Lilly, I don't know if you have these items in Austrian Amazon webservice, but look up Augason Farms there. The have a wide range of shelf stable, survival foods, usually in #10 cans, so it's also good for families. Also, since the situation in the Ukraine is getting worse, you should stock up on Propane and gasoline products. Make sure to treat any liquid fuels with stabilizers/anti algae for long term (2 year) storage. I'm sure you know all of this already, but I am concerned. Also, back in 2004? I think? when Katrina came through, we had the govt. declare a state of emergency, and the Army Reserve showed up with relief supplies like blankets and water and MREs, and at that time they didn't really check on how many boxes of MREs you asked for, they just gave them, (I think there was a rule about showing up only 1 time a day) but the actual meals they gave you were unlimited. Perhaps such a situation exists somewhere in your country?

Lilly, I worked in major grocery retailers for 24 years mostly in Produce but also Meat and Dairy. The expiration date on the cans and boxes is meant to be a "sell by date" rather than that the food is no longer edible. This date ensures that the retailer has sold the product to the customer while the product still has a good shelf life. You will find that most products, use your discretion here, are just fine 6 months to a year or even 2 years after the stamped expiration date. I hope this helps you. 😊

In a home bunker. You should have seeds and plant them every week in a 20 litre bucket. That way you will have a constant supply 5 buckets per person. If you plant something it will take 120 to 180 days before plants produce a crop so start early. Buy a case save 20% at many places. And eat from your stash and use it as a stop gap.

Hi Lilly. Some helpful math: 1. Determine the power requirement for your device. It's usually listed on your device. You want to know how many Watts. If your device only lists Amps, then calculate the Watts like this: Amps x Volts = Watts. 2. Determine how long you plan to use each device. How many hours per day do you expect to use the device? Multiply the number of Watts by the number of Hours per day. This equals the Watt-Hours for that device per day. H x W = W-H per day. 3. Use an appropriately sized solar generator. 4. Keep in mind 2 things: First, your freezer does not run continuously. Freezers and fridges cycle. Check the freezer's label to see how much energy it uses in a year. Divide that number by 365 to determine the average daily energy use. Second, be aware that running wattage is one thing, surge (or peak) wattage is something else (surge can be 2 to 4 times the wattage of running). So when determining the size of the solar generator you need, allow a margin of 30%. 5. These portable solar generators, when used in the home, are only meant to power the appliance for maybe 4 to 24 hrs. For more than that, the generator would need to be continually connected to appropriately sized solar panels (more math). I'm not an electrician, nor experienced in any sense of the word. You are a very smart person who minds her details. I am certain you can find online the information you need to find the right size solar generator for your needs. The information I found recommends a generator of between 1,000 and 2,000 watts for an average freezer in the US. Because I'm inexperienced, the whole thing gives me a headache. But I believe in solar power, and I wish everyone could live "off-grid".

When it comes to vegetable sprouts are never talked about. Broccoli sprouts have 17 to 30 times the nutrient density as leaf vegetables. They take 3 or 4 days to grow and 15 dollars would keep you in sprouts for months. Get a sprout tray kit. What they charge 6 dollars for you can have for pennies.
@james0000

Yup! Sprouts are tasty and nutritious. The only downsides are that they use up seeds without making more and you do have to be careful about mold. You can always convert some sprouts to grow more and let them bolt though to solve the seed issue to some degree. I have been pro-sprouts for a long time now.

Was just about to suggest sprouts as an adjunct to canned veggies. Great to have some dry lentils, sunflower seed and other staples that one can otherwise eat -but still sprout. Some sprouting jars/trays are not much investment. A cheap jar of citric acid is great for making years worth of washing solution for those sprouts to keep them fresh and sanitary and is additionally useful as a food flavoring.

