've been eating that way for a very long time.

Yes, the so-called ‘culture’ of eating meat and dairy is a relatively recent phenomenon in most countries (excluding the aristocracy who could afford it) but people don’t actually understand or appreciate their own cultures and how influential industrialised animal farming has become in the past 50 or so years. So much so that people the world over are now convinced that culturally they are primarily meat and dairy eaters which is a lie.

Thank You. In the very distant past an Arab - Abu al-'Ala' was born in December 973 and wrote this poem later in life: Do not unjustly eat fish the water has given up, and do not desire as food the flesh of slaughtered animals, Or the white milk of mothers who intended its pure draught for their young, not for noble ladies. And do not grieve the unsuspecting birds by taking their eggs; for injustice is the worst of crimes. And spare the honey which the bees get industriously from the flowers of fragrant plants; For they did not store it that it might belong to others, nor did they gather it for bounty and gifts. I washed my hands of all this; and wish that I had perceived my way before my hair went gray!

Absolutely fantastic to hear. In the Arabian Peninsula veganism is going to be extremely important, as any hope of recovering vegetative cover that might start biotically pumping in rain will require the absence of grazing animals, and even trying to engage in intensive agriculture is extremely detrimental to the environment there, not to mention horrific ethically speaking.
