This amazing sea creature called a beluga (or white whale) played with us the whole afternoon during our sail on the coast of Norway. When we entered more shallow water (50 meter) and didn’t see and hear anything anymore, we thought he was gone. But nope, there he was again. He even followed us all the way to the bay we docked in, only 4 meters deep… now we were thinking this is not normal.
So we did some research and indeed this is not normal. This beluga is named #Hvaldimir and came from Russia to Norway back in 2019. He was harnessed and there are some stories that he was trained to spy. For sure he was trained for something considering his behavior.
We experienced Hvaldimir as an amazing smart beautiful animal and it is truly far out to see such an animal for that long alongside your boat. Sad part of the story is that because of human action this animal is now living alone as it should live in a group of belugas. He is trained, makes real contact with you and is very social. But is also waiting for you to throw fish since he had learned that. Luckily nowadays he learned to catch fish himself and despite all the scars he looks healthy, fat and happy.
In Norway there is an organization www.onewhale.org who fights for the safety of Hvaldimir. They also want him to live with other belugas in the future. For the people sailing or traveling in Norway and meet this beluga, please check out this website to learn more. Also don’t feed him and don’t bother him too much. We saw some videos with 300 tourists on a jetty waking him up to do some tricks, very awful. Our meeting with Hvaldimir touched us deeply and we’re hoping by sharing this story to support his safety, survival, and entitlement to a natural life.
