Khyentse Vision Project invited Benny Oyama to create a piece of music to go with our metered version of the famous Praise to Mañjuśrī. Watch as Benny sings us his acoustic composition.
Benny told us a little bit about his background and process:
"I have been writing songs for 18 years, and while most of my music touches on the subject of the divine in one way or another, this is the first time I’ve taken a spiritual text and adapted it to music.
For the Praise, I created a song that gallops - it feels like Mañjuśrī and his sword are charging in to cut down all of the worlds ignorance and obscurations. This creation flowed beautifully, a big part in thanks to the ease of working with the text.
I have already performed this one during a refuge ceremony and I can say that people are really connecting with this song and other adaptations of mantras in the context of Buddhism. I have been performing and traveling with Khenpo Samdup Rinpoche and have witnessed that music can and should play a bigger role in the spread of dharma worldwide."