For those not sure what an autoclave is, normally the term is used for the machine that sterilizes medical equipment, but in this case, it means pressure cooker or pressure canner, which can be used to make safely canned foods (botulism spores die at 240F, but water only boils at 212F at sea level, lower temps higher in elevation, so you need pressure to increase the boiling point of water to kill the really really bad stuff that can kill you with improper canning methods. This is very useful for preserving non-highly-acidic foods, though if they're highly acidic (like most fruit, though not all), you can simply water-bath (boil them to 212F) to seal the jars against further air contamination, as highly acidic environments kill botulism spores. Foods that are frozen are often safe from such things because the cold completely wrecks the spores' ability to reproduce (as opposed to the temperatures canned or jarred foods experience). For freezing vegetables, however, it is often best to blanch (quickly boil for a short period of time, then quench the heat rapidly in very cold water) before freezing, as this prevents the natural enzymes from acting that would otherwise break down the tissues around them in various foods--if you've ever chucked some homegrown veggies in the freezer, then pulled them out later to cook, only to find the texture has gone mushy and unappetizing, that's those naturally present enzymes at work. Blanching destroys those enzymes with the boiling, and then the ice cold water prevents the food from cooking any farther...because every time you heat up the food once it's been cooked, it will lose texture & nutrition simply from being over-cooked. You can still freeze fresh-picked vegetables, just remember to eat it up quickly in your food rotation, compared to blanched foods. Blanching isn't usually necessary for animal-based proteins prior to freezing them, as they contains different sorts of enzymes than the kinds found in plant-based foods. Vacuum sealing is recommended for both kinds of food when freezing, however, because that reduces the rate of freezerburn. As always, do your own research! Thankfully, a large number of universities and state / provincial / government agricultural departments have resources online for folks to learn proper canning, pickling, freezing, dehydrating, and other food-preservation methods, with various safety standards and tips for people to follow.

More proteins! Several factors seem to be coming into play to be limiting proteins in stores. Consider adding canned meats in particular to your preps. In your area an EMP or blackout is a little higher than other SHTF options. So your frozen proteins will have to be eaten or further preserved.

I have been growing sprouts for several years now. They are great and are sometimes OK for people with various gut issues to eat, who can't otherwise eat things like leafy greens. I don't generally rinse mine, but I do make sure not to grow them so dense they don't have airflow. If you are talking about the watering rinse (like for growing them in jars) then you could just drink what your pour out or otherwise re-use that water.

another thing about the gas mask, if a building or something in the area gets knocked down there's going to be a massive amount of dust in the air. a lot of people got sick from the air in NYC around 9/11. that could happen from all kinds of stuff that isn't even a SHTF scenario. anything from an earthquake, to somebody left the stove on in the building next door and now there's a bunch of toxic smoke all over the place.

Indeed. Some 15 years ago, I lived in a skyscraper on 17th floor and we had fire in apartment on 13th floor. Fire spread to 14th and 15th floor too. Hallway was full of black smoke, but since my apartment was closest to emergency exit stairways I thought that I would be able to keep my breath and run down the stairs below 13th floor. Well - NOT. The smoke was actually so aggressive that I barely managed to run over to the neighbour diagonally from my apartment. There we could breathe on the balcony as wind was carrying the smoke away from their apartment and my apartment was directly on the wind path so it was full of smoke despite my effort to isolate doors and windows with wet sheets.

The reason why vegetables are so important is that they provide a lot of the micronutrients we need to be healthy. We cannot live on carbs, proteins, & fats alone. We need vitamins, minerals, & dietary fiber (helps keep you regular in the bathroom), as well as electrolytes, probiotics (often found on fresh veggies, or in pickled foods such as onions, cabbage/sauerkraut, carrots, beets, etc), and so forth.

Appreciate the preppers content. Covid really taught me how much we take food supplies for granted. When supply lines become interrupted, it doesn't take long at all for local supermarkets to run out of essentials. I've been slowly trying to create a surplus of necessities, but I'm starting to catch myself thinking I always need more... I've very recently discovered there is a fine line between prepping and hoarding and I'm actively being mindful to not hoard supplies but just keep a healthy surplus in case of emergency.

