I was lucky enough to meet Lionel Hampton backstage when he and his Big Band played Wiesbaden Kurhaus back in 1985. What a great musician, what a wonderful man.

its benny goodman's acting that turns this from a good scene to a great one. the uncertainty in his eyes, the way he keeps looking to other people for reassurance, just brilliant!

oh what memories. I saw this movie in NY as a kid, maybe 9 or 10. Right after the movie, the Goodman band could be heard, and the stage started to come up. Live shows back then after movies. And I jumped on stage to meet BG and shake hands.

I love this scene so much! I laugh at all Benny's lines, but when he says "you mean, to play jazz?!" with such real anxiety, I DIE! And the faces of all the other famous musicians in the room having a ball listening to the guys playing.....priceless!

This film is a remake of BALL OF FIRE (1941) Directed by Howard Hawks and starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. Billy Wilder's script is a takeoff on SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, A gangster's moll on the lam hides out with a group of staid, academic professors working on an encyclopedia. Gene Krupa and his Orchestra are featured in a long sequence with the band performing "Drum Boogie" (with Miss Stanwyck on vocals). Hawks was so enamored with that film that he remade it 7 years later as a musical with Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo in the leads. A big fan of popular music, Hawks expanded on the Krupa sequence by changing the professor's task to working on a musical encyclopedia and cast a whole boatload of jazz musicians to play themselves. His big inspiration was casting Goodman not as himself, but as one of the professors. While A SONG IS BORN is not as hilarious and charming as the original, the music alone makes it a must see.

The movie is called "A Song is Born". My absolute favorite scene is when all the greats get together and play an awesome version of "Flying Home". Unfortunately, the song is intercut with another scene and dialog, but it's still an amazing thing to hear that many legends playing together.

Mel was with Benny Goodman’s band before the War (WWII), was in Glenn Miller’s Army band during the War, then back with Goodman briefly after the War before he was dignosed with muscular dystrophy which ended his band career. From there he retooled and went the classical composing route which he kept up until retirement. I was always fascinated with his smooth playing style from this film.

@@rev.paull.vasquez4001 I havent watched this vid for some time and I think it represents what is really good about KZitem. Light entertainment at it's best. Political censorship being introduced is unfortunatly the other side of the coin. I mean reasoned arguments being suppressed. Goodman and Hampton were superb. I have heard some of Powell's classical music It is very very err very .. modern ! Mendellsohn for me !

He does but he's Wilson with a turbo. Powell had a lot more power and passion in his playing than Wilson did. Don't get me wrong, I really like them both but I think Powell has the upper hand. Same thing with the pair of French violinists, Stéphane Grappelli and Michel Warlop. Both were excellent but Warlop was clearly the power player.

Apparently Dorsey had become irritated by Goodman's continual lateness on set. Onw day he grabbed Goodman who retaliated by calling Dorsey a five letter name(?) and kicked him. Dorsey took a swing at Goodman and Armstrong broke it up. Benny left the soundstage and went home. He said he didn't fight back because "I'm no pugilist." Poor movie but great playing by all involved.
