Definitly the best interpretation of this aria. With the greatest soprano and tenor of all times (in my opinion). I heard that for the premiere of this Rigoletto, people clapped so long after this aria that they sang it again - something we never see in an opera. Sutherland's voice is sublime, Pavarotti is also at his best. Bravo!

@@commandert5 I have seen many many operas and never even heard of a aria/quartet/piece being repeated in the middle of the opera. However, the etiquette has varied a lot in time. In the 18th and 19th century, opera etiquette varied by country with the Italians basically having none and the British being very strict. In the 20th century, the British model became the norm. Clapping should happen only at the end of an act, start clapping only when the orchestra is done playing (vs. when the singer is don singing), no talking, no walking around etc... By the way, English is not my first language - I do apologize for the grammatical mistakes.

A father sings for his love to his daughter, a daughter sings for her true love, a duke sings for joy and women, a woman sings for good life. Four different emotions come together to make a so wonderful quartet, by the genius of Verdi. Pure opera: just real and deep human emotions singed out by the singers. And if we have these four, Levine at the pit and the most beautiful music of Verdi, we got five minutes of full joy.🎼🎶Viva Verdi!!!😃

This particular rendition and performance remains unbeatable. For nearly 40 years, no one, no group, no performance has come close. They literally took this act to a level that is unprecedented and beyond sublime. One must commend Luciano Pavarotti for that relentless performance - he carried the difficult bridge and essence of the act with such ease and panache. Joan Sutherland, a legendary Madonna as usual, was resplendent and outdid herself to the hilt. Leo Nucci - this is perhaps the most understated talent of all, with a compelling and lush baritone voice that underpins the entire performance - no living soul has performed as "Rigoletto" more! Isola Jones's performance here is worthy of an encomium - her incredible performance here as "Maddalena" is the centrepiece and fulcrum of the act - she is partly the reason why this rendition can hardly be beaten. What an incredible ensemble! Wonderful!

This is one of the most exquisite renditions of this quartet I've ever heard, almost moved me to tears. The expression on Isola Jones's face at the beginning as she's being seduced by Pavarotti is absolutely priceless, a reminder that of course opera's about acting as well as singing.

I love the way Sutherland pauses momentarily before the last note, straightened her back, plants her feet, and breathes in ALL the air she can, so she can bathe the VERY back of the upper tiers with glory at the very end. I was lucky enough to hear her in Traviata when I was young and poor, at Covent Garden in the 70s. I had about the worst seat in the house at the very, very back of the Gods. I still remember the bell-like perfection of her voice in Sempre Libera, how it was super-clear, fizzing with energy and bathing us all in passionate sound. Yet her teeny figure was SO far away on the stage. For two days I heard it in my mind, waking each morning with it ringing still. I was too poor for the whole opera; I had to leave with my friend in order to get to the train station and back to university on the last train before midnight - or pay a double fare. In retrospect I am glad I did not see her die in the last act...just live and sing in the first ones.

It's pretty much [all] I could hear in the ending, as far their voices go, because of Sutherland's oceanic voice-which I don't mind at all.

Listened to it again this evening and it leaves me breathless and speechless. This is pure MAGNIFICENCE! Especially Joan Sutherland at 61 years!!! old with a voice that puts all other sopranos to ......... The Venetians called her La Stupenda and rightly so.

@@missasinenomine She, quite correctly, demanded the same level of professionalism from her fellow performers. A pet hate of hers, and mine, was/is singers coming out of character after singing a famous aria in an opera and taking a bow. She was right and it's not done anymore because of people like La Divina. From the start of your performance to the last bar of that opera, you are in character, simple.
