In Rabbis and Disciples Pt 3: Being Like Jesus, Bible Teacher Brad Gray will examine what it looked like for Jesus’s disciples to follow him. As a result, we’ll gain a clearer picture of what it means to follow him ourselves. Jesus wasn’t just any rabbi. He was a rabbi with authority. Which made following him and taking on his “yoke” (interpretation of Torah) an extraordinary privilege.
That’s why the disciples jumped at the chance to leave everything and follow Jesus wherever he went. Their goal wasn’t to learn what Jesus knew. Instead, it was to become who he was. And that didn’t happen in a classroom. It happened in the experiences of everyday life. A disciple wondered things like, “How does the rabbi talk?” “How does he think?” “What does he notice?” It meant, quite literally, following him around wherever he went.
Consequently, everything a rabbi did had a purpose. That’s why the sages developed the saying, “May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi.” In other words, may you pay such close attention and follow your rabbi so closely that we’ll all see the evidence of it because you’re covered in the dust kicked up by his sandals. In Rabbis and Disciples Pt. 3: Being Like Jesus, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of what it means to actually follow Jesus, and you’ll be inspired to follow him more closely in the coming year.
