STORYLINE
The sound of ringing bells filled the air of Old Havana moments after the Vatican announced the death of Pope John Paul II.
Havana's Cathedral opened its doors and rang its bells calling the faithful to church to pray for the soul of John Paul II.
While the Cathedral did not fill to capacity, parishioners arrived in small groups and lit candles next to a picture of the Pope.
Many were visibly stricken with grief and openly cried in the street and in the church.
"We feel greatly affected by the death of the (Holy)Father. He was so important so important to us," said one faithful in tears.
A funeral Mass for John Paul will be celebrated at the cathedral Monday evening by Cardinal Jaime Ortega, the island's top Roman
Catholic churchman.
Afterwards, the Cuban prelate will travel to Rome to attend the pope's funeral there and participate in the conclave of cardinals that will elect John Paul II's successor.
The Catholic Church and the Cuban government improved their relations since the visit of Pope John Paul II to the island back in January of 1998.
Along with the granting of permits, December 25 (Christmas day) is now recognised as a holiday, albeit not as a religious one.
