What's kinda silly about buying shotguns is you rarely get a chance to try them out. Some clubs (not all) have rentals but usually limited choices. Unless your buddy has a shotgun that he will let ya try it''s difficult to know if a gun fits you. It's easy to fall in love with a gun behind the counter at the store but if you buy it and can't hit anything with it you now own a 8 lb paperweight. I think your unbiased assessment of the guns you review is spot on and agree with you on most things. Keep the reviews coming!

As a Shotgun warranty gunsmith, I can state that the steel on the Benelli is better than the Beretta. As well, on the A400, the bolt carrier is welded on to the bolt and are known to break at the weld. Replacing it is around $400. Just a heads up.

I'm an English shooter. I own a Berretta Al391 and also the Benelli Supersport. The Supersport is the English version of the SBE3. Now reasons not to like the Beretta range! the loading port bends over time and causes cartridge jams all the time,I've have friends who've had the same problem with the A400's. Now in England we cannot get a new loading port and end up bending the port back with a screw driver. As to the recoil system. yes the Beretta has the recoil kick off system. Now stand at the side of someone shooting the Benelli and watch the chevrons in the stock compress when they shoot. Yup it has it's own recoil damping system. When I bought the Benelli I didn't clean it for 2 years, the Beretta was pretty much every 2 months. I'd never go back to a gas gun

I have the A400 and the SBE3, I haven't used the SBE3 in a couple of years. What did it for me was the non traditional firing positions form ground blinds for geese. The A400 never failed to cycle. where as the SBE3 would fail to cycle on a number of occasions. The kick off paired with the falcon strike recoil pad made the A400 a no brainer.

Holding/mounting the benelli even slightly wrong can induce malfunctions. I always say that yes, they don’t need cleaned often, but guess what? Neither do quality gas systems like the beretta. Looking filthy and actually needing cleaned to run are two entirely separate things.

I’ve been shooting the same SBE3 since 2017. I’ve killed multiple turkeys and hundreds of ducks and geese. I have not kept a round count but I’d imagine somewhere around 4000 shells total between target loads and waterfowl loads. It has jammed on me one time. And I believe it was because the charging handle hit my hand went shooting basically upside down from a layout blind. My best friend shoots an A400 and makes fun of my benelli. Both of us shoot our guns extremely well. I just prefer the slenderness and lighter weight of the SBE3. The A400 is just too chonky for me. And I’ve heard about bolts cracking and receivers bending. I really think for anyone it comes down to preference in how it feels in your hands… still don’t know how ergonomics goes to the A400 when it’s a pound heavier and feels like a “2x4” lol

I have and I think prefer the A400, it points so well, kicks so soft, and it cycles lighter target loads. One big thing I think you should test is how well the 12 gauge autoloaders cycle 1 ounce at 1180 shells and maybe even some super light target loads. That cuts more recoil from target shooting than almost any other feature. I think they are both great and I could totally recommend either shotgun depending on what/how you hunt.

Definitely a "ford vs. chevy" choice in my opinion. Both are good quality and reputable brands. Boils down to personal preference and feel in your hand. I will say with absolute confidence Benelli shotguns are the least reliable guns I have ever walked a wild pheasant field with. Been hunting in South Dakota for 26 seasons now and that fact has remained constant. Not hating on Benelli. They make a fine gun. They unfortunately become single shot malfunction machines in the pheasant field. They come out of battery while walking and give people that famous "benelli click". This is usually immediately followed by a litany of cuss words........ This includes the newest ones made as well.

Last year I was between the SBE3, Magnus II, and the A400 (all 12 gauge). I didn't get to shoot any of them prior to purchase, so I chose the SBE3 due to in hand feel and the BEST coating. I've shot the SBE3 on 5-6 trips now and love it. It wasn't an easy choice and I think I would have been just as happy with the other two. SBE3 BEST: love the durability (salty California areas), love how it shoots. Hate the black BEST color. Magnus II: American brand (kind of), loved the vintage tan camo, gas + Target Focused Life seemed to have this as #1 last year for the grouping A400: didn't like the camo patterns as much, bulkier in hand, However, I met a rep in Yuma for the dove opener last year, he almost had me purchasing on the spot.

I have both, and they are both great guns for two totally different reasons A400 for Turkeys 3 1/2" shells thru this gun are a dream compared to the SBE3, now duck and goose late season covered with ice and snow Benelli failed to bring up my second shot, during cold weather the second shots were slow to reload, SBE3 just keeps jamming the shells in there and never gave up. It's fun to carry the Browning Synergy in the field, and someone asks how I like it and only having two shots, I reply if I need more shots I can get my backup guns and when they find out what my backup guns are they shake their heads. Now if you want to carry a heavier gun all day grab the A400, all day carry goes to the SBE3, the first thing the SBE3 did was go swimming in the mud next to our blind, just picked it out and wiped it off and whaled away from then on, needless to say I was impressed. Maybe my tests are a little more rigorous than yours but that's real life. You're right about one thing both are great guns and if you have to choose buy both.

