Ben E. King was one of the lead singers of the R&B vocal group "The Drifters" & sang the lead vocals of some of their biggest hits such as "Save The Last Dance For Me", "There Goes My Baby", "This Magic Moment", "I Count the Tears" & "Sometimes I Wonder". He only recorded 13 songs with the Drifters then went solo. "Spanish Harlem" & "Stand By Me" were his biggest hits. But he recorded many other songs such as "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)", "Seven Letters", "Amor", "Here Comes The Night", "Ecstasy", "That's When It Hurts", "I (Who Have Nothing)", "What Is Soul?", "Supernatural Thing" etc.

Keep in mind that the 537 million views are since this video was uploaded in 2009, but the song was first released in 1962, so the total playtime is many orders of magnitude higher than KZitem stats shows. (And that's a good thing to keep in mind for any old songs like this) The song was a huge hit in the 1960s all over the world. It received a revival in the 1980s as part of the soundtrack for the 1986 movie of the same name, Stand By Me, which since you've not heard this song before it's a safe bet you've not seen that movie either, which is an amazing film based on a Stephen King story about four young friends that went on an adventure one summer in the 1960s, and the soundtrack is all 1950s and 1960s songs. It's a great movie and a cultural necessity to watch, you'll love it. Cheers

It’s a great movie. Unlike most of Stephen King’s work it doesn’t deal with the supernatural. It’s based on an incident in his life when he was about twelve years old.

The tricky thing abou the 60s is that music changed SO MUCH over those 10 years. For music in the United States you have to look at music prior to February 19, 1964 as being a whole different world from music after February 19, 1964.

Ben obtained some of the ideas, lyrics from the book of Psalms. I find the strings solo to be the most beautiful portion of any music I have ever heard. The song is just so incredible. Oh, 1961.

Talent goes straight to the heart. The songs from the 50s into the 60s were simple all done with heart and talent. Here's another simple one: "Venus" by Frankie Avalon. It's such a simple prayer for love.

There are soooo many songs by soooo many artists from this era that are worth a listen. You could easily do 3 songs a day for a month and barely scratch the surface. It is impossible for me to pick my three favorites from the 60s because there are so many, but I’ll give you three great suggestions to start, all different in style: Silence Is Golden by The Tremeloes I Can Hear Music by The Beach Boys Crimson And Clover by Tommy James And The Shondells

I could not believe my ears, and had to re-wind and listen a number of times to be sure, when I heard Mr. Duffy say "Look at that young buck!" when the photo of Mr. King appeared on the screen. Intentionally or not, Mr. Duffy's sentence was intensely RACIST in its description of Mr. King. For hundreds of years "white folk" have described black males, young or old, as "bucks". Mr. Duffy owes his viewers/listeners an outright apology for perpetuating such a racist reference and should promise never to use it again.
