Couples playing games together can be an absolute social minefield. On the flip side, it can also lead to some great gaming moments.

G'day friends Do you often play with an odd player number of people? Have you experienced some of the things I spoke about in the video or do you think it is something that does not really affect the game play experience at all. Please share your thoughts, stories and experiences in the comment section below. I'd love to hear them. This is a safe space to share. Cheers Danny :)

I have two game groups, and they're both 3 players! Sometimes I think that's the perfect #

Aide from my hubby and my kiddo there is no one that really loves games as we do so we always play 3 players. We did find ourselves teaming when it 2 player games but very rarely but it did work for us. Never had issues being 3 and it's been a great experience for us.

Hello! I'm David, the husband of Connie, the designer of Apiary. We usually play games during board game nights that we host or are meetups with larger groups of players, so we almost exclusively play at the 3 and 4 player count, excluding party and social games. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and making videos that are encouraging for others who enjoy the hobby!

Three player Hegemony was really interesting dynamic, shifting alliances works really well. Even at four players the state isn't very involved in voting.

Many euro games actually shine at 3p for me. 3p is less directly confrontational than 2p (as you mention in the video) and creates good tension but also moves at a good pace. 5p is fine for some games but it depends on the crowd. If someone is very impatient, then it can feel negative as many games do take much longer.

One of my favorite examples is Viticulture. I personally don’t like the tightness that comes with an even player count. Love it at 3 and 5

Some great ideas. I really liked the partnering up one. Many times I'll be with a game group and I've never played or seen the game they are playing, so it would be nice to partner up and learn with someone who already has.

Yep. It allows you to player lower count games but talk to someone about your turn or strategy :)

My partner isn’t into games at all. I’m often the 3rd player with my best friend and her partner. It doesn’t bother me to play as the 3rd wheel but it does mean I spend less time with him on full gaming weekends 😢

There’s several 4 player games that I think are too crowded at 4 but not good at 2, so 3 is the best player count in my opinion. Kingdom Builder and Catan are both best at 3 for example.

I love trying 6 Nimmt at different player counts. It's wild that it goes up to 10, but I see no reason to stop there Danny. Here are some unofficial variants for you 😉 11 players, only deal 9 cards per player 12 players, 8 cards 13-14 players, 7 cards 15-16 players, 6 cards 17-20 players, 5 cards 21-25 players, 4 cards 26-33 players, 3 cards 34-50 players, 2 cards 51+ players... not recommended! Designers cater to what is appealing to publishers (e.g. Stonemaier only accepts pitches for games that play up to 5 players), but depending on the design it can be quite a stretch. Often it is stretched too far! You can see why bgg includes the 'recommended' and 'best' player counts.

I primarily play Euros and find 3-player works excellently with those. 5-player however tend to suck, I always hate it whenever we end up being 5 because people refuse to split the group (while if we're 6 or more, they are happy to) and it eliminates so many of the games I love and the few of them that do still go up to 5, that player count tends to always be the least ideal count

At 5 people, it often makes sense to split up into a 3p game and a 2p game. Leaving one person out is selfish, but I've seen it happen with selfish people. You can play your favorite game some other time, or schedule a special event.

Nice video. One game which I prefer at 3 players (or at 3 hands) is Pandemic

Usually, our games are with my wife and her mother. With the heavier games, just my wife and I. I do prefer it at 3 for most games.

Sean and I usually just play together, and when we go out, it’s usually with another couple. But sometimes my 17 year old plays with the two of us which I really enjoy. 😊
