In May Gemma and I took the Bergensbanen from Oslo to Bergen. We were really looking forward to this 7 hour train ride, through Norway's countryside. We read how beautiful it was and we were excited to finally be sitting, relaxing, watching the world go by.
Our train left Oslo at noon. We paid more for the Pluss car. It included hot drinks, but when we tried the hot chocolate, it was just hot milk. We improvised and melted some milk chocolate into the hot milk.
Around 2pm, we enjoyed our sandwiches we had bought at the train station. Then around 3:30pm, half way through our journey, we arrived in Al. But we didn't leave. They kept trying to leave, but they couldn't leave. After trying for about an hour, they decided to call buses to take us the rest of our journey.
By 6pm we were now on a cramped bus, with no food or water. Originally our train was to arrive in Bergen at 7pm, and we had planned on having dinner there. The bus made it's way up through the mountains, through snow and rain. As we started coming back down, we had to go through the tunnels in the mountains. Well it seems that almost every tunnel had construction work. This meant that we would arrive at a tunnel, then sit there for 5-15 minutes, while we waited for someone to escort us through the tunnel, adding even more time to our journey.
We arrived in Bergen at 11pm, nauseous and unimpressed. It was raining and everything was closed. We were one of the lucky ones to get a taxi.
This beautiful journey ended up being a sad part of our trip. I put in a complaint and at writing this I still haven't received compensation. I don't think a first class train ticket is the same as being cramped on a bus with no food or water for 5 hours.
It is a highlight to ones trip. Both sides of the train have equally beautiful scenery. I do recommend doing it, I just hope your experience is better than mine.