Could you create root cellar conditions in a garage or shed so you can keep carrots, onions and cabbages. Once opened, your sauer kraut will last a really long time because it is fermented. You can ferment a wide variety of vegetables using very simple jars and ingredients without refrigeration. One thing that I've been doing lately, especially with the turn that the world's taken, is to spend an extra $15-$20 at Dollar Tree. Even though their prices have gone up to $1.25 per item from $1, that still lets me get certain things. What I look for are foods with a long (preferably 6- to 12-month or longer) shelf life and which come in boxes with 4-6 individually-packaged items. Anything from breakfast bars and toaster pastries to fruit gummies to cases of ramen noodles to drink mixes to packages of cup-a-soup. Spending only those few extra bucks a payday lets me put together my very own 'survival rations': into a 1-gallon Ziploc bag, I put a 'drink package' that contains a Nestle Taster's Choice instant coffee, a lemonade or pink lemonade drink mix (typically meant to be added to a bottle of water), a package of instant hot chocolate or apple cider mix, a cup-a-soup package (either chicken and noodle or vegetable), and 3 teabags. Total price for 6 drink packages: $6.25. Then into the bag goes: instant oatmeal, toaster pastry, or breakfast bar; fruit gummies (especially ones for kids, as they are usually fortified with extra vitamins); a small individual bag of pretzels (Snyder's FTW); a moon pie (definitely need those morale boosters!), a can of Vienna sausages, a package of instant ramen noodles, a package of crackers and cheese, and a Capri Sun. Total price for the rest of the items: about $8-10. The things I pick are chosen for their caloric values (the Moon Pies and ramen noodles), protein (the Vienna sausages), and well as vitamins and minerals (the gummies, apple cider, and other drink mixes). Depending on what exactly goes into each package, they will typically provide between 1200-1400 calories, as well as well over 100% of the daily recommended values for Vitamins C, several of the Bs, Niacin, Potassium, and others. These are in addition to the extra cans of veggies I buy (I typically buy 1 'extra' can of something for every 2 I figure I'm going to use), rice, dried beans and barley, and so on.

Tomato based foods have a high acid level so you shouldn't push the expiration dates on their cans, like you can other foods. Buy glass containers when you can... Glad that you have stepped up your prepping level these days!

The takeaway from this video is we need to constantly access our supplies and realistically calculate our consumption. For me, I have packed our freezers with frozen meat and veg so I wanted to see how long a freezer would last. Two weeks, I thought it would be longer but I did take the opportunity to rotate stock. I'm not a nervous Nelly by nature but having supplies in the bunker is a good feeling, as well as being debt free and money in the bank. Great video Lilly.

Testing your storage is good letting you learn the weakness in your preps. Should have a clipboard listing what you have, so it's easy to see the expiry date and what your low on. Also going to the low cost stores and getting canned fruits and veg. Just be sure to rotate and use the items that you have. Do you have dried/or long lasting milk? also if you have a old blanket cut it slightly larger than the door opening of your freezer and put it on top of your food.then close the door it'll help keep the cold if the door seals don't work.

3:15 I was buying this big cans also first, but now I switched to the little ones. They are a little bit more expensive, but you will thank yourself later, when not pushed to eat one thing a few days in a row.

This is something people don't understand...What are you going to do with that huge quantity of food once you open the can? I buy 12 or 15oz cans of food. Often by the flat, but yes then the food can be opened incrementally...also if a can goes bad, it's just one small can.

Idk if you have a freezer?? You can freeze sauerkraut till you want to eat it if you have to open a big can. Same with beans . Glad you are doing well. Striving for 90days here at home for the food stores and water.

Marking the date enables easier rotation too so you won't have things spoiled; you can use oldest first. Smart.

I’ve worked in the food retail industry half my life with both fresh and frozen foods and in the UK the government insists on different food types such as fresh, canned, jars, frozen veg, frozen meat, poultry and fish being given a ‘blanket’ wide best before date. To impartially check how long each brand lasts is simply impractical so a generic date is set. I worked for years for a frozen potato products company and they used to re-bag and re-date their freezer stock if they failed to sell by the best before date effectively doubling the claimed storage life.

Quick note; I hope you take the time to rotate your food in your freezer. Most people tend to stack their new groceries on top of the old and by the time they dig up what's at the bottom, it's freezer burnt and ruined.

