Great video! A little tip to those who care. If you wrap masking tape around the screw so it just fits in the hole. It will stay perfectly centered in the through hole.

I have this install coming up soon. Appreciate the tip re: counter bore before you tap. Let me ask you, did you buy/use a tap for metal or for wood? I've been told that the metal taps will work just fine in wood and that's what i originally bought. Then i got nervous about it not being right in a very large and expensive hunk of walnut so i ordered a wood tap. Thanks again for the video Gary! You've been a huge help to me through this build!

Metal tap. I would send back the wood tap you ordered unless you have another use for it Doug. Thanks for being an avid supporter!

Love the videos. Only problem I have is hearing the dialog. I have the volume turned up to it's highest setting on my MacBook pro, but still sometimes have to strain to hear what is being said. I don't have this problem with other youtube videos from other sites, only this one.

You’re not the first person to say there is an audio issue with some of my videos. I’ve asked various people I know to play the video(s) in question and report back to me. So far nobody I have talked to directly can duplicate poor audio so I’m not sure what to do about it @dallasryan. I do have a suspicion it has something to do with the parts of my videos that I narrate because I plug my wireless Rode 2 filming microphone into my computer to do narration. Before I upload completed videos, I watch all of them start to finish beforehand and they all play normally on my MacBook Pro but since I’ve had a few comments like this maybe I should just buy a dedicated microphone for narrating to see if that fixes it. In any event thank you for watching my video. I appreciate it very much. Also, thank you for letting me know about the audio issue.

@dallasryan, quick update.... I bought a Blue Yeti microphone to narrate future videos so hopefully that solves the audio issue.

Gary: Thanks for sharing. I am wondering if it is a requirement that a leg vise chop in a Roubo bench extend all the way to the floor? Nothing is ever held down there, and the criss cross mechanism attaches further up the chop?
@garynelles

Although you are probably correct, I think you would want to keep it as low as possible so that it doesn’t get in the way of whatever you want to hold in the leg vise.

Great video thanks. Any tips for drilling those 3/8” or 9.5mm holes across the chop, other than a (very) long drill bit and steady hand?
@garynelles

I used a drill press and drilled from both sides as far as I could (about 4” from each side). Then I put the bit in my cordless drill so that at least 4.5” was sticking out so I could complete the hole from each side. If you are going to do it by hand, I would buy a long drill bit and use two small squares (or blocks) as a guide to help ensure you’re drilling square. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

What are your thoughts on installing the criss cross on a chop that’s 2 inches thick? I have a 2 inch thick birch board that I was planning to use until I read the instructions. The mortise is about an inch and a half deep?

This a great question that many people wonder about. I would try to laminate an additional piece of wood onto the one you already have. See page 7 of the installation instructions. I hope this helps and thanks for watching! benchcrafted.com/cdn/shop/files/file-crisscross_glide-instructions.pdf?v=15203092552444430418

Its a 1/4 inch drill bit for tapping first and then use the 5/16-18 tap, which is standard. I'm planning on putting out a comprehensive, step by steop, vid for installation because after spending 500+ on this it is nerve racking and there arent really any comprehensive vids out there on this.. stay tuned. it really isn't that hard guys and despite a lot of other videos, not this one, everything doesn't need to be perfect like a lot of people do. there is SOME error. For example, the 1-1/4 hole that goes through the chop and leg. its really hard to get perfect, there is 1/8 inch play all the way around.

wonderful video, very helpful. I have all the hardware sitting in my shop I just need to build the bench to go with it. I wish you were closer to Toronto so I could pick your brain a little more. the intrinsic cost of every element makes me anxious to begin. Also I just spray paint the Robertson heads for the bushing.

Thanks for your kind words Matt. I appreciate it. Hit me up on Instagram because we can easily do a video call on there. I’ve done it with a few guys out of the United States and it works great.

Great video! If you have a circular or track saw, it works great for removing the scallops along that deep long mortise as well, since I don't have a router.
