I don't know how the Benelli M4 works, but in the Remington 1100 the gun technically locks open after every single shot. It's the cartridge being kicked out of the magazine tube and hits the bolt release that causes the gun to close again (that's also why the bolt release is on the elevator). Assuming the M4 uses a similar system the combination of a light magazine spring and low mass cartridge may be what caused the issues.
@hehitmewiththatalphabetsou3337

Fundamentally that is exactly how the feed system is tripped on every single tube fed semi auto I can think of, and the M4 is no different except for the fact that the shell release mechanism is tripped by the hammer instead of the action

I have done two shotgun courses with my 1301, each was two day, each was probably 500 or so rounds. First course my 1301 was rock solid until one string at the end of the second day where I wasn’t sure what happened, just wouldn’t fire (maybe a few bad primers). I finished the day out fine. Second course I had a number of failures from early on which I eventually traced to a GG&G follower that was somehow binding in the tube (it was fine in the first course, not sure what happened over time). I swapped back to the factory follower after the course without cleaning it, to try and keep the comparison valid, and the same ammunition ran without issue. I did watch a number of people have failures in that second course with their 1301s. Some was crap ammo that didn’t always cycle. One person had the optic rail shear off of the receiver, which the instructor had seen before with other 1301s that were using heavier, Eotech like optics. One guy’s 1301 just gave up on him the second day and wouldn’t reliably go back into battery. We cleaned as best we could externally, but we never figured out the issue and he finished with a Mossberg 590. The people that had M4s didn’t really have mechanical issues. I don’t care for the bolt release, though there are aftermarket options. The biggest issues with the M4s was them not wanting to cycle many of the lower end birdshot loads people had bought. The 1301s seem far less picky in that regard.

@Murphy82nd
Жыл бұрын
@@mattwalters6834 generally speaking not using aftermarket parts tends to help with reliability. That said, there are a number of aftermarket parts out there for the 1301 that have been used for some time and have decent reputations at this point. When I purchased my 1301 the factory +2 extension was not available, so I went with the GG&G option and just the extension itself has been fine. I also used the GG&G stock adapted with a Magpul SGA stock for the 590 because it put my hand in a much better position to manipulate the safety. I also added a light rail attachment from GG&G so I could have a light. Lastly I have Velcro attachment to use the Esstac shotgun cards. Whether it’s a factory part or an aftermarket part, you always want to confirm function when you make a modification to a firearm. You try to gauge reputation as much as you can beforehand, but there are almost always exceptions to the rule. I have seen factory guns have issues as well (the gentleman whose 1301 stopped entirely was factory other than the optic he had added). Each person’s experience is a data point. Look at as many data points as you can and specifically look for common issues in those accounts.

I have had an elevator failure where the bolt locked to the rear mid mag with extremely light birdshot as well, but it’s a very rare malfunction from my experience and you need to shoot a lot of shells to get it. I had a Benelli M1 Super 90 that when new absolutely refused to cycle low brass ammo. Worked fine with full power buck so it was obviously a recoil issue. Looking inside it ended up that the hammer spring was getting dangerously close to coil bind when fully cocked and looked like it was actually binding when all the way back under the bolt in full travel. Clipped a coil and the gun became 100% with anything you shoved in the tube. Over the years I've seen half a dozen different 'problem' guns that just had springs a bit too long, or too thick so they bound up. I'm sure the manufacturers wanted the strong hammer strike for reliability...but when you cause another reliability problem by doing so you're much better off with the slightly lighter primer strike.

To me the beauty of the M4 is it's military style, "everything you need is on the gun," construction and durability. The bolt handle is the only tool you need for disassembly: From cleaning the gas pistons to removing the trigger group pin, it's all you need. So I kept the theme and did the minimum to mine. I got a 2 round aluminum extension instead of a 7 round tube because it makes field stripping the magazine tube easy and safe with no need to have snap-ring pliers which might launch the tube ring into the leaves at night in the woods. I also got a bolt release "tab" that's just a piece of spring steel that laps over the front stock retainer and covers the bolt release button: No need to drill a hole in the button, no fat button to break off and a bigger surface to boot. The good one's made by a guy in Canada. I got a front sling mount that's QR and has a picatinny light mount and lastly I got a Velcro "ammo card" mount for my receiver that you turned me onto in one of your videos. It's a close range weapon. It doesn't need anything else. I don't see a need for a red dot. If there's anything I need to hit at 100 yards, I'm using my Springfield M1A. Primary use for my M4 is a night-time intruder. When the SHTF it may be slung over my shoulder (NOT around my neck) while I'm using my M1A but likely will be my spotter's long gun. Again, it's for close range combat and up to 100 yards, those sights are quite adequate.

