Here are 6 full minutes of dazzling Big Band Swing by the Benny Goodman Orchestra in a “live” performance from 16 September 1941. Being a “live” performance there weren’t any restrictions on the length, so BG and the band just kept improvising away at an intense level. One of the key reasons for the high energy is the dynamic and propulsive rhythms provided by drummer Big Sid Catlett. Big Sid was a difference maker in any band that he was a member; he truly was one of the greatest jazz drummers with his unique style. The Boogie Woogie based riff song is titled “Roll ‘Em” which was composed by pianist Mary Lou Williams and first recorded by Goodman for RCA Victor in 1937. In this extended rendition there are solos by pianist Mel Powell, Benny, trumpeter Jimmy Maxwell, tenor saxophonist Vido Musso and a final trumpet solo by Cootie Williams. Clearly the varied band riffs and supportive rhythm section inspired leader Goodman as he takes multiple solo choruses; surely BG is having a ball. Unfortunately, Big Sid’s employment with BG was only 4 months in duration but we are left with some outstanding commercial and “live” recordings that document this particular band. I find this recording to be exhilarating and I hope you will too.
Enjoy!