A freezer can be powered by batteries, inverter, and a solar panel. Or use it to stock than dehydrate the meat in slice or mince. the protein shredded will work just as well. Try turning the freezer to low to see if you he power pack will hold a 45°f temperature.

Keep up a backup pressure cooker that you can heat with wood or put on a gas burner. Don't count on keeping electric. Even if you have a generator it will stop as soon as you run out of fuel. Fuel will not last long.

That is awesome I'm glad that you added some more to your pantry. Keep in mind Lily you're trying to have a goal of six weeks but you also mentioned a few videos ago that if a serious shtf War to occur in your area you would also be very open to helping your neighbors and family. So another words make sure you have six months worth for you and your husband but on top of that if you plan on sharing with your neighbors and family you might want to consider adding another six months to boot so you can help those individuals as well without shortening what you have for your household is that make sense?? Great video by the way

The freezer average is 106w an hour. You should always have a small generator. 2kw at minimum. We can run 2 refrigerators and a freezer. As well as some lights and a TV. With our evaporative cooling. It will run 20hours on 15lt of fuel.

I'm definitely starting my raised beds this spring just waiting for weather to improve a bit so I can level the garden kill off the weeds flatten and the build the raised beds over the top. Think I'm going to go with similar design and size to yours as seems ideal and can put them where you want then have access in between etc. Cheers from London 👍❤️😎🏴

If available in Austria, and Europe. Try Apple Cider vinegar instead of regular clear vinegar. The best Apple Cider vinegar says "with mother" on the label. Has a better taste than the cheap clear vinegars. As an added benefit vinegar can be use for digestion problems. I use one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. 10 to 15 minutes later there's no discomfort. They say vinegar slightly increases the acid in the stomach. Nessessary for digestion of food.

A reason to have a gas mask familiar to many in California is forest fires. Even a small one with the wind blowing in the right direction can make it uncomfortable to do home tasks like mowing the lawn.

with your gas mask, u have to insure the amount of the contaminate does not exceed the limits of the cartridge. for example, if the lvl of the gas cloud is 1000 parts per minute (ppm) and your cartridges are only good for 500 ppm the cartridges will become saturated and u will experience a breakthrough of the gas and the cartridge, and what u inhale will be deadly. also consider rainwater may be contaminated as well.

When I was a boy growing up in Cameron, Louisiana we hunted and fished tremendously. We stocked up on 12 guage shotgun shells and 22 LR bullets. Lol All the men in my family were commercial shrimpers and oystermen. We all hunted since we were five or six years old. Pole fished younger than that. Our freezers we're always full and we shared. City people starve when things get bad. Country boys survive.

6:54 unless you fridge has a "soft start circuit" what you are really fighting against is 'in rush current'. A typical fridge draws about 120 watts. Look up on KZitem how to add in such a circuit for you particular fridge. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Thank-you. If you eat from, and rotate, your food supplies, you quickly find what works. We found that the only #10 cans (gallon, or about 3.8 liters) we could use were farina and steel cut oats. Everything else got down-sized. Using the food trays for seed starting is a great idea.

Rationing will help with making your food supply last longer. We don't need to eat everyday, in fact it's healthy for the human body to go through fasting periods. As long as you have water, that's the main priority.

I am glad we don't have quite that severe of cost for just 1 cart of goods. My reserves are beyond 6 months now for 1 person and I will continue to work on it as long as I can. Still have not needed canned veggies to be opened as overflow from last years garden is still sufficient to cover me into late March or early April. With the government now having the ability to freeze bank accounts in Canada without due process it makes things more precarious. We are near record levels for snow this Winter so hopefully next garden season will be even better then last year as there will not be a shortage of moisture to begin with. Only a few inches away from the biggest snowfall since the 1950's.

Sprouting seeds can give you some greens rather quickly. Or growing micro-greens. Alfa alfa seeds, lentils, beans, peas, cress, etc. Some varieties of lettuce and say, kale - can almost give you some harvest year around in sheltered places (or in balcony or grown inside), even here in southern Finland. Just explore your possibilities....
