Beirut Lebanon Explosion August 2020 BBC News
Video Circulating in Social Media shows a massive explosion rocking central Beirut - shattering windows, knocking down doors and shaking buildings several hundred feet away.
Imagine, you’re walking along the street and you heard a loud explosion.
It was so loud that even the seaside rocked like an earthquake.
Before your eyes, you see cars tumbled upside down and bricks and glasses rained down. It all happened so fast and then the next thing you see are buildings collapsing to the ground.
In Beirut, Lebanon on 4th August 2020
The blasts came within seconds of each other.
First, an explosion in Beirut’s port, possibly from a fireworks warehouse, sent a plume of smoke over the capital skyline early evening.
Then a much larger explosion from a building nearby followed by a massive shock wave of white dust and debris that rose so high and spread out for blocks.
The wounded stumbled through destroyed streets to hospitals, only to be turned away in some cases because the hospitals were already overwhelmed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In fact, many of the country’s hospitals were already on the verge of capacity.
And also like in most countries in the world, the number of new coronavirus cases has begun to rise quickly.
Imagine how much more it can damage the economy with this current event.
By late evening, the Health Ministry said, more than 70 people were dead and at least 3,000 wounded in the recent explosion that hit the city.
It was unclear exactly what caused the explosions, but Prime Minister Hassan Diab said an estimated 2,750 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate, commonly used in fertilizer and bombs, had been stored in a depot at the port for six years.
