Working as a cameraman for PBS, I had the opportunity to visit Rózsa at his studio a year or so before he passed on. We hit it off very well, and he was quite friendly and open during the interview. One of the most thrilling moments was when he opened his safe and presented us with the original manuscript for "Ben Hur", which was bound in red silk. You can imagine what it was like to flip through it and read the score in his own hand. (I still get goosebumps when I remember it.) Of course when he realized that I could sight read his score, he opened up even more. "Would you like to know where I got my inspiration from?" he asked. Naturally, I did. He pressed a button and the curtains covering the entire northern side of his studio opened to reveal the San Gabriel Mountains, just above Glendale, in all their splendor. Touching that score was better than holding an Oscar. It was 2 of the most enjoyable hours I ever spent in Hollywood.

I was 8 or 9 years old when I saw Ben Hur in a movie theater with a wide screen when it 1st came out (i was born in November 1951) ~ the theater was filled with priest's & nun's & bus loads of youngster's taken out on field trip's in 7th & 8th grades from school. It had a powerful effect on cementing my faith in Christianity! Did you know that General Lew Wallace showed his script/book to an atheist & the atheist became a believer?! Awesome fact; reinforces my faith & increases the value of this magnificent one of a kind film! Miklos Rosa was born to compose this score; as Stephen Boyd was born to play Masala & Heston to be Ben Hur! This story was not in the Bible; but It Could Have Been! Greatest Film Ever Made!!!

Finally, one of the most requested scores is here! Miklós Rózsa’s magnum opus and one of the (literally) greatest film scores of all time, even featuring instruments the composer specially let built for the recording sessions, based on his researches in Rome. Originally it was planned to publish this video earlier this year but I thought that now is the perfect time. Christmas and on the jump to 2019, which will mark the 60th anniversary of the movie. As big and untouchable it is, it had to be put into an exceptional 20 minutes presentation. Many popular cues, such as the Overture and Star Of Bethlehem are featured here, but I focused more on the great but lesser known cues to convey the feeling of the epic journey Ben Hur had to take, such as the fantastic Fertility Dance, Farewell To Rome, The Procession To Calvary and the outstanding Sea Battle sequence, where the orchestra performs Rózsa’s music with such an energy and as striking as the scenery for which it was written for. Also, I have to say that the beloved “Jesus Theme”, could not be featured here more than two small times, during copyright reasons. The famous Parade Of The Charioteers is not featured here, too, because the cue is unfortunately one of the so few(!) that did not survive in good audio quality. So, I included Panem Et Circenses, instead. I hope that you enjoy this shortened, but no less epic journey Miklós Rózsa invites you to!

I cannot think of a movie that conveys such amazing history and the music, is epic. I was born in 1959, the year Ben Hur came out. The score is utterly amazing. Every detail. Nothing left to chance. One watches the movie, sees and hears the actors, the action, but it is this beautiful score that keeps everything moving along. Everything about this movie, the actors, the scenery, the messages, the various stages, the costumes and of course, the music is of the highest standards and quality. The movie itself is my personal favorite. My favorite scene. The chariot racing. Which was done in absolute stunning detail. So many scenes were amazing, but it was, in the end this most beautiful score that made it all come completely together. 🌹

