Hey Jeff, you should try the Gerber Sharkbelly. Its 2.3oz 420HC with great heat treat, and best of all its about $30! I've had mine for over a year now and its been awesome. Probably has the most pocket time of all my EDC knives. Its friendly looking for non knife lovers and it has a super deep carry paperclip style clip. It keeps its sharpness and it extremely easy to sharpen. Over all its been a super awesome budget priced edc knife.

I love the lanyard hole. I use the outer layer of some blaze orange paracord as my lanyard. This way if I drop the knife on the trail it's easier to see. This knife paired with a 4" fixed blade is awesome in the woods when I'm trying to put in miles and carrying a heavy ruck.

Benchmades are seriously over priced by 30+ dollars with each of their knives. A good example is the 940 (g10 version) vs the spyderco para3... Both g10, both s30, similar enough locks (fingers stay out of the blade path) the 940 is $175, and the para 3 is around $130. Then look at the para 3 light weight, $99... The bugout is $120-135... Zt? $250 got me the 0562cf which uses real carbon fiber, titanium, cpm 20cv steel, and a great action. Benchmade? $250 got me the limited freek in g10, m4 steel and lock stick... I love Benchmades but I can't justify the money for their products, especially considering I've got 10 over the past couple years and every single one had Q.C issues. So fuck em.

Send it back and $25 later you have a new blade for a lifetime.

@@evictioncarpentry2628 Moto z2 play that I bought used for less than 200 bucks... but close guess 👌 also, the only things I can give benchmade is their warranty and everything is American made. Lock strength means jack shit all things considered. (That's why slip joints we're a thing for many many years and are still here.) In all the years I've been abusing my knives, I've never had a lock fail... (Outside of those shit mtechs I bought when I was like 12) From how much I use knives, I have to sharpen Spydercos s30v about once a week. Benchmades I have to sharpen 2 times. I have never broken a spyderco blade. Tho I've only broke the tip off one benchmade. (Bugout, using it to pry paint cans, which I do with all my work knives). Spydercos grinds usually slice better than benchmades. I could keep going. Both companies make quality products. One has far better quality control but shit warenty, the other has awful quality control, charges $20-$50 more than their products are worth, but have a great warranty and will fix their fuck ups that they sent the knife out with. I'm a benchmade fanboy. I've owned double the amount of them then I have Spydercos. I just can look at this stuff objectively.

The light weight is one of my favorite features. My gun and extra mags are where most of the weight on my belt comes from and I like it that way. There are plenty of knives in the cheaper market, too many really. Virtually everything CRKT makes is in that market. I have knives that are 5, 6 or 7 ozs. I think in the end, it turned out better for Benchmade going with S30V for this knife instead of a cheaper steel. If I purchased this knife and wanted put after-market scales on it, I feel that I would get more value out of the upgrade. You probably wouldn't buy this knife for 50 dollars if it had an AUS-8 or 440C blade and then spend twice that much to outfit it with nice titanium scales. That actually might have been the only reason for some people buying this knife.

people are always looking into aftermarket options and add-ons for this knife. as for me, I love this knife the way it is. it is controversial because Benchmade has challenged our idea of what "just enough" means for a quality knife, and they have succeeded. yes, plastic isn't the highest quality material, but it doesn't need to be. It's lightweight, affordable, durable enough for the knife's purpose, and perfectly fits the Bugout's mantra of minimalism. as the old saying goes, great design is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but rather when there is nothing left to take away.

I’m a welder and the less metal dust and sparks i have on my knife the better i am lol(i put it between a leather pouch for my tape bla bla bla and the pouch of my leatherman surge). The lanyard is a good way to not have to search too long for it because sometimes it really goes deep in my pocket. I only grab the little piece of paracord to get it out! It looks good and is really lightweight as well!

I was just talking to a coworker the other day about benchmade and the bugout. I said the same thing that they should have made this a cheaper knife. Or just offer the red class again and compete with the Chinese market. There are certain Chinese brands that have really stepped up their game and for $40-$60 you can get a hell of a knife. I also dont understand the quarter inch folding splitting mauls that everyone likes. If you need a knife like that then get a fixed blade. I like sleek and thin blades that slice very well. Such as this bugout, but one thing my coworker and I talked about, was making a new version of the bugout with g10 and full liners. Call it something else or whatever, make it a custom option on their website, throw 154cm on it and cut 60 dollars off the price.

This knife IMHO is the ideal edc knife. The name is poor, it wouldn’t work well in a bugout environment, it’s to light. But for day to day use it’s almost perfect. Of course it’s a Benchmade and expensive, both negatives. The fact that it flexes protects the blade. One isn’t going to pry with it out of fear it would break, back to the name Bugout, so it will last. I don’t hear many stories of them coming apart, but I’m sure they have when missed used.

I'd bet $60 of the price of the Bugout goes entirely to engineering, warranty services, etc. So even if they made it with 8CR steel, it would still cost $80+ and no one is going to pay that much for an 8CR knife.

The butterfly tax could be a major cost either way but I kind of agree with you. Imagine a lower end steel but still not low low end like perhaps 154 or d2, hell even vg-10 and if it's the price around the delica range? Even a little higher? Hell I'm down.

I just think it’s too expensive. Yeah it’s cool but there’s too big of a difference between the production and retail prices. They’re basically cheating you out of 100 bucks. That said, I still want to buy it for some reason.

The idea with the cheaper steel is nice but... I think the biggest reason why it's expensive is the name on it: Benchmade. So if they made the same knife with cheap steel, it wouldn't cost 40 bucks but something around 80.

if one wants the "axis lock" get a ganzo firebird it has the same fun factor, i got a ganzo firebird f755 which has a "axis lock" because benchmade no longer has the copyright for the "axis lock" which companys has been copying for years

can you do a video about how to go about making trades? Stuff like, good places to find willing traders, how to actually go about making the exchange, if its done via mail is there ways to safe guard yourself. You know just kind of a general good trading practice and etiquette run down.

They could even have put something a little better than 440c (like D2) in the blade and charged even less than $40.

I really love the bugout, I look at it every time I go to the local gun shop. The only problem is I have been feeling the weight = quality thing, so the bugout has been a new challenge for me because the handles throw me off... that being said I still somehow love it and it’s gonna be my next purchase going into summer!! The lightweight should be a big plus now that shorts weather is in!

It is a good knife, but your right it should be $50 bucks with a cheaper steel. The blade is so light that the axis lock doesn't make the blade fall as easily as the heavier benchmades I have to.

Everyone complaining about the price doesn't understand you're paying for the best warranty around. Break your blade in half or grind it down to nothing over 3 years of hard use on any Kershaw, Spyderco or any knife. Guess what? You're buying a whole new knife. Break or grind your BM down to nothing... $25 you get a new blade installed and your knife tuned up/refreshed completely. Do the math. If you want a disposable knife, buy something else. If you want a quality knife backed, best warranty and repair service with replacement parts, you spend a little more upfront to save less in the end.

Except Kershaw and Spyderco replace blades for cheaper and have better quality control and value. They don't advertise their warranty much but if you look into their warranty they are arguably better.

@@papasauce234 spyderco warranty is shit. They put red lock tight on their knives for years so you couldn't take them apart and if you did it voided the warranty and no they will not replace a blade cheaper. You can bet your next paycheck on that. They can go fuck themselves.
