Thank you, Dr. K, for a delightful interview! You and Ben are comparable in many ways, but most importantly, you use your talents to enrich and bring happiness to others. God Bless and keep you both in good stead, during these troubled times.

makes you wonder whether it is vital to learn to sheet music. Although Ben seems a one off in this respect.

It does help. Music is like reading. Kind of like talking. You can learn to talk, but not learn to read, but it helps to know how. I would consider sheet music vital. That is how you write music and that is how it remains. People today really underestimate how things written down, is so important.

BUT I must add that I’d love to learn to play by ear because that’s talent on its own. I can’t read music but I’d love to learn by ear. There are piano teacher who will teach by ear first. So don’t think I don’t see merit in your comment. It’s a different skill next to reading music. Have one person who can read and write music and the other who can put it together on the piano.
