If you make a H2O2 mixture for future use, don’t put it in a clear container. There’s a reason it’s in an opaque brown bottle; it reacts with light to break down into H2O and O2. You’re spritzing expensive water instead of an inexpensive disinfectant.

Bleach is the same way. Once hit with sunlight or mixed into a spray bottle for cleaning it is only going to keep it's sanitizing properties for 24hours. This is not only because of the exposure to sunlight, once it comes in contact with any organic compounds. Which is why they always say to clean any surface before sanitizing with bleach. Bleach also has an extremely short shelf life even before opening the bottle which makes bleach quite unreliable. Hydrogen peroxide also has the same problems. It begins to decompose before even opening the bottle. It decomposes slowly into water and elemental oxygen when exposed to light, and even more rapidly in the presence of organic or reactive compounds. But you can test hydrogen peroxides effectiveness by putting a little on skin and seeing if any bubbling occurs. If it does then your in luck. This is a very good subject I'm happy someone else has brought it up. This is why I no longer use bleach. In many cases it has already become inactive before you get it home from the store the shelf life is extremely short.

I personally wouldn't recommend using this for sensitive plants like calathea and prayer plants.. I used a very diluted mixture for treatment for fungus and fungus gnats on a red prayer plant and a syngonium. The syngomium was totally fine and free of gnats, but the prayer plant later developed yellowing/browning on the edges of a few leaves, similar to fertilizer burn. I think my mixture was much more dilute than 1:1, more like 3:1 (water:peroxide) Has anyone else experienced this?

I did this to my orchid but I used 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water (watch orchid girl on KZitem) -- I bought the orchid on clearance with droopy leaves that just hung over the side of the pot. I removed all the decayed roots, soaked it in the solution for 24 hours and then drained it the next day. Within 2 days the plant is nice and perky again. The hydrogen peroxide neutralizes the soil so you will have to change out the soil because it will be sterile, but it also kills bugs eggs and stops root rot in its tracks. I treat all my Echeveria succulents with a hydrogen peroxide rinse straight from the box store so I don’t bring pests in my home and to stop any root rot going on. But with my Echeverias I saturate the soil in the pot and let it drain out right away. When it’s completely dry again, then I transplant it into new soil.

Additional tip for this great video: hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) rapidly breaks down into water (H2O) especially when exposed to light and when diluted. The disinfecting effect comes from the liberating of that oxygen, which leaves water. This so great in that it’s not toxic and leaves no toxic residue on surfaces, however, it also means that you must mix up these formulas right before using them, they don’t store for more than 24 hours, and I’d avoid using a clear glass container, too, as that contributes to rapid degradation. For direct treatment of soil, not plants, I’m a fan of more sparing use with a sprayer stuck into the original dark brown container.

@kathleenmurphy2379
4 жыл бұрын
@@lunacadence6050 it sounds your elephant ear plant is deficient in nitrogen and in magnesium. I would suggest you put a spoonful a teaspoonful of Epsom salts in a gallon of water that will help the leaves green up they need magnesium to make the chlorophyll which causes their leaves to be green. And a nitrogen deficiency is usually that yellow outline along the edges of a leaf. Also elephant ears be they alocasia or colocasia lose their oldest leaf as they're getting a new Leaf especially if they're deficient in nutrients. To make the new Leaf they take the nutrients out of the old leaf because they have to constantly grow. I have some videos on my channel from last summer wear I bought it up my elephant ears and my caladiums. I use a weak nutrient solution weekly on my orchids and then use the leftovers after the orchids soak on my other plants. The nutrient solution not only has some type of Miracle Grow with the first number the middle number the last number higher than the rest along with a Cal Mag solution called tell Magic... And in that I also have seaweed emulsion fertilizer some micronutrients Epsom salts and in the soil when I repot something I always put osmocote fertilizer and with it if I have worm castings that also goes in the soil.

