This is the last ten minutes of a very enjoyable quarter of Grandsire Triples, rung following a wedding at the church. Details can be found here: bellboard.uk/v...
Chilham is a small village situated approximately halfway between Canterbury and Ashford. It's a very beautiful little place as well, with many medieval timber houses lining the streets leading up the hill to the square. The area is dominated by the Jacobean Chilha Castle, a Grade 1 listed country house with an adjacent 11th century Norman keep. To put it simply, Chilham is jam packed with historic buildings!
The Grade 1 listed church of St Mary lies slightly hidden from the main square, the top of the tower just about visible over the rooftops and trees. It is a large building built of flint and sandstone. The Perpendicular nave dates from the 15th century, and the transepts from the 14th century, being built in the Decorated Gothic style. The chancel is a Victorian reconstruction, dating from 1863 and designed by architect David Brandon. The west tower dates from 1534, so just before the Reformation. It is quite a large tower, resembling a castle tower. It contains a 16-2-21cwt ring of eight bells, tenor in E. They are a mixed bag of bells from a range of different founders all hung in a metal frame made in 1912 by John Warner and Sons of London. The three trebles were cast in 1883 by John Taylor and Co of Loughborough, the fourth was cast in 1810 by Thomas II Mears of Whitechapel, the fifth was cast in 1912 by John Warner and Sons of London, the sixth and seventh bells were cast in 1760 by Lester and Pack of Whitechapel and finally the tenor was cast in 1887 by Mears and Stainbank of Whitechapel. The tenor is the former tenor bell of Child Okeford in Dorset; the ring there was remodelled into a lighter ring and the tenor donated to the Keltek Trust. The original tenor bell of Chilham had cracked in 2013 for a second time (after being welded by SoundWeld in 1996) and so it was replaced in 2018 with the Child Okeford tenor. The work was carried out by Matthew Higby and the KCACR. Overall, Chilham are a very nice ring of eight, old fashioned and gutsy with a lot of oomph behind them. I'd thoroughly recommend them!
