I so strongly appreciate the unsure/don't know button in this quiz! Twitter has definitely made me personally feel like I need to have an opinion on everything even though it would be impossible for me to be well informed about *gestures broadly* everything! It also makes me feel defeated at times (apathetic maybe?) as it feels like there is too much to learn and I will never manage it. For me personally I think this is quite a dangerous, inactive mindset. Anyway TLDR great video as usual, 10/10 would nuance again.

After reading this comment I'm also doing the German test and I thought the wording would be slightly different but sometimes it definitely changes the meaning of the question quite significantly. For example, in the German test the word "asimilate" is changed to the word "integrate" which I am much more on board with and they specify the "group" that Leena was unsure about to be your "political group".

As someone who does not have English as their first language, I sometimes found it hard to keep up when the questions disappeared so quickly. I realise this kind of video isn't something you do very often, and that it would be very time consuming, but I just kept thinking "I wish she would've added the question to the parts where she's discussing it". I loved you pointing out the grey areas with some of those questions that kept you from strongly agreeing/disagreeing. It made me wonder about what it means when I strongly agree/disagree - am I ignoring the grey? Am I informed enough about the grey to be sure of my understanding? Are there questions that have “obvious answers” for me that for others they see too much grey area in? I’d love to see the overall results from all quiz takers - are there questions that almost always result in STRONG opinions (either or both directions) vs neutral or softer opinions? Are there certain questions that skew hugely in one direction? My braaaaain.

Hello Leena, your comments on democracy made me think. I still go to school and my school values democracy a lot teaching students about democracy and getting students involved in democracy, a lot of us are allowed (and enouraged!!) to parttake in decision making processes in the school. But, like you said, it's not just that. We have projects where we get to work and play with students that are not from our age groups, like an exchange, our school makes time and space for that and we learn a lot from it, make friends we wouldnt usually make. I think democracy is not just decision making, it's also making space and time, so we can have discussions and conversations without being rushed to form opinions, so we can learn from each other. (My school is quite the utopian school I think and I know that i am very lucky to go there but I just thought I'd share here, because I think that we need to teach people about how democracy works and how they matter and work within it from a younger age than we do)

YES I loved this so much, and I think we should make your "I don't know enough about this subject" jingle the backdrop to SO MANY MORE discussions. Libertarian socialist here but does anyone else feel suuuuper conflicted/confused about the term "libertarian"? The thing is, covid-19 and the anti-vax anti-lockdown squad makes me quite aware that the label 'libertarian' is probably shared by a lot of people I strongly disagree with and there are plenty of areas where I think the state should step in and act, and libertarianism can be associated with individualism, which is not what I want even though I also don't want surveillance or forced groupings... the problem is maybe that in these questions my mistrust of government and suspicions about corruption in our current society means I probably answer more towards the liberal side of the spectrum than I might if our power structures were more just. But then again, I also do really believe in decentralised, devolved power structures which is the opposite of authoritarianism in a yet another way... Argh, so confusing!
@saamv8139

Hey, Libertarian Socialist results here too, just wanna give some background on the term "libertarian", The modern US libertarian does NOT follow the actual philosophy of Libertarianism, but Objectivism. Objectivism is the name for the philosophy of Ayn Ran, who couldn't call her horrible philosophy libertarianism as the name was taken, but her followers call themselves libertarian because that label was free for taking in US back then and they are appropriating progressive trappings and pretending full laissez-faire capitalism causes liberty. Libertarian Socialism is pretty much the arch enemy of US Libertarians and they want that confusion( gives em power as they are in power), also gives the backround kinda for the whole Anarcho-Capitalists are not Anarchists thing you might have seen around. Wiki articles references: "Libertarianism", "Libertarianism_in_the_United_States", "Objectivism"

As a tentative libertarian socialist/anarchist, I really understand this worry. But libertarian socialism =/= individualism! It's different from American right-wing libertarianism (but another commenter already explained that). After some reflection I think horizontal, organising structures would be just as capable of handling a pandemic as our current system. Maybe we'd even see less conspiracy thinking start to happen, because mask-wearing and distancing etc aren't imposed from above but decided by a community vote and professional medical recommendations. Gets people more involved, maybe, so they don't feel like powerless pawns in some conspiracy by Bill Gates or whoever is the boogeyman of the day. This is just speculation, though, obviously. I have a lot more learning to do about libertarian socialism!

