The tester start on the right strip of paint (1) goes to the middle (1), then to the left (1), then back to the middle (2) then to the right (2), then back to the middle (3) then to the left (2), then to the middle (4), then back to the right (3), then back to the middle (5), then to left (3) One can easily see that the middle paint strip will be getting an extra pass every 2 passes. Not very fair a test practice.

I’ve used this paint 2 times in the last 20 years with excellent results and staying power. I just ordered more for an upstairs old wood floor. Very satisfied. One finish on old concrete. The other on heavily traveled basement stairs.

Hello! I work for a Benjamin Moore retail store and this video troubled me so I looked into the Floor & Patio product. On the back of the gallon it states.... "A quick-drying epoxy reinforced latex floor enamel with a low sheen finish that is durable and resistant to soaps, detergents, grease and oil. For interior and exterior use on unpainted concrete (new or old) and previously finished wood or concrete, such as basement, sun porch and breezeway floors. DO NOT APPLY TO BARE WOOD." It goes on to say it is self priming on concrete surfaces but consult a Benjamin Moore retailer about the appropriate Fresh Start primer for wood substrates. I know contractors who stand behind this product so after watching your video I wanted to look into it more. I hope this information helps. On a side note, if you would like a fantastic exterior wood paint that you do not need a primer with, I personally recommend Arborcoat Solid Stain. Happy painting!

This made me a little nervous - I just painted my lower staircase using BM Porch and Patio... thanks for reminding me that I followed the BM dealer's advice and used Fresh Start primer on the oak steps first. It turned out beautifully - and my contractor has been tromping up and down them from the garage to my main floor for renos to my kitchen and powder room without a single blemish to them. I have to do the other staircase yet - and I'll be using the same products for them.

@igorverdes doesn't need to be a floor primer. The primer is to help adhesion, the paint is the part taking the abuse.

I had a problem with the restore product that lifts off all the time. I scraped off the coating, filled in divots, prime with kilz primer and then will apply a porch paint like the BM product. I think the thick coatings like restore are simply too thick and are more sensitive to temperature change so they pull away easily after thermal expansion.

Dude the label on the product specifically states “do not use on bare wood” it is not intended to bind with bare wood. So read the labels and select the product that is right for the project!

Drats, I just bought some Benjamin Moore floor paint for the treads of an indoor staircase. There's already old paint on most of it but some of it is so worn away that the wood is bare. I guess this means I'm going to have to prime, something I was hoping to avoid. I wish I'd seen this video before I made the purchase.

Just have the primer tinted too - saves a lot of grief and knocks the colour into the stairs. I'm not connected with any paint dealer or manufacturer (I'm a civil servant). Have some faith in it - it will work out fine.

This video is flawed at best and a purposeful set-up for failure at worst. The test is flawed because of the lack of proper preparation. Also, any paint that has cured for 7 days will not just dissolve in water. The Ben Moore paint acted like it had not fully cured as it dissolved in the water with the scrubbing. A true failure would have shown the paint peeling of in sheets, or in pieces or in chunks, not dissolving. I am a painter by trade and have seen too many failures in paint. Even the cheapest of paint will peel rather than dissolve. This looks like a concerted effort to discredit a very good product.

People are complaining that you should prime the BM first as it states on the can ... while forgetting that the other 2 don't need a primer first and held up to all the scrubbing. Why wouldn't you still want to only use the Sherwin porch and floor?? It holds up that well without the extra prep ...

Hi, THERE ARE MANY ISSUES HERE: BARE WOOD VERSUS PRIMED WOOD VERSUS OLD OIL PAINTED WOOD HOUSES!!! BM porch paint is one of the only paints in Canada that has an alkyd binder so it NEEDS 30 days to completely harden and a BASE PRIMER FIRST!! Now if you are painting a historic home which has many or a few oil paint layers, use an oil primer first and then the BM porch paint. BECAUSE ACRYLIC PAINTS DONT STICK TO OLD PAINTED SURFACES THAT ARE OIL! I called Sherwin Williams and they dont put alkyd binders in their paint and cannot guarantee its adherence on an old OIL painted house!!!! High quality paints have higher solids and use good acrylic binders to adhere to bare wood but cheap hardware store paints use fillers and vinyls and water that peels right off!!! AND IN CANADA OUR STRICT VOC LAWS CHANGED ALL PAINT INGREDIENTS SOLD HERE. Many paints failed on exteriors peeling after 2014 laws. Nowadays a lot of exterior acrylic paints have water based urethane added to them. Its idiotic to cut out oil paint because we are pouring tons of acrylic paints into our water tables washing out our brushes and its peels into our soil contaminating our world when OIL IS NEVER POURED INTO DRINKING WATER AND HARDENS WITH NO VOC GASES AFTER 30 DAYS AND LASTS YEARS!!! So please CONSIDER ALL FACTORS BEFORE JUDGING A PAINT.

