Playing a nun here, in 1945, has nothing to do with running away four years later with a most admired Italian director whom, by the way, she married in 1950. I don’t see any scandal here. Only bigotry from those who never mind their own business. Actually, the big hypocrisy is that Hollywood made a fuss about it just because she was no longer a money-maker to them, once gone. They are used to pulling the strings of bigotry if needed. That’s plain cynicism. Who’s gonna be fooled by that ? Show business people, especially in Hollywood, don’t believe in anything but cash. Bergman wasn’t that type. After all, she was from Sweden, and they didn’t understand people like her, obviously. Good for her ! (And well done !) Black and white is always a better choice than color for closeups (and it provides the kind of distance that favors and allows the dream ...). I wish they shot more films in black and white nowadays, although it’s more expensive ...

Lots of smiles and tears watching with the children … a real balm to my soul and a much needed rest taking care of the sick while sick. ❤️🕊️ Thank you for making it available for us to savor. Some people have very poor taste so the dislikes could be from fans of rubbish like reality programmes or "woke" modern films. It's a shame for them that they could dislike a lovely, uplifting and family-friendly film like this but then, there's a lot of hatred for Christianity and the message of Christ around these days isn't there? Their loss! God bless you and all here!

When Catholics were Catholic nuns were nuns and priests were priests. I went to a school very similar to this. Then 1970 came and our teacher Sr Agnes walked in without her habit on. We were stunned. She did her best to explain it but nobody was buying. I'll never forget that day as long as I live

One of my favorite movies of all time. Favorite scene, towards the end, when Father O'Malley tells Sister Benedict, she is being sent away because of health reasons and not because they butted heads on a daily bases. The look in Sister's (Ingrid Bergman's) eyes, just makes you well up inside. What actors and actresses back then.

Sentimental movie - reminds me of my Catholic grade school, even the Nun's habits are similar. Although our classrooms were crowded the Nuns had complete control because they had our respect. Since religion was a subject in Catholic schools we learned about our Catholic faith from the Baltimore Catechism. We not only received an excellent education, but learned how to be disciplined and how to be respectful. Thank you for this beautiful movie!

People find some parts of this story hard to believe but some things I know to be very factual:.During that generation, people could actually be dying and the doctors and family members would keep the truth from them. Also, I've been a Christian for almost 40 years and have seen generosity on the same level of "Mr. Bogardus" (and even greater). Don't be afraid to ask God for the Amazing. He longs to fulfill the dreams of His beloved children. I believe it actually delights God when we have enough faith to ask Him for the "impossible". Finally, bitterness is a horrible prison to live in but praying for the person who has hurt you is a crucial first step to being freed from it.

Thank you for sharing! A truly beautiful classic film. Came out the year of victory in World War II, when the country had been through so much and lost so many of our men for freedom. Of all of Ingrid Bergman's films, I think this is the only one I recall her singing in, and she did a respectable job. Bing always did well playing a priest, with no affectation. Wholesome and a great tear-jerker with plenty of humor and real dialog on a simple soundstage. Many of the commenters wish they'd make films like this now, but it isn't PC for a teacher to teach a boy to fight, or a man to wipe makeup off a girl's face, or to portray any religious people as real human beings, much less Christians. So you couldn't make a film like this in Hollywood today. Hopefully, as PureFlix and others outside Hollywood grow, there will be remakes of this, The Bishop's Wife, and many others to uplift and inspire a new generation.