An observation: It seems that we agree on a lot of things but still in cases where you choose a different answer from mine, I already notice a strange feeling of "unease" in myself. Maybe because opinions are so personal and it feels like I'm attacked/threatened? Maybe because I'm afraid I have been wrong and stupid? Maybe because I'm just such a conflict-avoiding person?

I'm definitely the same - ego and opinions are so closely knitted together, my gut reaction is often similar. Glad you enjoyed the video anyways x

I design surveys, and I always give people an 11-point scale (it's called a Likert scale). That way you get nuanced information, but you also have a mid point for the 'I don't know/don't have an opinion". The reason surveys don't have this option is to get better statistical results, in my opinion.

1. Leena your fringe is looking WONDERFUL, and 2. Thank you for making this! It's a really brave and vulnerable thing to do to invite us in like this, there's often so much emphasis on 'winning' a debate when these topics get talked about, I know I'm terrible when it comes to wanting to be heard vs doing active listening and being curious, I keep thinking about a quote Brene Brown says all the time which is 'I'm here to get it right, not to be right', which has been helping me a lot with my anxiety over getting things wrong, we don't want to be perfect, we want to learn (ESPECIALLY when it comes to politics and how we look after people!) So, thank you for your thoughtfulness, this was a really great video, and I hope you're currently enjoying your day! :)

It seems to be a classic piece of advice when making surveys or polls in any sort of scientific context to not have a neutral option in the middle to avoid having a huge proportion of neutral answers that you can't do much with analysis wise. I really appreciated the conversation about changing one's opinion, growing and also I loved seeing the way you reflected on the questions. Sometimes I would have given the questions my personal meaning instead of fully taking the time to think about the terms and the phrasing, so even by watching you reply, I learned a lot. Thank you so much. Right now I feel at loss. Sometimes when I formulate my opinions, I find them quite empty and struggle with the ability to back them up. This video was very helpful. It made me take some time to question my thought process and also made me realise how in the past I have been quick to dismiss different opinions because I felt strongly about my own. It's hard to take a step back and listen. It's also hard to state facts in their correct context. I will definitely be writing down the books you shared with us in the ending of this video and slowly purchasing them and educating myself on knowledge and opinions. I like to think, as Socrates said, that I know that I don't know. The more I grow, the more I realise it. Thank you so much for the video and for creating a moment of much needed self reflection.

Hey Leena, I really liked the idea of this video, I just wanted to throw out there that for some people of colour, having more formed and consistent political values, was also a reality of trying to survive and resist colonial and inter-cultural violence. Political placing can be a form of protectionism and a tool for resisting oppression. I know that wasn't true for some of my other People of colour pals, but it was definetly true for me. Of course, I have changed my opinions on lots of things, but I don't think discounting people with longer held political stances is necessarily correct because as I said many of us who have always sat on the progressive end have been here because it was the only place our rights and values survived. It is valuable to think intersectionally when talking about politics, some of us don't feel we can align with certain ideologies particularly when our wellbeing or values were under attack by those movements.
@leenanorms
3 жыл бұрын
Yes it totally depends on the long held belief - there are big stances that people hold for their whole lives like 'all people deserve respect and dignity' but then I'd still be surprised to meet anyone who hasn't changed their opinion on how that should be approached or executed, even in a small way. Totally agree and respect what you've said, on the big big stuff there's no middle road and ive probably always held the same core-core values because they're the only values that treat people like people, women as people, POC as people etc etc. One of the big reasons I walked away from christianity is that for me the Bible doesn't treat women as people, a deal breaker obvs. Once again, no sweeping statement holds up to nuance, that was too much of a sweeping statement from me! 🧡

This video has surpassed my (already quite high) expectations in so many ways! Although some of your opinions are quite different to mine, your ability to articulate your thoughts and question some beliefs (including yours) always makes me a bit more hopeful about all of this we're going through as humans living on this planet. For me, the thing that has helped me to search for common ground with people with different opinions was political simulations (basically a student summit where a group of young people pretend to be UN/EU/NATO delegates representing all member countries and discuss topics from deforestation to arms trade for a week). Representing an opinion you don't necessarily agree with and researching all the facts and reasons that support it has been truly life changing for me and is something I believe more people should try.