My benelli m4 couldn’t make it through 3 rounds completely stock. Bolt would stick to the rear. Took it all apart and found that it was hogged out with a broken or dull mill and it was WAY too tight. Just running the bolt back by hand would stick it in the back of the receiver. I used valve grinding compound and ran the bolt by hand about 400 times and now it will run anything. Completely reliable with any load. I definitely expected more for a $2000 gun, but now it’s my favorite shotgun.

The magazine spring is the same for 5 or 7 shot tubes. Benelli puts it in all of them no matter the tube length. Many people have had cycling issues with shooting bird shot in newer guns. When you get around 1500 or so rounds, that issue disappeared. Some with as little as 500 rounds. Mine took over 1000 rounds. Took it out today and shot Aguila #8 shot and it cycled them great. I think I was around 900 rounds when I had my last failure to cycle Winchester white box #8, but I continued shooting the rest of that day until I hit 1000 total rounds and it hasn’t happened since so I called it good at a 1000 rounds. I hear folks say Aguila is the worst but it has high brass and I’ve had great success with it shooting clays. But that was from my Benelli Ethos and that gun shoots everything I’ve ever tried. It has never had one failure to date and it has more thousands of rounds through it than I can remember. Even 7/8ths oz loads, it shot everyone of them. Realistically it has probably over 8 thousand rounds. That’s by me going by how many cases of target ammo I’ve bought. Just a guess. I quit counting after 5000 rounds. But I agree with you that the M4 is the softest shooting gun I’ve ever shot when it comes to 00 buck and slugs and mag loads. Next would be the Remington V3. Same gas system. But I have shot 500 rounds of target ammo shooting clays with the Ethos in one day too. Didn’t have a red spot on my shoulder not any soreness. It’s a dream gun too!

Almost certainly the malfunctions were cause by the magazine spring. The shell has to be "ejected" from the magazine onto the lifter with enough force to trip the bolt release and drop the bolt. The "default" function of the bolt is to lock open on every shot. The next shell jumping out of the magazine trips the bolt release. If it didn't have enough energy/velocity to do that, the mechanism doesn't "see" the round and "thinks" the gun is empty, and locks open as designed. As you lawyers would say "absent evidence of another shell..." It works with heavier loads because the heavier recoil, and faster reward inertia imparted on the shells from the heavier recoil, ejects them out of the magazine with enough force to trip the bolt release and function the mechanism properly. And you thought the recoil was only affecting your shoulder. With lighter loads it _usually_ works, but not always. Obviously, those loads are "borderline". Variations from shell to shell cause different recoil impulses, maybe to small for you to feel with your shoulder already pounded into hamburger. You lengthened the magazine tube, you need a longer spring. I question the wisdom of ANY modifications to _the gun_ if you are testing _the gun._ Test the gun straight from the box and THEN make any modifications. I think the "failures" in both tests of this great gun were caused by aftermarket modifications. I know you want a longer mag tube, I get it. But it isn't reasonable to assume that Benellni would simply install a longer magazine tube and _make no other changes_ to the gun. You may get away without changing the spring in a pump gun, but it's not advised in an autoloader. I think you need to change the spring and repeat the test. I'll wait here to watch.😜

I’ve had a similar failure to cycle with my M4 with bird shot as well. However, it cycles Federal Flite Control which is a super low fps round just fine. I have ran mossbergs myself. First one was mav 88, then had a 500 persuader, then last time you posted the broken turkish, I walked out. And left your video on pause and bought a mossberg 590m the full version. With the mags. Trying to get back into shotgun game after taking a long break. I had to go pump tho. Plus It cures the itch in between my 6.5 grendel AR build haha 😂 I will say tho, my brother got one of those citadel tactical 12g turkish shotguns. He likes it. But hardly runs it

Would be interesting to see the Benelli M2 now. Their inertia system vs their gas system.

