@@SantanderCinemashe just said you had to watch the reactions of the actors also the word phrases that popped up on the screen - Also with the better movies like that one they played musical instruments - with the B movies they might have a off key piano player lol - Down here in the deep South many of the movie houses had huge water tanks in the ground and a wagon or a truck would dump ice in those tanks - That cold water provided air conditioning - the air condition just dried the air out - normally it might be 95 with 70% humidity - the AC might pull it down to 90° and 60% humidity - That little bit of temperature drop along with humidity dropping makes a huge difference when it's steaming hot -

During the sea battle, cue 51, after the man is tied to the bowsprit, is actually the cue "Excitement," composed by Joseph Carl Breil for Griffith's "Intolerance." The cue is not identified as such in the Ben-Hur score and I suspect other parts of the score were compiled by Mendoza from generic photoplay music.
@silentmoviefan8042

You are correct! I've actually identified most of the pieces of music used in the original score. If you turn on the closed captions (hit the CC button on the bottom of the screen and you'll see a red underline) you will see a caption briefly at the start of each piece of music. I also marked the one's I wasn't able to identify. I reconstructed this score by tracking down full orchestra arrangements of each cue that I could identify, the others I arranged from the piano and first violin scores in my collection. For example, I wasn't able to identify cue 53 (at 56:20) so that is my orchestral arrangement based on the piano score.

The score I used was the original score compiled by David Mendoza and William Axt for the New York release in 1925. There undoubtedly have been other scores prepared and used over the years with each person using their own ideas for the music to use (even back when the movie was new and being shown around the country).

Will they ever release a full cut that includes the “Christ nailed hand” scene & the “Psalm 30.5” title that opens the final scene?
@silentmoviefan8042
Жыл бұрын
These scenes may have been lost when the color scenes were added back into this version of the film - I don't really know why they aren't in this version. It's always possible that these scenes may be included in future releases but like anything else any company would have to weigh the costs of producing a new release verses what is already out there and if they felt they could sell enough copies to justify the expense. The "Weeping may endure for a night..." title (Cue 145) title does exist on my personal 16mm print (which is the 1931 re-release with the modified score by William Axt and in B/W). I couldn't find the "Christ nailed hand" scene that you mention, unfortunately, I don't have a good way to transfer from film to video and maintain a good quality. Incidentally, the score on the sound version does use a lot of the same music but there are also a lot of changes (probably for copyright reasons).

@@silentmoviefan8042 The two scenes were part of the Thames Silent print made in 1987 by Kevin Brownlow (who wrote about the film in his book THE PARADE GONE BY) & David Gill with a score by Carl Davis. It appeared on the TNT Network several times particularly December 24 1989 & 1990 (as part of a “Silent Night” marathon of silents) and March 29 1992 (as part of the Network’s documentary MGM WHEN THE LION ROARS). Do you take requests? The album release for Birth of a Nation only involves the music Breil composed for it, but the conductor score, which I found, has all of it. Also "Monsieur Beaucaire".

I mainly focus on scoring films that I am going to perform or just generally interest me that don't have good (or historically accurate) scores on them already. I have piano/conductor copies of the original scores for both those films..."Birth of a Nation" would be such a controversial film today that I would never be able to perform it, I've never never been that into "Monsieur Beaucaire" although maybe someday. I enjoy the films that have been scored by Robert Israel and The Mont Alto orchestra and think their scores are great so there is no point in posting another version on KZitem (although I perform a lot of those movies in concert).

They are two very different films. This 1925 version follows the book more closely in the prescence and actual miracles of Christ; the healing of the dead baby and the on-screen healing of the lepers. The chariot race is better, more action, bettere directed, more character conflict for example between Roam, Greek versus the Jew. More monted moving camera shots on the chariots. Huge sets, bigger crowds. The scenes of crowds running to and fro in fear as the sky darkened during the crucifixion were not even in the 1959 Heston version. I loved this and will watch it again. 100 years old, a real classic!