In my job, when I arrive to a new site I am often seen as chief-day-ruiner before I even open my mouth. I have to do a lot of convincing that I am there to help and that ultimately everyone is on the same team. I find tactics like positional bargaining (my stance is right and you are wrong) are very, very impotent. It is much better to ‘work hard on the problem, soft on the people’ as in principled negotiation. Empathy for your counter-party and making sure everyone feels heard and understood, goes a long way. ‘Getting to Yes’ by Fisher and Ury is a great and accessible intro to these concepts.

As a grad student in political theory I so appreciate your open and conscientious approach to political discourse. My area of research is centered in critiques of modernist science (mechanistic science) and would love to crack open that question regarding science and technology as I think the origins/history of modern science tend to be little known yet we are all taught to embrace and see the world through a scientific lense. You seem to have thought closely on the issue! But I thought I'd recommend the works of Carolyn Merchant, Beth Bee, and Linda Tuihiwa Smith, all of whom write about the history of science (wrapped up in scripture, the witch hunts, and feminine suppression) techno solutions to climate change (which often act in the capacity of green washing while still reinforcing violent engagement with the environment) and indigenous science. I think western science is one of those subjects we never question or think critically about soo just putting it out there! Thanks for a great video.

So here are my results: 78.8% Equality which makes me a socialist 83.3% World which makes me an internationalist 68% Liberty therefore liberal Last but not least 77.6% Progress- very pregressive. My closest match is Libetarian Socialism and I can strongly agree:D

I just took it and got Libertarian Socialism. I'm going to watch this back to write down some choice phrases you dropped in this video to keep in my back pocket for myself and for conversations with other people, like "it's not shameful to not know things" (!!!!) 21-year-old Katy would also have had very strong, albeit ill-informed, opinions about religion and abortion, but 33-year-old Katy keeps sliding to the left with each passing year. I wish we could have a drink and a chat so bad!

Such a good video! I found the question about whether or not “family values” were important one of the more strangely worded. I almost felt bad feeling like I maybe disagreed with something so seemingly innocuous on the face of it. Because if they are talking about family values such as respecting elders, kindness etc that’s great right? But from my point of view it could also be seen to be referring to the way that religious fundamentalists or right wing people interpret that (“family values” are often used to justify things such as homophobia and transphobia). For example Ben Shapiro and I would have a very different definition of what constitutes family values is what I mean. It’s so interesting to me that such a seeming simple question has so much political background to it

This is a great video and it gave me a lot of food for thought. I'm often stuck between 'how do we have productive conversations?' and 'i don't want to interact with people who hold beliefs that harm me and my communities personally or systemically, particularly when those that do the harm are not often encouraged to have introspection.' I've been thinking about it a lot, because I feel the same - I do want less division, but not at the expense of those who are more systemically oppressed's rights or even just wellbeing, if any of that makes sense? But how do we implement lasting change otherwise? Anyway, great video as always Leena!

Just took the test, I'm in "Libertarian socialism" Edit : as you mentionned, so glad there is an "unsure" button, English is not my native language so when not understanding the deep meaning of the questions ( or when I genuinely had no clear opinion on the subject) I could click on it ! Edit 2 : after listening to you I definitely did not understand 3 questions or so. So I'm probably more on the left and towards liberty than the test suggested.

YES: Measuring a countries 'wealth' based off GHP rather than GDP (if my memory serves me right, the proper term was GNH? Gross National Happiness) - I remember first stumbling on that happiness index first back in 2015, when I deep dove into the suicide rates of various countries... & Was really drawn to this when I learnt about the term... Bhutan was particularly fascinating looking into... For anyone else interested in that stuff, highly recommend looking more into *GNH* (& the 'World Happiness Report')... & Also places like Bhutan (various countries with a large Buddhist population are often interesting reads - Burma/Myanmar & Tibet fascinate me).... Along with obviously Scandinavian countries like Denmark (but I don't think that's a surprise to anyone, even those less political/research savvy, since 'Hygge' became such a buzz word), we need more car-free spaces :-p Anyway I can feel myself starting to waffle... Just wanted to comment that in case you wanted to know the term for that train of thought you dipped into lovely Miss Norms 🌈 Gosh I hope my memory served me right though haha, its been a while :-p

I think this was a really get video. I will do the test but not now as it's 70 questions and I'm in my lunch break. I do agree with including some of these questions on dating apps because your girl 👏does 👏not👏 want👏 to👏 waste 👏her👏 time👏 on👏 a 👏tory! A temperature check I do, is ask people how they voted in Breshit? You're political views do not have to align directly with mine, but I don't want them to be the polar opposite 😂

Do you rule out anyone who voted Brexit? I think I might do something similar, but rather than asking them how they voted (or would have voted, seeing as many of us weren't old enough to vote in 2016), I would ask their reasons for voting. Because from experience and chatting to various people, to my surprise I found myself aligning much more closely to some people who voted for Brexit than I thought I would. Brexit is just one part of a person's political view, so its important to explore why they voted for what they did, and also find out some other aspects of their political world view. Or I might just avoid Brexit and try and find a different question to ask them haha.

