I bought a 20” 6ARC Bartlein barrel from Compass Lake Engineering for my DMR AR15. The first load work up gave me a .750” load. The second load work up narrowed it down to consistent 0.600” groups. This ended up being 29.4gr CFE 223 with a relatively cheap Hornady 105 bthp. I can’t wait to try some of the ELDMs, Bergers, and Sierra MKs when components become available again. So far 6arc has been easy for me and I think the key is to spend money on a good barrel from the start.

Bingo, it is the Berger bullets that are jump sensitive not the cartridge. Every rifle is jump sensitive to some extent, as changes in jump effect barrel harmonics, but this cartridge isn’t any more susceptible to it than any other. Different bullets are, however, absolutely more jump sensitive than others.

I was able to get the harmonics sort out with a barrel tuner for my load and for my bullet. I do agree the 90k jump is too much and everyone is having what appears to be harmonic issues. I am not so sure that is the only issue with 6mm arc from an AR yet. With that being said… factory ammo 108gr has 31.5grb of whatever powder they use and shoots lights out from my 18” proof.
@EagleEyeShooting

Definitely a harmonic issue. 18 and 20 inch proof barrels are the few I've personally seen perform well. Unfortunately when dropping down past 22 barrel length, velocities are horrible to be suitable in 1K performance in moderate wind. 6.5 Grendel will perform about the same with 2650 FPS 6 ARCs. I do know theirs a difference in accuracy with barrels using a +1 rifle gas

My first thought when seeing the title was, what pressure is he running to get 2900fps? You cleared it up a quarter of the way through by saying you were exceeding the Hodgdon max AR load. Thank you for being clear! I assume, having built 300 rifles, you know how much pressure your bolt and barrel can take. I also figure that a cartridge with straightened walls like the 6mm ARC can take more pressure than one with tapered walls like the 5.56 (or 7.62x39 at the extreme). Good video, thanks for sharing!

In hunting, competition, or combat you're 100% correct that the shooter is responsible for every pill that leaves the muzzle of a firearm. It was stumbled upon by accident. I've started with 30 inch barrel Ive made for the X-Ring in a bolt gun. Found not much of an advantage going that route. Since then, I've built 172 rifles in this caliber and had request for all sorts of lengths. Each rifle I've manufactured gets tested, through my expirence 26.5, 22 and 18 are where the barrel lengths produced the best accuracy with both factory ammo and handloads. Subsequently, this decided the barrel length for the AR15 to be 26.5 to maximize velocity. That barrel in this AR15 if you watched how I built that barrel is X-Rings off a Big Horn TL3 build we've rebarreled to 6mm Creedmoor. I've seen at work that buffer/spring/BCG weight plays a bigger part in accuracy for ARs than most people aware of. Also, if you're using JP Bolts/BCG, I'd recommend changing the gas rings if you haven't already. Their design makes it difficult to tune the rifle reliably as you get a constantly varying pressure in the BCG.

The 6ARC in the AR15 is extremely finicky to get accurate. Proof barrels in 18 and 20" are known to work but will lack velocity to justify the cartridge performance better than 6.5 Grendel. Toolbox barrels as well as a custom Non SAAMI chamber I make and sell at DPGUNWORKS.COM are proven to work. Please allow me to test myself.... Beings this projectile is moving at 2900f/s, doesn't that mean, the barrel will not get wrecked or to say, burned out... or at least, will likely be able to rip 5,000 to 10,000 rounds through it, before a measurable notice of throat wear? If this was 3000 to 3100 f/s on up, that is the charge level that would mechanically start to cause the stress and heat erosion on the throat or lands of the rifling, resulting in barrel life much less? Anybody can inform me of my understanding or misunderstanding. If I think I understand correctly, if the accuracy is on point at 2900f/s, and not gonna wreck the barrel, then why bother charging higher, correct? Either way, another neat video. I enjoy the videos that stimulate the noodle called a brain to rationalize what I am learning.. Good stuff.
@EagleEyeShooting
3 жыл бұрын
Lol always enjoy your comments. I actually have 5K+ rounds down the barrel of my 6 ARC. That rifle pushes these bullets at 2945 FPS. It's not necessarily speed that burns barrels out, it's the heat. Though higher speeds correlate hotter temps, it's the type of powder used and how it burns. As an analogy 91 octane vs 87, 91 burns longer. Powders like H4350 hold its peak pressure longer which results in burning out the throat s. Thats why you see cartridges like the 6mm CM or 243 not last in barrel life. The 6 ARC is an anomaly because it efficiently burns the powder. Leverevolution builds pressure as it burns down the first 8 inches. The 220 russian base case allows for efficient burn without gas cutting the throat. Simply put it. Shoot 15 rounds down pipe consecutively, if you cannot grab the barrel and hold it. That'll tell you its barrel life. 30 rounds down pipe in the 6 ARC im still able to hold the barrel

Statement like this that you have just stated, lets me know how much I do not know yet about the craft of loading, and gets me super excited to keep reading articles, and the books. My neighbor printed out a powder list/chart, that shows most brands of gun powder, from slow to faster burning rate, which also translates to pistol to rifle cartridge, in most common re/loading theory. Dang this stuff is exciting. So unless you are hunting a wheat field you rarely have unobstructed shots past 150yds unless they step out in a bare patch for a second or two. This is why I'm very interested in the 6arc in a bolt gun. Its a faster 6ppc with factory ammo. A 300yd tack driver that my kids can shoot and not get gun shy with awesome barrel life for me.

As a "hunter" you will subjected to various positional shooting.. I highly recommend to test yourself in the Kraft challenge. Let me know if your still a 1/2 MOA shooter😉

@@EagleEyeShooting I have 2 positions that I shoot from when hunting.....sitting and standing and both off a tripod. Bipods are useless out here.. I'm not trying to be a 1/2 moa shooter every time I settle down behind my rifle. You asked in the video what our definition of "accurate" was and I said 1moa is accurate and 1/2moa was precision. I have a 220 swift that makes bug holes at 200yds, 10 shots touching a quarter....but its a barrel burner and horrible in the wind. An AR shooting under 1moa like yours is doing is a very very accurate AR in my experience.

Respectfully, I'm not arguing or disagreeing your answer. Here to enlighten to those who are willing to learn. I've too said the same answer.
