I had some fun building a bedside clock based on the slightly more advanced DS3231 RTC. It can keep the time and date extremely accurately by running off the auto recharging coin cell for days on end. It also has some extra features like outputting an accurate 1Hz signal, setting alarms that trigger an output signal and a readable temperature sensor!

Hey, don't knock yourself by saying you're "just" 14. Your age is as much an asset as it is a drawback in our society. In person you're definitely at a huge disadvantage in our society who really does not like adolescents at all. But on the Internet, no one knows how old you are unless you tell them. (Sometimes people will guess your age based on how you write online but it's just a guess and plenty of adults write like idiots. In either case, it's best to try not to fall into that category, it just makes things easier.) Being an adolescent means that your brain is in the best condition to learn advanced concepts than it ever is in your life. You don't have tons of stuff to un-learn when trying to learn something new like older people usually do. Neuroplasticity, roughly how easy it is for your brain to change in order to learn things, is sky high in adolescence PLUS the brain is developed enough to be able to handle abstract concepts. There truly is nothing that you cannot understand if you set your mind to learn it and have the resources. Thanks to the Internet, you've definitely got the resources, you just need the determination, which it sounds like you already have, so you're golden! Personally, I would love to see Ben do an in-depth from-basics educational series as well. I'd be right there learning alongside you. I'm just a 37 year old kid, but I'm just as ignorant as you. I've tried learning electronics multiple times and had a hard time with it. Mostly because I learned programming when I was really young, and I know computers extremely in depth and electricity works so different from how digital systems work I have to do a lot of that un-learning. I grew up online, getting Internet access when I was 12 (in 1990, which was even before the WWW was around, everything was text-based back then) and it is unquestionably the best way to grow up. I was able to learn absolutely anything I wanted to, and to hang out with and learn from (and teach others after I learned!) adults without most of them even knowing they were talking to someone so young. Everyone should have that. Good luck!

We really like the PiTop kit. I preordered in the summer and it came in Nov 2015. It was easy enough to assemble that my 11 year old did most of the work on his own. My kids love opening the window up and showing off the guts inside. Why would you buy this over a cheap laptop? Like, Ben said, hardware accessibility to the RaspberryPi2 allows you to add your own low level bits to the pi. The PiTop's CEED Universe game/learning tool includes walk throughs for coding and eventually plugging in hardware and controlling it through your code in the CEED environment (we haven't gotten there yet). This was a big selling point for me. Why buy this over a plain pi2? Portability & software suite. The pi-top is great for kids to be able to work on projects and take it around to show other people. It is more rugged and portable than a stand alone Pi and all the parts hanging off of it.

+shawnsdada how expensive is something like a arduino ? Or maybe a whole pi that you can run of that notebook ? Well add that to the 210$ price and check again, you would need a breadboard and components in a additional carry case anyway. Most things offered by third part vendors for the Pi are to expensive for their own good. I got my components all from dumpsters, even things like LCD screens. If you ask nicely many system houses let you have that stuff just like that, you are just saving them waste management costs in the end. That`s coming from someone that has money to burn on a lot of nonsense I wish I never bought, still making something out of junk is kind of gratifying in its own right.

Would this be good for just trying out Linux on real hardware? I've been running many different distros in VMware Workstation for around 2 years now, and i want to try some of them on real hardware. I don't have any old desktops for laptops, my laptop is too modern to allow Linux to even do a live boot (UEFI.) My only concern is that the Pi uses an Arm architecture SoC and not an x86 processor, so i would likely be limited in what distros could be run on one. (I use Manjaro.)

Ok this is cool. Putting a laptop together by yourself sounds really fun to me and once you're done, you can do whatever you want with it. For me i'd make it a retro games console and put a Retrode 2 (which can read and backup game carts as well as let you use classic controllers. Ben if you're interested you can buy one here: www.dragonbox.de/en/71-retrode-2-retrode-4260416650091.html) in the laptop itself and maybe wire some controller ports into the laptop case. Then i'd install RetroPie and Windows 10 on the Pi so I could play the games.