When I said I aligned with those who voted for Brexit, I mean that having talked to many Northern voters from depressed neighbourhoods that have declined over the past 50 years, many of them share a similar working-class focussed world view, and simply feel like they have been neglected by Thatcherism and then globalist Blairism that has dominated British politics. And in that case, I could understand and get along with them. However, obviously there are many other Leave voters I most definitely would not agree with haha.

@@joshuageraldbutler8037 hey, yep I understand what you're saying. I think you're right discussing the reasoning behind voting is very important to understand someone's perspective. I'm born and bred in South Wales so I get it 😊 if I'm on a date with someone it would be something I would discuss further. But if I'm on the apps trying to decide if I should invest time in someone it's a quick way to get a temperature check. Also as the vlog brothers say "we need to think of each other more complexly" and of course there are nuances that need to be understood. I should preface this by saying I'm very bad at dating 😂 so maybe I should drop the question all together? Also it pains me that you weren't old enough to vote in 2016 (just reminds me that not everyone is late 20s like myself) and if it's not too bold of me to say the fact that you're watching Leena videos means you're on a good path 😊

I just took the test, and despite hardly understanding half the terminology (english is hard as a second language), with the help of googling words I concluded that these results mean not much to me. Still, strongly agree with importance of talking about topics with people you don't fully agree with. You raised some good questions with this commentary!

Hey Leena! Can I recommend the podcast “Better Off Dead” as a resource for info on voluntary assisted dying? The first season of the podcast was made a while ago, but laws have recently been changed in some parts of Australia and now they’re releasing a second season. It definitely has a distinct bias, but they interview people on various sides of the argument, and it is made by a well-respected literary institution. Perhaps it will rehash some of the same stuff you already know, but I found it really enlightening!

It is an important distinction that there is a difference between having moral beliefs whether or not arising from a religious faith, and wanting to use the state to impose them on people whether they believe in that or not. On a vaguely related topic, we are in the weird situation of the government legally imposing monogamy on the people. I'm not sure when adultery was last actually illegal according to law of the land, and people have been forced to choose between whoever they were with in March 2020 and celibacy! Legally no-one can have a one-night stand without both parties disconnecting from their support bubbles for two weeks before and after, and many adults would have to fob off their parents about the actual reason for this!

So I did the quiz along side you and yeah, I do like this much better than the political compass quiz, 'cause on the compass quiz a lot of questions just had me "???" or "uhh this is too much of a generalization for me to have an opinion on." Also I'm like, very young, and from South East Asia, so I don't necessary know a lot yet to have firm opinions on big and nuanced topics like these. That's all to say I appreciated the "Unsure" button. My result was pretty close to yours tho, but for mine it said Libertarian Socialism instead. Which I don't really know what to do with that information now. I try to see these on the same line as those personality quizzes - fun, a good place to start asking questions, but ultimately doesn't have to be a hard box into which to stuff myself. Also re: Tinder, same. That's why I like OkCupid more, 'cause they have a lot of these quizzes for you to do, and some of them are political.

Thank you for sharing this resource Leena. I think it is a great conversation starter. I found my results to be fairly accurate to how I would describe my values (very socialist with an internationalist lens) but I find the questions lack context. Like yes, technological advancements are great when they are helping cure disease, mitigate climate crisis etc but not when untaxed billionaires want to yeet themselves into space

If you want to learn more about genetic modification I think it will be valuable for you to look into two aspects of it. One is the scientific benefits found in improving foods. This include making rice more nutritious, reducing waste by making ripe fruit and veg hard, make plants less influenced by climate change etc. The biologial risk is that the modified organisms can spread in the wild, but with regulations it should be solvable (most domesticated plants need active human help to spread). The other is the capitalism of it. That large companies own the rights to the products. This aspect is very much a product of how agriculture policy and regulation works in the world. It needs to be changed too, but agriculture is so connected with culture, history, demographics and nationality, that it is super hard to change.