Besides Tunberg, S.N. Behrman, Maxwell Anderson, Gore Vidal and Christopher Fry are known to have added to the screenplay, and both William Wyler and Charlton Heston were known to be making changes to the script while they were shooting it.
@gregoryhall5647
3 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, not much of the original Tunberg script was left by the time Wyler and the additional writers (Gove Vidal, Maxwell Anderson, S.N. Berman and Christopher Fry) he brought onboard were through with it. Wyler was insistent that Fry be given at least equal credit for the screenplay along with Tunberg, but the Screen Guild would not go along. I have also read somewhere that Wyler was so upset that he took out an ad in Variety urging Academy members not to vote for the Ben Hur screenplay in the Oscar race. It is a shame not to have won in that category as I believe it is a particularly difficult task to write for a film set in ancient times: one has to avoid making the language too archaic on the one hand and, on the other, avoid sounding too modern. Having seen the film in its original 1959 release at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and many, many times subsequently, I noticed some time ago, for the first time, a wonderful recurring motif that weaves in and out throughout the entire film: the use of "hands" both visual and spoken. It starts with the Main Credits as the camera moves in on the hands of God and Adam as their fingers are about to touch in Michelangelo's fresco; many additional references leading up to the quick shot of Christ's hand nailed to the cross at the crucifixion scene, and the film concludes with Ben Hur's line "and I felt his words take the sword out of my hand." In a way, the film is framed from start to finish with "hand" references. I don't know for sure, but strongly suspect this was intentional. See how many other visual and verbal hand motifs you can pick up next time you watch the film. And, yes, I also believe it is the greatest score ever written for a motion picture.

On another YT page, I mentioned that Miklos Rosza was one of the great masters of Hollywood movie scores. His scoring of Ben-Hur took a majestic turn. Epic and gloriously written, it befitted the film (11 Oscars, including Best Picture). The wide screen process of the 1950's also helped to prop Ben-Hur into popularity with the public. MGM's Camera 65 process made good use of certain scenes, most notably the chariot race scene, the opening scene with the falling star heading towards Bethlehem as Christ was being born, and the crucifixion of Christ. A big thank you for presenting the above video.

I was six years old and this movie was the great success of that moment. It has won eleven Academy Awards and this record was not achieved by another picture until Titanic was released. This soundtrack is just perfect in all senses.

The greatest film score of all time, I mean too. This film was wreely a whole world.This"Tale of the Christ" was wreely for us, people, education to a christian sightseeing, and a christian live. The Christ is always with us, in the "running speed", in our living difficulty... until the Cross. With His Death, after bearing the Cross, us save, giving the Holy Spirit, and with Them, the Resurrection... for us all. His Strength, Holy Spirit, Eternally Love, makes us loving each others, necessary in the way of the Commandments. The Tale of "Ben Hur", and the sound of Miklos Rozsa helps us so much.

i first fell in love with classical music in grade 6 when my class went to see a concert at massy hall toronto ontario, thats over 48 years ago. God thank u for my European culture, it is not white privilege. it is European Privilege. WE Europeans gave so much in this world. to make it a better place, this music brings me closer to God.

My family and I first saw BEN-HUR (1959) in Washington DC, just before we left the USA for Dad's new post in Jordan, where we could not see this movie again. But my older sister went to a boarding school at U.S. air base in France, where she found a recording of the music on an LP, and she brought it to Jordan for Christmas. She didn't tell me she had it, she just put the record on the turntable in the living room while I was eating breakfast in the kitchen, and as soon as I heard the first three notes I hollered and ran into the living room to listen. That was a re-recording of the music, but music from the soundtrack has since become available, and it sounds better!

That is such a great story! Thank you for sharing. When I grew up, in the 70's, my mother kept telling me how great the movie was and how impressed she had been by it when she first saw it. As a consequence I wanted to see it no matter what. In fact, I thought that Ben Hur must've been the greatest movie ever made (which it might well be). Unfortunately though, we couldn't afford a VCR and the film had never been shown on TV until then (I grew up in Germany). After two of three years though, one day there appeared an ad in the paper that a large old art-deco cinema would be screening the film. We bought a ticket early and the single showing soon sold out. What was amazing though, was that the theatre was filled with parents taking their kids to share their own experience from their childhood/youth, just like my mother was.

So untrue tbh. Almost all of the budget went towards execs, actors, extras, stunt peoples and full scale models. The CGI in that film is not as prevalent as most people think. When James Cameron released Titanic...he thought it would bomb like woah and hated how much it had cost to make.
