From my collection of off-the-air recordings on VHS. Benny and a small group play "Hallelujah" on January 17, 1980 in Burbank, CA. According to D. Russell Connor's bio-discography of Benny Goodman, the personnel included: Lou Levy - piano, Mundell Lowe - guitar, Bob Dougherty - bass and Frank Capp - drums. Connor also states that two other tunes were performed; namely, Come Rain or Come Shine and Ridin' High. He goes on to say that Benny's performance "was an embarrassment that is best forgotten." (Perhaps it's best that I ran out of tape and didn't catch the other two tunes.) By the way, I have a copy of that book Carson held up at the beginning. It was published by William Morrow and Company, Inc. New York in 1979. I had a chance to meet Benny, not long after that book was published, after he played in a concert with the Allentown (PA) Symphony Orchestra. Two days before, I looked all over lower Manhattan in every book store I could find to buy that book so I could ask Benny to autograph it. Alas, none of the stores had the book. When I met Benny, I told him what happened; and, he expressed great displeasure with the publisher. So I asked him to sign my copy of Russ Connor's BG discography instead. (I should have taken BG's Carnegie Hall album with me.) In the middle of his signing, my pen began to run out of ink. Many years later I bought, on ebay, the book that I couldn't find in New York. It's mostly a book of pictures from Goodman's career. I posted two more BG TV appearances from the early 1980's at: • Benny Goodman on The M... and • Benny Goodman on The M...