@@ashley-annasledge9869 learn something from a man named Rick his KZitem channel is called Rick's orchids and he also raises African Violets. He got rid of his fungus gnats by having a fan move the air in the room. Unfortunately he has a type of Parkinson's disease that also has like an Alzheimer type component to his disease... So I doubt unfortunately and sadly he'll be posting again he's one Brave man. But he does talk about getting rid of them but takes about two weeks. The fan it doesn't have to be on high just a little bit of a breeze and said he had a string hanging from his shelf and you could see it move. The breeze keeps the gnats from flying and able to find a mate and lay eggs in your pot so you have to wait till all the eggs have hatched and your pots which takes about two weeks and then it's over. He has it in one of his older videos about African violets... He started raising African Violets and then started with orchids.. he's the person on KZitem that explain to me about how you figure out a nitrogen deficiency that halo around the edge of the leaf and magnesium deficiency is modeling all over the leaf the green isn't a solid green. He explains how all of those things work for a plant nitrogen potassium phosphorus calcium Etc.

@@HarliG Hi Harli! Unfortunately both plants have died :( But I don't think its my fault. Your tips and tricks were very helpful! I think it was the nursery where I bought the plants because got both the watermelon pep and the calocasia 1 month ago and from my small plant knowledge its really hard to kill a plant that quickly if you think about it that's only like 3 watering cycles. Additionally the watermelon pep and calocasia from my understanding are completely different plants and its fishy that they both developed rot about the same amount of time when all of my other plants are thriving. I'm calling the nursery and seeing if they have any sort of return policy even for store credit would be nice :) Thank you so much for your fun and interesting videos! Im such a fan!

Hi, I love watching your videos.👍🏾I have couple of questions; 1). How often can you treat your plants with hydrogen peroxide when they turn yellow & when the leaves are going dry? 2). What type of soil do you use & what do you all mix it with for your plants? Thanks.😃
@rxh2156

Maybe you should check for root rot if the leaves are always turning yellow.

all potting media (not actual soil) is sterile anyway. you get fungus gnats from outside when you use fine wood/bark based potting media, which tends to sour. i dont use any media like that now and have had no fungus gnats. so without improving your potting media, gnats return and you treat only symptoms of poorly draining medium with the peroxide. i use coir based media and sometimes a bit of perlite. bark media is ok for orchids but only nugget size with all fines flushed out.

I avoid fungus gnats by top watering and then spraying the soil with peppermint oil and rosemary oil. Turn on a fan and let it oscillate daily for at least 8 hours. Fungus gnats don’t like those smells or air blowing.

I used 1:1 ratio for watering, then my plant got really droopy and leaves turned really soft and tender. Some of the leaves turned black as well. Maybe 1:1 ratio was too strong? I hope it can recover from whatever damage I may have given. Is this normal ? 😭😭
@lonewanderer2894
4 жыл бұрын
'Normal' is not using it in the first place. Videos like this help with the affiliate commission, but a healthy , properly taken care of plant does NOT need H2o2. Ever. It is a bandaid at best. If you really need products to help fight root rot, etc. you can find better stuff.

Skyflower23 .....Please research God's Time/Calender in Genesis 1:14 before the FALSE Sabbath law is enforced. God's Sabbath is calculated by the lights in heaven, the sun, moon and stars. Man can change their calendars anytime. Satan deceives them that receive the mark of the beast. God's Time sits in the heaven where NO MAN can tamper with it. Do we think that God would command us to keep a seventh day Sabbath and NOT give us a time to calculate it? The FALSE sabbath is coming! Let us choose Him that made heaven, earth and sea.

So im pretty sure I have fungus gnats. They're driving us crazy. I did (before learni g of your video,) try this on 2 small plants and left them outside to sort of dry up the bugs for a day. I don't know if it was the peroxide ,the heat or what but they died 😞. Anyway though still have the gnats my question is: if I have recently watered the plants (within the past week) do I just go ahead and peroxide them or wait til that soil is totally dry?

Philip Plowman bottom watering your plants usually solves fungus gnat problems. They only like moist top soil and that’s where they lay eggs. Make sure to not overwater anything. :)

Hi Harli! Question: since you are "over watering" to saturate the soil with the medicine, should you then let the plant thoroughly dry before watering again?
@Jenfura9
4 жыл бұрын
I saturate my plants with water. every. time. I water them. That is not what “over watering” is. Over watering is when you water them too often.
@hazisimone

Ok. Thank you for your clarification. The question was more about the second part... should the plant thoroughly dry before watering again? Given the various types of plants I have, not all of mine favor being completely saturated.
