Haha. Now that some time has gone by, I don’t treat it with as much respect. I fix lawnmowers and chainsaws on it sometimes and don’t always put something under it. It is being taken for granted.

A work of art! I will make a workbench this year. Will have to use construction lumber as economy tok a free-fall when my dog got diabetes last year. If I can manage to make it a fraction as nice as this one I will be overjoyed! Hat’s off to you, and ten thumbs up!

Thank you so much for the compliment. Just having a workbench is the start of great things to come from your shop even if it is made from construction lumber.

Thank you for a great video. Your story about the biker and being a perfectionist really hit home. I have above average mechanical skills and been building things since I was a kid. Wood working is new to me and I find myself redoing things over and over to get perfection just as you have mentioned. Tomorrow I will go at it again with a different mind set. I appreciate the advice. New follower, thanks.

@@danmccarthy444 Honestly, the longer videos get skipped more often than not thanks to my ADD, lol Under 10 minutes is a go most times if it's something I'm interested in, and under 7 minutes is a go almost always. Just my prospective, hope it helps.

This is jaw-dropping AWESOME, Dan! I love your creation of this practical work of art, as well as the lessons you teach with your work, the value of persistence and the acceptance of mistakes or imperfections. I nearly cried when your wooden dowel broke, but laughed out loud because of your caption, "Gumption Attack!"

Nice work Dan! I'm building the same thing, but in Ash instead of Oak. Thanks for posting the video!
@danmccarthy444

Ash would make a beautiful workbench. The red oak was kind of stringy when I was chopping out the mortises. Ash will someday be a very rare wood and so your bench will get more valuable with age.

You did a great job on this build, I'm sure there must have been other "gumption traps" in addition to the broken dowel. I am about to start building this workbench from the same Benchcrafted plans. I hope I will produce one as nice as yours.

Where were you during my college freshman year philosophy class?😅 I had to read zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance for that class. I was only 20 years old at the time. I found the book to be extremely boring. I think if I were to read it now it would probably be a lot different but back then it was hard for me to get through.

Haha. Yeah, I read it when I was 20 and read it again when I was 60. I was not forced to read it though. That might take some of the magic out of it.

Great Job. Really Like that vise. Could you give me some information on it? I just completed my wood working table last Monday. I don't have a vise yet.
@danmccarthy444
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that vise is great. I bought the hardware from Benchcrafted and followed their instructions. I just drew pencil lines where I needed to shave the bevel and went at it with a sharp plane. I think I learned a lot about sharpening planes in the process. Now I use the vise a lot for all types of purposes.

Haha. Yes the wood came from a guy who has a portable sawmill and cuts down trees on farmer’s tree rows. He sold me 8/4 red oak and I didn’t feel the need to plane it down.

I found it interesting that you waxed the pins, did you not want them to be glued?
@danmccarthy444
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. No glue. The wax was to get them to steer around the slightly offset hole and draw the bench together. The sound of the dowels as they drove in rose up in pitch and the separate parts became one.

At 126 rejections, ZATAOMM holds the record for most rejections of an eventual #1 NYT best seller. How's that for gumption? Pirsig suggested that when you hit a snag, you go clean your tools. I sharpen up when I hit a gumption trap. So why did the dowel break? Pirsig would have wanted to figure it out. Draw bore I assume. Maybe too much offset? Maybe the diameter of the dowel in relation to the body of the table and leg? And was that a drill index you were using to size the dowel? How did you deal with the mishap? This art is all about quality - not the tools - not the wood - not the bench - the product is quality.
@danmccarthy444
3 жыл бұрын
Did not know that about Pirsig’s book. I think the dowel broke because of fatigue and inattention. Motivation and gumption are the hardest qualities for me to sustain, and so I press on.