@tfbtv Correct magazine springs are essential to making a semi auto run properly, having a spring with not enough spring pressure means that under recoil your shells' inertia is enough to compress the spring (once you're almost empty) taking pressure off the shell stop making the gun think the magazine tube is empty, thus locking the bolt to the rear. Put the correct spring in. I hope it makes sense to you now.

You guys should do a 500 round burn down on the Stoeger M3000! It's a Turkish shotgun, but seems well regarded. It's a bit outside the norm for a "Turkish shotgun" since Stoeger was purchased by Beneli some years ago.

I shoot the Benelli M4 Super 90 since 18 years which means around 50.000 shots fired. No failures, no O-rings, no double feed. Its the only shotgun i really trust: made me sell all Remington and Mossbergs and other semi auto-brands that had failures endlessly.

Is the Benelli M4 Shotgun good? Of course it is, but that doesn't mean everything else is junk. With proper maintenance even a budget shotgun will perform good. Case in point the Citadel Boss Hog, yeah I have one, and saw your video on it. Mine has been slightly modified, pistol grip stock, mag extension making it a 8+1 and a red dot. Properly cleaned, lubed, broken in and still working flawlessly after more than 2000 rounds through it without any issues. As a matter of fact, even my son, a Marine MOS 5811, now a reserve and full time SRT police officer was surprised how well it functions.

I had the same problem with the feeding, same deal, 7 shot tube but factory 5 round spring. Ordered a new spring and haven’t had that problem since. Even with light birdshot

Very interesting, nice review. I would ask for one more Turk shotgun review and that would be the Stoeger M3000. Most of the components of this semi auto are made in the same plant in Turkey that also makes some parts for Benelli and Beretta. I have one of course and so far ( admittedly shooting only a couple hundred shells ) have had no issues. This gun cost me 600.00 new so would like to see how it holds up under your demanding tests. Recoil operation and many features that make it worth looking at. Just my .2 cents.

Big fan from canada!!!!...i have all the respect in the world to my neighbors to the south. All i can say is enjoy what you guys/girls have down there. Trudeau is taking almost all of our guns...in a few months it will be illegal for me to own a benelli M4. Along with all semi center fire rifles.... I know things are drastically changing in your country too but canadians, Australians, most of Europe would go to jail for having the toys you have. Again...huge fan of the channel, i watch every episode 🇨🇦🇺🇲

Cost of $2000+, reliability ALMOST as good as a Maverick 88. Its a must-buy. (Hey, a little bird named Google told me the reliability record for a semi-auto shotgun is held by the boutique Eye-Tie gun maker of Reminton-aroni with their Eleventy-a-Hundred shotgun way back in the 1970s whilst decked out in a leisure suit and platform sole accessories.)

I've owned 4 different Benelli M4, 2 of the M1014 LE's and 2 Standard M4, out of the 4 I only had 1 that would run 100% with any thing you threw at it. 1 had issues with birdshot just like you did where it would lock up with a round on the elevator.. it had the factory benelli 7 round magazine spring, and it didn't make a difference. All ran flawless with buck and magnum loads... so if you're using it as intended for a combat shotgun running combat loads then it's awesome and is probably definitely the best choice. I believe shooting straight combat loads other guns would fail before the M4 would. There is definitely a cool factor to owning the Benelli, but I think for common use, the Mossberg 940, Beretta A300 and a few others are a better value. Just my personal experience and opinion though.

The m4 is an amazing shotgun. I’ve been thinking about getting one but several years ago I made the decision to get one of my favorite movie guns and went with the star shotgun from “Heat” and purchased a m3. I’ve wanted a convertible shotgun since I was a teenager in the 90s and the Spas 12 is fairly rare and for what I would use it for it would be better suited as a conversation piece. The m3 is my personal favorite shotgun ever made and it’s my go to weapon anytime I need a shotgun

I carried a 1014 for a while in the Marines back toward the end or 2003. I will vouch that it just wouldn't cycle sport loads or bird shot. It required full power buck and slugs.
