Being intentional with God’s Word is essential to living a deep and meaningful life. In this episode, Bible teacher Brad Gray shares a moving story about a hiking trip with his thirteen-year-old son. Over the course of the hike, his son reads thirteen letters written by different people in his life. The letters offer encouragement and wisdom about growing into manhood. They cover a range of topics, but as Brad and his son hike, the two of them delve deeper into a connected conversation about what it means to live well.
It turns out, Jesus and his father Joseph probably did the same thing on a regular basis. Because they worked with stone, it’s very likely they walked several hours a day to and from work in the nearby town of Sepphoris. What did they talk about while they walked? Well, the Torah gives us an idea. In a portion of the Hebrew Scriptures known as the Shema, parents are instructed to constantly talk about God’s words with their children. As a result, discussing God’s words was an ongoing, connected conversation between parents and their kids.
Being intentional with God’s Word is about way more than getting ten minutes of quiet time with God. It’s about digging into God’s Words for ourselves so those words permeate every facet of our lives, including the discussions we have with others. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a greater appreciation for the central role the Bible plays in a well-lived life. May we be the kind of people who dig into God’s Words, discuss them with each other, and then do it again the next day.
