Thank you for making this video. My small screen is much more bent up, but the idea of making a jig and clamping it straight is excellent. Since the storm windows are an odd size, I'd have to get something custom made. I have a couple of vises and may use them, too.

This was very useful. I didn't make a jig, but it got me thinking. First I tried to use the guide on my miter saw, but when that didn't work, I just used a sheet of plywood without the cutout and I was in business.

I'm impressed with the simplicity of your solution! After seeing your idea I adapted it by placing a couple of wood shims on my bench, setting the screen on its edge on the shims, and then clamping between the screen frame and the bottom of the bench. It worked great. Thanks for posting your clever idea.

Your video comes at the right time for me. Two of the window frames and a sliding door in my rental property suffered the same problem. A handyman quoted $1,500 for a complete reconstruction. Obviously he is either not keen to do the repair, or have no idea how to fix a slight bend. Now with your jig, I will do it myself and save me the $1,500 minus the travel expenses. Thank you very much. Most appreciated.

Hope it works for you! Also, Your local glass shop should actually be able to make you a whole new screen for under $100. Or if it's a single bent rail that's too bent, typically they have rail material and you can replace a single rail and rescreen it.

Perfect repair. Do you have fix for if that bend is worse? I'm asking because one of my screen bars is broken however the screen and spline rope is still in the channel.
@timgoihl

A good local glass shop probably has replacement metal. I was at my local shop , Martin Glass(Madison,WI), a few weeks ago and noticed they had many different metal frame profiles available for purchase. The corners are typically not glued, they are just press-fit corner brackets that slip inside the frame tube. Re-screening is not too difficult - your local home store will have screen, different diameters of spline, and a spline roller. But first I'd ask for a quote at your glass store - you might be surprised that it doesn't cost too much to have them fix it.

How long do you leave the clamp on? After 2 days I see little improvement. I am straightening along the length and it is 62in
@timgoihl
2 жыл бұрын
It will happen instantly or it won't. A bend on the long side maybe much more difficult to fix. It also depends how bad the fracture is and whether the metal is willing to bend and hold it shape again
@b3arwithm3
2 жыл бұрын
@@timgoihl got it thanks. In my case, there is no fracture. I think it warped due being exposed to weather and what not. It is now 20 years old

Well if it's just a long gradual bend, it may just be screened improperly or the screen has shrunk and you just need to put a new screen in it?

@timgoihl

You can just set two small blocks or books on the edge of a table and have someone hold the screen vertically and then clamp to the table if that makes sense?
@chiccavaquita
2 жыл бұрын
@@timgoihl would the screen be on top of the books that are on the edge? Also, would a $5 clamp from Amazon work or what do you recommend? Thanks for replying!
@timgoihl
2 жыл бұрын
@@chiccavaquita yeah the screen would sit on top of the blocks. The purpose of my jig is just to give the edge of the screen a place to go into when you squeeze it with the clamp. I guess any clamp should work. But I guess it all depends on the clamp. You should be able to get a pretty cheap one at a local home store like Menards, home Depot Lowe's. You could probably even use it and return it....
@chiccavaquita

@@timgoihl I got it perfectly clear. You’re the best! You should make more videos, I think your channel will grow with unconventional ideas like this. I think this is the only one here that’s least potential to break. Every other single one would take out the screen, replace but keep the frame!