It seemed to me that the tester on this video spent a lot more time on the Benjamin Moore portion than the other brands', therefore, the test is inconsistent and unfair. (I'm not a Ben Moore employee and it's not my go to brand due to excesive cost.)

I've used BenMoore paint on my porch for years and have noticed a definite decline in quality. I'll have to use up my last $60 gallon this summer but I'll be switching to SW after this last re-coat. Fact of the matter is the BM porch paint lifts whether you prime the surface or leave it bare or previously painted......this video accurately depicts my recent experience with BM porch paint.

"exp"?? Meaning "except", "expressly", "especially" , Other?? Been painting for 48 yrs with about the last 20 or so using BM almost exclusively, but I've never used this particular product. About to use for first time on my own front porch decking as a test. Trying something new for the hell of it. ACQ decking dried in the sun flipping hourly to avoid cupping. Sanding when dried, thinned "CoverStain" primer 1st coat, followed with light sanding and full second coat primer. Decking installed tight with seams caulked with "Boatlife" marine caulking to be followed with BM porch and deck enamel. I know, I know. Long drawn out endevour but am semi-retired so, lots of time. Curious to see if this might actually work. Depends, I guess, whether I'm still here to witness. LOL. Would appreciate your experience with this product. Thanks.

Lots of funny comments below. Primer doesn't magically mix with paint to make it non water soluble.......a lot of posters here that can read instructions, but not use a bit of common sense. Primer will not stop a paint from melting with water.

The Floor & Patio paint came off because it did not bond to the wood. The water had nothing to do with the paint coming off. He could have scratched it with his finger and probably came off. A bonding primer is needed for a wood surface with this paint. Once the bonding primer has dried the Floor & Patio paint will have no problem boding to the primer.

This is a Major Fail. In my opinion Benjamin Moore should recall this paint for failure to meet even the most basic standards and requirements for exterior floor paint. We conducted this test based on a job site failure. The Benjamin Moore paint company was notified of the failure and was given all the required information in order to perform tests of the coating. We never received a response from Benjamin Moore as to the results. Our test was performed with the parameters as stated and the results were as seen on the video. We have no affiliation with Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, or PPG paints. This video is informational, we have no reason to "fake" or skew the results.

The test is not on bare wood. The plank in the video is pre-finished wood flooring, the poly finish was scuff sanded before the paint was applied.

The application instructions do not call for a primer except for bare wood. The test plank is pre-finished wood flooring, not bare wood. The application instructions for previously finished floors calls for cleaning and scuff sanding which was done prior to painting.

The test plank is pre-finished flooring. The major fail was on porches at a job site. The labeled application instructions of BM porch paint calls for cleaning and scuff sanding for previously finished surfaces, a primer is required for bare wood. Entirely removing poly is by no means standard practice prep.

I am no expert, I am however, a very happy consumer after buying my second Benjamin Moore paint, I painted badly pet stained old fir floors with this paint, tinted to my color specification. I'd like to chime in and say this floor and patio paint is enamel. I would not expect a enamel paint to work for the application on this video. The paint was easy to use and my old floor looks gorgeous. I think a oil based paint is what the other two paints are. So this is probably misrepresented. Oh, and I won't be scrubbing my floors with a harsh scrubber like this. I read the application card.

The problem that has been brought to light in this video, is not how it sticks to wood, but a bigger problem with BM. If the paint was built up in one inch thick blocks, the BM was dissolving from the top down like flower and water. Clearly a weak floor formula in this case.