On the TFL shotgun finder under waterfowl guns and if you filter by overall score high to low. The A400 is listed 1st and the SBE3 is listed down in the 18th spot I have always been a fan of Benelli but after shooting an A400. That will be my next waterfowl gun. I do think you are paying $500-700 more than you should for each gun just because of their names.

I like the super Vinci but as a general public waterfowler I get very few to no opportunities with the dead sky. Never jams as long as you use the oils they give you.

I had a sbe 3 12g and m2 20g, sbe shot way high finish had worn bad and poa was horribly inconsistent and it jammed, not a lot but more then it should. I called benelli and cs told me to put a huge bead on it and said more or less your problem not ours. M2 was nice but took a hammer to load, very stiff. I sold both bought 12 and 20 a 400 and they are awesome. Benelli in my opinion is not a horrible gun just way to many issues for me, btw good video thank you

Coming from someone that has hunted with both , and shot skeet/sporting clays with both, the sbe3 wins it out for me. The recoil is not that much different from each gun(no matter how dramatic he makes it sound) with both waterfowl loads and target loads. Actually the sbe is lighter on the shoulder with target loads. The beretta loves to kick you in the cheek where the sbe does not. And the sbe choke is not as paper thin as the beretta. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the beretta but FOR ME it was not a good shooting gun. Sbe gets the edge in my book.

Been a Benelli guy all my life. Still shoot with my SBE and SBE2 guns and wanted to get something new. Logically SBE3 is the next choice however I have heard too many good things about the kick-off stock. However when holding it in store the gun felt heavier. Indeed it is heavier than the SBE3 but not by much. Believe it or not that little difference prevented me from buying it.

I’ve bought 3 SBE3s 28gauge 12gauge and a B.E.ST 12gauge. The only one that has cost me over 2k was my 12gauge SBE3 B.E.ST. Your regular SBE3 should run you $1.7k maybe $1.9k after taxes.

Keep em both, I have Benelli Vinci and nothing comes close. I've shot SBE 3 and Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus, (that is the gun my son shoots) the Vinci just handles different, I can feel it when I shoot them all in rotation. There is a physical difference I can feel in shooting it compared to the other 2. For reference I"m 6' and 220 lbs.

I have the SBE3, A400 XP, and Maxus 2. I think the best way to compare these two guns is to say the A400 is the best gas waterfowl semi and the SBE3 is the best Inertia Waterfowl semi. I shoot my A400 more because I need a longer LOP and I am a person who likes the weight, bulk of it. If you have a shorter LOP and prefer a slimmer gun you could easily prefer the SBE 3. I have found the A400 to be less picky on target loads. As an aside, Steve you need to clean your A400 as it is not locking back after the last shell. This is either due to a blocked gas port or the carrier is not properly lubricated.

Sba3 all day reason : shot one for years on ducks and turkeys for probably close to 12 years prior it was the M2 my ultimate favorite and my sons favorite for 5 years I wanted to like theA400 because it looks so cool and i had a awesome deal on one but couldn’t”t get used to the chunky feel

I chose the a400 for myself and a sbe3 20ga for my 11yo I can say they each have their strengths and weaknesses the a400is definitely the more reliable option in North Dakota temps and I haven’t missed anything yet on a hunt. But the 20ga sbe3 is a laser beam in my sons hands

Beretta A400 would be the one I would go for. Love gas operated 3.5 waterfowl guns. Inertia I find shoot very rough. A400 is thicker and operating system is easier to operate with thick gloves that you have to wear when you Waterfowl hunt in the Northeast.

A400 all day. But it does have one design flaw imo. The recoil spring tube into the receiver. Almost no threads and it’s plastic. You fall on that gun or lean on it hard where the stock and receiver meet and you end up with two pieces and a $200 repair.

I chose the A400 for less recoil. I do own Benelli uplands guns.

Good review. Both good guns. The placement of the safety would probably be a deal breaker for the beretta. Even though I’ve contemplated buying one a couple different times. I always seem to buy another Benelli because they just seem to pull up better for me. I think you should look at cleaning a bit closer. It’s a big part of owning a waterfowl shotgun. The Benelli is so easy and quick to clean and maintain compared to a gas gun imo.

The A400 is a better all around gun because of recoil. You can't shoot a SBE all day everyday. I have both & the SBE recoil starts hurting after about 100 rds shooting sporting

I have a Beretta A400. It has shot 7/8 reloads up to 3 inch duck loads. It has never jammed on me. I pull in a lot of sporting clays tournaments and I’ve seen Benellis jam with light loads. I think they are both fine guns but I also prefer the recoil signature of gas operated autos over recoil operated. That is a personal preference though. Another personal opinion - microsecond differences in how fast one shotgun shoots over another is an absolutely worthless metric to 99.9% of shotgun owners.

I have a lefty a400 extreme plus. I love it. Also have a 20 gauge m2 that is awesome. I was too worried about high patterns with the sbe3 and the beretta is completely left handed.
